I don't know if I have ever said so before, you are not only one of my favorite reviewer's, but also I find your photographs very beautiful and inspirational as well. This video along with your 85mm Otus review have challenged me to review my own priorities towards lenses, price vs. quality to redefine my own photographic goals.

Great review Dustin. As an owner of both Otus lenses I have to agree with you on all points mentioned especially the investment purpose. I work with some of the best printers in the industry and when they see images taken with these lenses they are taken aback at the noticeable difference. Keep up the excellent work!

Wow... you really struck a blow to Sigma by stating that the Otus was more deserving of the word Art; but as a photographer who owns a Art series lens, think I have to agree... rendering, contrast and putting a capital R in Resolution isn't just exceptional, it is without equal. I had the pleasure of handling both the 85mm and 55mm Otus at my local dealer, and I have to concur that the focusing smoothness and movement of the focusing ring has to be tried first hand. It is beyond words, rather a pleasant and satisfying experience.

Good review on the Zieiss Otus 55mm F1.4 lens and nice to your cat Max in the video. For me I find that i could not see buying it because of the price but would rent it for any work that came. I would still use the canon 50mm f1.4 since it is small and light.

Is the Otus 55mm f1.4 still the best 50mm lens on the market? I heard about Sony 50mm f1.2 GM but I'm not sure if that is because in camera tweaks from Sony bodies made it look better than it really is?

I'm not sure it is the best any longer. I haven't tested it on a higher resolution body. The Otus lenses certainly have a special look to them, but they aren't the massive winners they once were.

Brilliant review, and brilliant lens. May I ask how does the EGS help manual focus? I have been shooting lots of manual lens with my canon body, and I can just use live view to focus.....
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 лет назад
EG-S shows true depth of field, which means you can actually visually see things come into focus. It's a much more enjoyable shooting experience, IMO.
@carbon6372
@carbon6372 5 лет назад
I’m considering getting this lens and a Canon 5DS R, but I’m a bit afraid to manual focus with such a lens on a DSLR. Even though it would be better using it on a Sony camera body, I prefer a lot of the Canon glass and the Zeiss glass for Canon. Not sure how to make the decision. Maybe I could switch to Canon’s future high resolution mirrorless later on, which might be just as good as the Sony camera bodys to manual focus. I would then also be able to use my Canon glass properly.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 5 лет назад
A high resolution mirrorless body would definitely be the best way to take advantage of this Otus lens.
@carbon6372
@carbon6372 5 лет назад
Dustin Abbott Yeah, that’s true. Which functions do you use on your Sony A7R III when using manual focus? I’m pretty new to Sony, and it would be fantastic to take advantage of some of the aids for manual focus. I’m also considering something like the Laowa 12mm and Carl Zeiss Apo-Sonnar 135mm, so I need to get used to manual focus.

@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 9 лет назад
ali tiger That's a good question. I'd actually probably split the difference and go with the Otus 85. All three lenses are amazing, so it really comes down to your focal length preference. I actually really like the 135mm focal length, but it can a little long in certain situations.

Can you please rate the optical (no other) qualitiy of the Milvus 50 1.4 and the Voigtlander 58 NOKTON 1.4 against the Otus whilst the Otus is rated to 100?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 лет назад
I haven't used the Voigtlander, so can't comment on it. If the Otus is 100, I would say the Milvus is at least a 90. It doesn't have quite the ultimate sharpness, but has a lot of sharpness and really beautiful rendering. It's rendering is easily my favorite among 50mm lenses outside of the Otus.

Hello, sir. I have a little bit of a weird question. Quite recently I had the chance to play around for an hour with an Otus 55 for the Nikon at a photo gear event where I could use any camera or lens, and naturally, I wanted to test the Best. However, due to my utter unfamiliarity and incompetence with the Nikon system and being unable to learn how to operate the Nikon D850 in 5 minutes, I just asked the people at the store to supply me with an adapter, and I ended up adapting the lens on my Sony a7III. The results of the portraits I took with it were simply stellar, but however, I noticed a lot of fringing in bright areas against dark ones, as well of quite the normal for lesser lenses sharpness falloff towards the edges. My inquiries are the following: 1. Have you had the chance to adapt these magnificent pieces of glass to a mirrorless camera like the a7RIII? 2. If not, do you think it's possible that the defects I saw were caused by the fact that the lens was adapted and not used on a camera with the mount it was made for? Decentralization, etc.?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 5 лет назад
The problem with the Nikon F mount is that it isn't a particularly friendly one to adapt. Canon EF lenses adapt much better. I would say that the defects you saw had to be related to adapting, as the Otus has very little fringing and is sharp from edge to edge.
@borisalmishev5052
@borisalmishev5052 5 лет назад
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you, when I get the chance, I'll try adapting the Canon version.
@CameraMystique
@CameraMystique 5 лет назад
Generally speaking I would not try to adopt high performance lenses on bodies with sensors for which the lens was not designed. Micro-lens construction (as they behave against color spill-over) and sensor glass thickness play a major role. In my tests the Otus 55 produced the least fringing of all 3rd party lenses. Now, NATIVE Nikon/Canon/Sony lenses have those things (CA and fringing) corrected in the camera's firmware.
@borisalmishev5052
@borisalmishev5052 5 лет назад
@@CameraMystique Without extreme high contrast scenes where CA usually happens, the Otus did what an Otus is supposed to, even adapted. Unbelievably sharp where it has to, wonderful colors and the feel of something special.

Another excellent review, many thanks Dustin.👍 I have a question about the eg-s focus screen if you can help. I have read that they are only suitable for "fast glass" but can they still be used on lenses such as the Canon TS-E 24mm /f3.5 and the Sigma 24-105mm /f4? I've read differing accounts where some say that this group of lenses are too dark and others that say they are fine. Do you have any experience of these (or similar) lenses when used in conjunction the Super Precision focus screen? Many thanks once again. 🍀👍
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 8 лет назад
I keep one of my bodies set up with an EG-S all the time, and it doesn't interfere with using any lens operation. The only real downside is that it always shows the amount of light the aperture lets in in the viewfinder, meaning that the viewfinder can be dimmer than the standard one with slower glass. In real world usage I often don't really think about it.
@andykeeble1
@andykeeble1 8 лет назад
+Dustin Abbott many thanks for getting back to me so quickly, I really appreciate it. I will swap the focus screen and see how I get on. At the end of the day it's no biggie to change back if I don't get on with it.🍀👍

Dustin Abbott well that's done and my 15mm and 21mm Zeiss Distagon lenses are so much easier to focus accurately. I've tried my TS-E 24mm mk2 and that's fine as is the Sigma. The EG-S focus screen is a big improvement for fast, manual lenses when compared to the "standard" screen. Thanks for your input on this Dustin.🍀👍

Actually an Otus on a 6D with an EG-S focus screen is one of the better DSLR experiences for a MF lens.
@AminTheMystic

Using 6D to test the power of Otus is a bit useless! You want something like d810 or the new 50mp Canon's. Or the Sony 7Rs
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 9 лет назад
+AminTheMystic That's not really true. Yes, you can expose more of its resolution, but the color rendition, contrast, and sharpness are very apparent with more mortal resolutions.
@AminTheMystic
@AminTheMystic 9 лет назад
Dustin Abbott But the reason they made the Otus range was for higher res cameras. If you have 6D then the Otus range does seem to be an overkill.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 9 лет назад
AminTheMystic I wouldn't say that. For one thing, the 6D allows for interchangeable focus screens and works better with manual focus lenses than most Canon bodies. It also has Canon's best sensor outside of the 5Ds/r line and the 1DX. Finally, none of the camera bodies you mentioned existed when this lens was released. Those sensors can take better advantage of the resolution, yes, but to say that the lens is wasted on a 6D is far from the truth.
@AminTheMystic
@AminTheMystic 9 лет назад
Dustin Abbott I do not mean to offend you in anyway. But with a 6D the balance between the lens and body is off. Why spend so much on lens with that body? The Planar T* 1,4/85 for around £1000 is much more suitable. - - The d800 was out. Which means so was Sony. Canon had been prototyping a high MP camera for a while. Obviously Zeiss as industry insiders knew more. The whole purpose of the Otus range is to get the best from a high mp camera. If you are not looking for that kind of detail... then why would you even bother to match and Otus with 6D? I think that is a fair question to ask.

For this specific lens, probably Nikon, because Nikon cameras normally have higher resolution, when it comes to normal lenses that can only achieve the sharpness of lets say 20 MP, then putting those normal lenses on both 22.3 MP 5d mark iii and 36.3 MP d810 won't necessarily make any difference. But this Zeiss lens probably has way higher resolution than 20 MP. Then, definitely Nikon can make more use out of the sharpness of this lens.
