Great video as always! I feel like I have to defend that Four Swords has more than a couple of hours of content though. On your first playthrough of the game, you're rewarded with Silver Keys for collecting 1000 Rupees in each main level which unlocks a first version of Vaati's Palace. What might not have been apparent to you is that you can then replay them with a 3000 Rupee target to collect Golden Keys. Finally, if you complete the game a third time while obtaining 5000 Rupees in each level, you can use the Hero's Keys to unlock a final gauntlet version of the last Dungeon which remixes all the other level themes and all four bosses. This is the intended way to collect 10 Medals of Courage and allows you to experience a lot more of the game's semi-random Dungeon layouts.

I played through 4 Swords Anniversary Edition a few times on my DSI and on my 3DS when it rereleased. I looooooved that game. Short but fun, especially for free! Also fun fact, it was my first Zelda game! Weird right? One that barely anybody played was my first Zelda and now here I am having played the vast majority of the titles.

Tri Force Heroes also had open servers, and connecting to those, you'd end up playing a lot of the same content over and over again. I enjoyed it far more in the little dedicated group I was a part of, but it was tricky to schedule, and we never finished it. I haven't totally given up on it, though.

I was once commissioned to make a Wii app that takes an ALTTP savefile, edits it so you've beat the 4 Swords portion of the game, so you have access to the Palace of the Four Sword/riddle sidequest. The idea is you take your GBA with the cart, plug it into the Wii, dump the save, update it, and restore it to the cart. Admittedly, you can do the same with a PC, but it's less fun that way!

in high school, a couple pals of mine had our Link Cables, and we rushed through Four Swords over a lazy Saturday ❤ it was great! and the Riddle Quest it unlocks was fun, and the Palace of the Four Sword vexed me for WEEKS.

Between the E-Reader, other hardware peripherals the GBA supported, and games like this where you needed not only multiple GBAs, but multiple of the same title, there was so much I never got to experience from the library and so many mysteries in those carts growing up. The most I ever really did with GBA connectivity outside of basic link support for Pokemon battles and such was using the (admittedly very cool) GC link support, but that was very limited in scope outside of Pokemon Colosseum and XD, Tingle Tuner and Wario Ware demo be damned. That bonus dungeon actually seemed pretty cool, but the price of admission for the lumberjack quest does not. 1 medal should've gave you access to the full riddle quest and reward, since on average it would mean each player only needed to beat the Four Swords once (then again why even have the medals interact with it at all at that point, just treat it like the dungeon).

Just do what I did. Beat Four Swords until you (and/or your friends, if they care) get 10 medals before even playing ALttP, and then copy that file to your other files. Now all the work is done to always have that extra ALttP content for future replays. Just make sure to leave one of those files unplayed (in ALttP) so you can recopy it whenever you run out of room. I keep a save state of all 3 copied files, just incase I screw up someday lol It takes some work but it’s worth it so you don’t have to keep replaying Four Swords every playthrough for the extra ALttP stuff…since it’s unfortunately based on each file individually. Now you have access to the new side quest, new sword technique, statues for your house and that entire extra dungeon + secret ending for all future replays. That plus a multiplayer mode, it’s like ALttP Definitive Edition lol And if you use one of the files and beat/play through ALttP after that, you can transfer the Master Sword sword beam + special spin attack/technique to Four Swords on that file, so you can use that file to replay Four Swords with its extra techniques if you want. You can replay all the levels as much as you want, so it’s the best of both worlds/games/modes. Again, just make sure to manage the files correctly. Can’t rename yourself, sadly. But a small price to pay, and I just named it Link. Or whatever you want.

I grabbed the dsiware version when it was free all that time ago; still have it installed too. I feel it may have influenced triforce heroes in the sense, you got three other dummies you can use in place of other humans if you got nobody to play with, which in hindsight, shoulda been available to make use of in the original

You only get the green and red actually, as game is two to 4 players, the DSi version let you play alone with the minimum number of Links possible.

I can't believe you forgot to mention the Like Like enemies (not to be confused with Pikit, the enemy that has a tongue) and the shield shop in the Dark World. The Like Like enemies that were exclusive to GBA ALTTP were able to steal your Mirror Shield and you had to go to the new shield shop found in the Dark World to rebuy it.

Back when I was in high school in 2002, me and a neighbor who went to my school who I was also good friends with at the time (he was in the year after me) both had the GBA ALTTP+Four Swords release, and knowing that we were in the same computer club at the time we pooled together money to buy a 4-way third-party GBA link cable from GameStop so that we could eventually complete the multiplayer portions of the thing and be prepared in case there were others who actually had GBAs and the game and wanted to play (there were and we did). I eventually bought out his half by the time I graduated from that high school and kept the cable.

The GBA versions of a lot of the SNES games (Zelda LTTP, Mario World and the All Stars remakes, Final Fantasy) were the definitive editions gameplay wise. It really makes me want to see a modern remake of them, that combines all the best aspects of both versions into one definitive package, with modern QoL. Imagine, for example, an ultimate edition of A Link to the Past, with all the quality of life and additional content from the GBA version, but with HD screen resolution and higher resolution sprites ^u^

Four swords adventures is pretty neat! While it is short to beat the final boss, each area has multiple versions and difficulties. So if you go back after completing vaati, you can tackle a harder version of that area, and unlock a more complete, co-op experience.

I played the Palace of the Four Sword back in the day by breaking in using glitches. I wasn't able to get the Hurricane Spin Attack, though.

I was never really able to experience Four Swords or the riddle quest, but at least glitches let me get inside the Palace of the Four Sword so I could play through that!

There’s a glitch that allows you to enter the Palace of the Four Sword without playing Four Swords. It involves using the mirror while leaping off a ledge in Thieves Town. I had the opportunity to play Four Swords with someone else in GBA, so I unlocked it legitimately. I also have the great spin attack. I also have a second save file with just the main game beaten so I can use the Thieves Town glitch to fight the four initial bosses of the Palace of the Four Sword and then load my original save file to fight the four links. It’s very interesting when you see the item usage of your original save file. I used over 200 fairies, killed around 6,700 monsters, used the Pegasus boots over 2,000 times and maxed out the sword count at 9,999. One of the hardest challenges in Zelda is the Hero’s Trial in Four Swords Anniversary in single player. Virtually impossible. The Realm of Memories is nice though.

This was my first Zelda game on GBA. I think I did actually have one friend who I was able to play through Four Swords together with, but never got the Great Spin attack. But I was able to have access to the new dungeon which was pretty cool to play through! I’m glad that with NSO, I’m able to play through Four Swords more with friends and that I’ll finally be able to get the Great Spin attack (eventually at least)

The fact that this was re-released on nso brings back alot of memoroes. The main one of four swords I jave is that I played through it by myself. I borrowed a friends cart, linked up mine and my little brothers gbas and played through it on my own controlling two Links. It was a crazy pain in the rear, but was definitely possible.

I actually did play the Four Swords content of ALTTP&FS! I barely remember it and the accompanying content it unlocked in ALTTP, but I kinda remember a basket and the boss fight of the bonus dungeon.

Four Swords is almost like its own game but I also kinda look at it as ALttP GBA’s multiplayer mode too. It’s a bit short if considered standalone (although it has a good deal of replay value), and ALttP and Four Swords are so integrated together for unlocks in both games. They’re meant to go together even though they can work independently too. And for that, I think it’s really awesome. Definitive ALttP with a really cool multiplayer side mode/game. If the screen and audio were the same as the SNES version, it’d be the best version in all regards. But overall, as much as I love the SNES masterpiece, the GBA version is probably gonna be the best for non diehard fans. It’s so cool to finally have easy access to more ALttP content that so many people didn’t even know about or experience. And yeah, Tri Force heroes is really underrated. It’s meant to be played in multiplayer, and it does a great job of that. I do prefer ALttP & Four Swords for obvious reasons, it’s such a good combo of single player and multiplayer that’s hard to beat. But just comparing the Four Swords part, Tri Force Heroes stands better as its own game. Even tho Four Swords also has its advantages against it.

I was really lucky in this regard. I got a used copy of A Link to the Past/Four Swords, and by complete chance it was a cartridge where Four Swords was already complete including that 10 medals thing.

Well, Jon, I can name at least two reasons other than Single Player as to why Tri Force Heroes is often treated like rubbish. 1. Region locking! You couldn't play online with people from other regions. 2. Translation! The JP and NoE versions are fine as they are. The NoA version was...much worse; very cringey and meme-laced. 3. They changed it to Toon Link from ALBW Link for no reason, and that combo of w the silly nature of the game made it a not-so-great "sequel" to ALBW. It was kind an afterthought in that regard. That being said of course, modding your 3DS allows one to bypass these previous issues. Pretendo allows for region-free online play, and mods allow you to change how Link's standard tunic and Great Fairy suit to resemble ALBW Link. Although you could also use the Toon Link mod for ALBW too if you wanted to. But either way perhaps we were too harsh on TFH, just like with Zelda II. I thought I lost my copy after replaying ALBW but found it after ordering a new used one, so I'm sending it to my estranged brother in the hopes that we can reconnect through Zelda online.

So if I met a girl who wanted to play multiplayer Zelda, chances are she could be the one =) In all seriousness, though, I love these videos that dig into obscure content in games. triforce heroes was such a blast for me, i got it first day and online play was so much fun, the ammount of detail that game have is amazing, the diynamic music, easter eggs, the puzzles were fun and the bosses are pretty good, my 3ds online died on triforce heroes, i admit the story its the weak point, but still its enjoyable, has a lot of replay value, and its challenging, i do wish they make a multiplayer zelda collection one day

The GBA era really had a thing with making cool content in games almost impossible to play, huh? Part of it definitely wasn't the games' fault or anything, but it is very funny that to get the super Spin Attack you need to: - Know people IRL who also have the game and are willing to play Four Swords with you many times over - Own a link cable so you even can play together - Talk to a random NPC and then do 10 fetch quests for them, because why not I'm sure that all felt great for the 10 people who could actually do it, though. :)

I settled for trying A Link to the Past... and I was not prepared to play one of the greatest action/adventure games ever created.

You didn't really need cane of somaria for that puzzle, you could also do it with timed bomb on the conveyor belt (I think that was the intended solution because of the presence of the conveyor belt.

I have, but I only managed to do the pre-reqs only once. I tell you from experience, both attempting to play Four Swords and trading Gen 1-3 Pokemon, those link cables ABSOLUTELY DID NOT want to stay plugged in. I still have my originals (cables _and_ cartridges, actually) and can remember one time a friend and I attempted to go through FS only for accidental jostling to cause CONSTANT communication errors (this experience still causes me to dislike multiplayer in general). But persistence eventually won out and I was able to access all the extra ALttP content. I believe I still have the same save file on that cartridge but knowing how GBA save batteries tend to die after so long I'm sure it won't last much longer. Also, don't know who needs to hear (read) it, but FOUR SWORDS GBA AND FOUR SWORDS ADVENTURES ON GAMECUBE ARE TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT GAMES. I get the pack-in thing and the multiplayer-only thing caused fewer people to play it and therefore made it more obscure (and apparently the GC title didn't sell that well on top of that?), but they've got different plots, items, _titles,_ etc., and it's not like it's hard to find Zelda information.

Back in the day I had to learn a glitch to enter the dungeon without playing Four Swords (it's too complicated to explain but if you've seen speedruns of the game, you can imagine what they do). I'll try it on NSO soon. I'm not sure if my current internet connection allows me to play NSO with others which is sad to think about lol

I am in the same boat - never could play Four Swords because freinds didn't have the game. I also got Tri-Force Heroes and tried to play with friends single-card style on my many 3DS units, but it didn't really work all that well for some reason. I do agree though, that when played properly (and working), it's actually great! So is Federation Force, though I never had anyone to play with on that either.

I played this on DSi a couple years ago, and I too had to get a save file from some guy to play the extra content for ALTTP. I like to think all the Zelda games are just refining mechanics for the eventual sequel to Marvelous: Another Treasure Island 😂

Interesting how four swords came before minish cap! I think its great to be able to play a zelda with friends.. my friends arent gamers so they would never play.. looks good though i bet its fun

Isn’t only experience perhaps Four Swords on GBA was the single player enabled release on DSi Well this just past Friday, I FINALLY got to play it multiplayer. only two player but still.. and it was awesome!

Jon will play Four Swords with me?! OH NO! No for real. I'd love to play Four Swords. XD I honestly love both Four Swords games a lot. Four Swords Adventures had that crazy fun battle mode that I wish I got to experience with four people more.
