For a comprehensive review of the new Zeiss Milvus 50mm lens, stay tuned. I've always had an addiction to finding the perfect 50mm lens. Most people find the 50mm focal length boring, but not me. You could say it's my favorite actually. At one point I looked in my camera bag and realized I had seven 50mm lenses. I've owned all the AF Nikon 50mm lenses as well as several Ai-S lenses but this Zeiss is on another level.
Thanks for watching!

Like Melody Chest (below) I can also declare that my search for the right fast fifty is over... But your review helped me immensely to make up my mind. My adventure with photography and lenses started in the seventies, when I was still a student. My first camera was an Asahi Pentax ESII with a SMC Takumar 50mm f1.4 lens. How I loved that lens! I knew it was kind of soft, wide open; but its positive attributes far outweighed that shortcoming. I still have that lens and I use it on my NIkon D850. But unless I go mirrorless, I cannot focus it up to infinity. I still long for a fast fifty- for everyday use. I still love the magic of a buttery smooth focusing ring; like the old Takumars. I spent hours on RU-vid, looking at different options by Zeiss and Voigtlander. But your review finally gave me the answer. Thanks again!

Oh man! Not many videos on this lens on here and yours takes the cake! Lovely review and I was blown away with the picture quality that you so brilliantly displayed. I fell back on my chair repeatedly with the F word!! I really respect Dustin Abbott on here as well and he had great words for the Milvus too. I think my hunt for the greatest 50 around a $1000 is over. Looks like a no brainer to me except the manual focus deal which could be a bummer for moving subjects but one has to get better at that I suppose! The contrast, colour rendition, sharpness, bokeh etc are simply the best it seems! Thanks for a great video!

That was a pleasant educational experience. Great comparison. I've been shooting a Nikon 55 ai-s for years and about to get the Zeiss. This video helped me make that choice. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Absolutely loved this review.AT LAST a proper real world demonstration of what the lens can do as opposed to gawping at a monitor showing Lightroom tools on the side etc. Gave me all the info I needed without sounding like AI and was notably profanity free. Thanks so much_ 10/10..

Good to see a new vid from you Clint. That lens really does perform great. I'm definitely going to go for a couple of Zeiss Batis lenses for my A7II eventually, once I sell off my A-mount lenses. I'm a total Zeiss zealot. Zeiss FTW!

All the systems I've shot seriously with have mounted Zeiss lenses: Leica (M), Contax, Sony, Hasselblad. I think Zeiss has nailed the price/performance balance (unlike Leica, IMO).

Aren't those colors on the Milvus much warmer? Looked as if you applied a filter on the image.
@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy
@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy 8 лет назад
+Andreev Andrei I don't think they're warmer, just saturated and not flaring. No filters. The late day sun pictures should be warm. The camera was on Auto white balance, but when switched to daylight white balance it looked the same.

+Andreev Andrei Since the camera was on Auto white balance though, it may have chose a slightly different balance based on what the lens was giving it.

Some gear gurus worship older Nikon lenes to make themselves look knowledgeable, problem Is photos don't lie and this Zeiss Milvus line is kicking butt. One of these self proclaimed experts claims older planar lenses are sharper than Milvus... obviously delusional; which is why I unsubscribed from that channel and subscribed to this one. Great review!

Thanks! Yea, they just don't seem to realize that optics has moved leaps and bounds since the advent of computer modeling, even more so now that the competition has picked up and consumers are getting more demanding. These Zeiss lenses are great.

For the masking tape ball long ago, how many rolls does it take to make a little bit smaller than a baseball sized ball or a baseball sized ball?
@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy
@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy 8 лет назад
+RedPiratePanda Lol. Hmm. It would depend on the thickness and width of the tape I'd guess. I'd guess 5-6 rolls.

WoW, what more can I say. This 50mm makes me almost want to go back to Canon dslr. Do you think Loxia´s(21/35/50) will be near as good as this Milvus?
@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy
@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy 8 лет назад
+Roham Rasai I haven't compared personally but I know they're very good. If I had mirror-less I'd probably want the two Batis lenses and the 35mm or 50mm Loxia to complete the focal ranges. All great lenses.

I am undecided between the Milvus 50mm or the Sigma Art 50mm :(
@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy
@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy 8 лет назад
+Ademir Batista It's a tough decision for sure. I think the image rendering, color, distortion and bokeh are best on the milvus, but ultimate sharpness and price are best on the Sigma Art. Then there's the cost, weight and manual focus difference. Honestly I'd want the Milvus myself, but when Sigma runs a rebate, it gets more enticing. I actually enjoy manual focusing this lens. For video use, it would have to be the Milvus, the Sigma has such a short throw.
@Ademirb123
@Ademirb123 8 лет назад
+Photo314159 I love Carl Zeiss lenses on my Hasselblads back in the day. Well, I rented the milvus 50mm and sigma 50mm before buying the sigma art. The weather seal on the Milvus is a plus but its very very hard to focus on moving subjects. The sigma art on the other hand is easier to focus even in manual. The auto focus on the sigma is fast and can be customized via usb :) B&H was giving $100.00 off on May 10 - 16 and I got me a Sigma :) Thank you for the video! Very very good informations

I would like to see a comparison with Sigma 50mm Art the rumors says the siggy is sharper. cheaper .smaller and lighter on DXO the sigma Art is verey close to Otus 55mm from zeiss
@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy
@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy 8 лет назад
+ted tedsen I'd like to see that comparison too. But, while it is cheaper and slightly lighter, it won't beat the bokeh and contrast characteristic of this lens, it's resistance to flare, or color rendering. This lens is so sharp also and so precise, I can't imagine sharper.... and I own the Sigma 35mm Art (Love it), this Milvus is at least in that league or better sharpness-wise. WIth the floating elements it's sharp at both near and far focusing distances. It really comes down to weather you want AF or an amazing build quality IMO. After using this lens I didn't even care about AF, it is so well made. The Otus is the next level of CA performance.

WTF? you have to spend 1.5K$ for a lens zeiss and you'll have big chromatic aberration? there's no make sense, man....before to seen this movie, I've planned a big investment to those lenses Milvus...and....shit, I've understand...Leica apochromatic or nothing...
@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy
@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy 8 лет назад
+Francesco Marullo Did you even watch the video? It's about the lowest in CA that I've ever tested.
@drivetheone
@drivetheone 8 лет назад
Maybe we're confusing about purple fringing and green fringing, did you even watch this video, that you've made? ahaha :) peace and love man! Isn't same about CA and purple but it make me problems. Look at the 7:03 and 17:43. See example on this photo,made with Zeiss Milvus 2/35 and look at the foliage at the top and left corner. 3zgehi1uaxi23dphbrgqa50r6z.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Chris-Gampat-The-Phoblographer-Zeiss-35mm-f2-Milvus-lens-review-photos-7-of-16ISO-1001-125-sec-at-f-4.5.jpg If this lens make you happy, I'm so happy for this. Maybe I've to buy Otus lenses for me.
@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy
@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy 8 лет назад
+Francesco Marullo I think you mean LOCA or secondary longitudinal chromatic aberration, specifically referring to foreground and background out of focus elements. That's not regular CA. There is some in the 35mm image you posted though, but that lens is REALLY good at all the other aspects of image rendering. I had the camera on Vivid mode, so the effects are exaggerated here, but in the critical plane of focus, I couldn't find any. There is no perfect lens, every lens is a trade-off. Zeiss doesn't call the Milvus line APO even though it is better corrected than most lenses. The Otus is, but even then there are trade offs to get it. An Otus would be still be less expensive than a Leica APO lens. You've got to stop looking at back-lit tree branches man! lol.
