In the 80's, this game was awesome for what we had. It still holds up today. I tell my kids the first two Zelda's were the training grounds for the REAL Heroes of Time.
Whether people like the first two Zeldas or not there is no denying how special and impressive they were! I personally also really enjoy Zelda 1. Part of that is because I already know where a bunch of stuff is, and some people don’t like how obtuse it feels to them, but they’re still rad adventures!
That’s an interesting thing to note! In most of my old videos I was living in an iffy home situation but I’m currently living with my girlfriend whom I love dearly, so maybe that’s helping!
0:35 To me it's obvious: in his opinion it's a bad game because it's not the game he wanted it to be, but since he knows how hard it was on the staff and that nowadays a ton of people love it, he clarifies that it isn't a bad game for everyone But then again, this is just me spitballing and trying to make sense of words said 10 years ago, so who knows
Japanese people are often indirect and don't like confrontation or uncomfortable tension. It is not surprising that Shigeru was apprehensive when asked if he had ever made a bad game. I thought Zelda II was interesting. The music was great and it was so different to the previous game.
@@DoujinShinji agree 100% One of my favorite video game themes I fell in love with it the first time I heard it in August 2018. I've always paid more attention to BGM than the actual content no matter what the media is.
I love Zelda II so much. It's one of my top 3 Zelda's of all time. I absolutely LOVE the changes you've made to it!! is there any way I can play this for real?? The widescreen presentation looks so clean
I must elaborate that *I* didn’t make this, but I’m glad I was able to show you that it exists! And you can play it! Pop in “Zelda II remake” into a search engine and it should pop up quick… 👀
"Unless you have the instinct to stab everything, you'll be needing a kid on the ground, or nintendo power." Or unless an EMPTY house with SEEMINGLY nothing in it doesn't give you a CLUE, as it SHOULD.
Fr when I first played this game back in 2019, I had forgotten all about that room until I walked in, said "table?" Out loud, went over, grabbed the mirror, and realized I already knew the "I found a mirror under the table" line and forgot
Beat the game back in the '80s. This is a title I've come back to nearly every year since. Probably my favorite game of all time, just based on how often I've played it. This new and updated version of Zelda 2 is a dream come true. Although I'm not a fan of the jumping puzzles, the game covers one of my problems I've had with the game, in that the original is way too short.
Not many people know this, but pressing O opens an options menu. In here, you can change the soundtrack to an updated (VRC6) version, which sounds absolutely amazing.
I love the first one but long ago I remember asking stores for The Adventure of Link (Not knowing it was a sequel). Just reading about it and the teases in the magazine made my mind wonder. I was told it would not be out for months and maybe try this other game.. Called The Legend of Zelda. That began my love for this franchise. Oh I wish I could go back to the 80s again..😪😭😭
found your channel thru the ecco the dolphin video, really really enjoy your content, especially your last video on betterified 6 bestified, extremely indepth and interesting dive into a video essay of something i otherwise would have never known about. its clear you put loads of time, effort, and care into these videos. something i do have to admit is that your titles are really bad lol, since based off of them i didn't think they were video essays and instead more like content mill letsplay slop. when i saw the title for "MARIO LOST HIS MEMORY?!", when combined with the video's length i initially assumed it was just gonna be a raw, unedited livestreamed playthrough of some random mario thing, not a feature length video essay on a criminally underrated romhack. if you want more people who enjoy watching pretentious video essays on esoteric, frivolous topics checking out your channel (like me lol), i'd recommend making the titles less content mill-esque with the caps lock and punctuation, instead opting for more contrived stuff like "The Best Mario Rom Hack I've Seen in Years" or "What Zelda II Could Have Been" though, if you specifically don't want to bring too much attention to your channel (which i can def see you wanting, given some of the stuff you cover, such as this video's subject matter), just keep doing what you're doing lol. either way, keep up the good shit and keep making whatever you wanna make.
Yeeaaah I was just thinking that exact thing as well, earlier today in fact, when it came to the Betterified VI video. I was trying to appeal to viewers who don’t know the subject beforehand, and I’m also tired of “the best [x] you NEVER heard of” titles. But yeah, either way, coming up with titles is hard and I don’t disagree with you. LOL Would be nice to get more views tho 🥴
@@DoujinShinji yeah it is really hard to come up with original interesting titles that actually get people's attention lol good luck with that tho, because other than that i really appreciate your channel. again, keep doing the stuff you like, overtime you'll get a pretty sizeable viewerbase since at its core your content is good and high quality, just wish the titles and thumbnails better showed that
Ive beat Zelda 2 maybe 10 to 15 times. About every other years I do a Zelda 1 and 2nd quest. Zelda 2 and Zelda 3, Link to the Past replay. Out of all 3 of them. To me was finding out how to cross the river in Saria town. Or as i call it Watertown in the second game was the hardest thing to figure out in those 3 gamez. By luck I found the cabin in the woods. So i don't understand the dislike this game gets. I would have loved if the did a remake of the other games in this way.
Really great review. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. There is a really good ROM hack of Zelda 2 as well that takes the difficulty down. Redux I think it's called.
This needs speedruns! Wow! We need info for playing this! I will GIT GUD for that very run! There are a few Zelda Classic quests I would like to try too!
It’s really fun! I wish more people played it and I wish Nintendo gave it more love. Maybe if we ever got that SNES remake whose files were found in that Nintendo giga leak things would be a bit different.
What's the thing about the psychonauts meat circus level? I remember to just beat it like it was just another level. Remember having to climb a lot though, but it wasn't that hard.
I stopped the video after 6 seconds just to say that Zelda 2 is the best fuckin zelda game. I love the game, the music, the graphics. everythang about it. you are wrong about whichever other zelda game you think is better. thank you.
Have you played Infernax yet? Play “casual” mode, it’s more fun that way. And it has co-op, multiple endings, buncha stuff. The co-op was added later but was surprisingly really well polished.
Hope you have fun with it if you check it out! I’d try to do a pure good playthrough first. And if you ever wanna play with a friend, there’s steam remote-play!
Watched a pretty terrible long play of this... can't remember the channel but the guy absolutely REFUSED to upgrade defense at all... about midway through the game he just keeps dieing over and over and over and complaining about it while continuing to not level defense..... it was awful.
Zelda 2 not getting much love but i enjoyed it, yeah it.could have been "more" but they were still fighting small cart memory size. It maybe considered the black sheep.of the fsmily buy i think its effect on the series is more than what people give it credit.
All my favourite games are always unpopular, this is my favourite nes game followed by simons quest The fan version looks good, just wish it was making it harder rather than easier, I feel like the people likely to play it would by Zelda ii fans that would prefer a bigger challenge than upgrades to make the game easier Also, the last dungeon is my favourite part of the game…. Is this another unpopular opinion?
I didn’t mention it in the video but there’s also a randomizer mode. Still worth checking out, even if it looks maybe too easy for you, I feel! I don’t like Simon’s Quest, but I like what it COULD be. Have you played Infernax? Excited for The Transylvania Adventure of Simon Quest? EDIT: I also didn’t mention in the video, but I feel the hit detection for the first couple of bosses are ‘tighter’, making them harder to hit. I found it a bit annoying but maybe you’ll like the change, as it does make the fights more difficult!
@@DoujinShinji i will absolutely be trying the transylvania adventure of simons quest, looking forward to that. cant say ive heard of infernax? similar type of game to simons quest?
@paulbyrne-groves3572 Infernax is very much inspired by Castlevania II and Zelda II. It pushes for more blood and violence, has multiple endings depending on how pure or evil you are, and even has a great co-op mode. It’s really good if you like the style of gameplay!
@@nickcarroll8565 haha, dont think i came across simons quest in nintendo power, me and my sister must of called the nintendo hotline a good few times though
Would love to play this remake! I love Zelda 2 the way it is with all the downsides. It's def not a perfect made game. The international version is in fact better than the japanese but still room for improvements. I have to say that. But I've played that game a lot and beaten it many times. I simply want new challenges: 2nd quest and so on. One of the craziest things in Zelda 2 is really that mirror that you need to pick up but you will never see it! It's insane and it makes no sense. And why not "copy" Mega Man 2 with two or three difficulty modes? And I don't see the japanese as difficult and international/US as "normal". That's what I hope that Nintendo can do. And what if Nintendo can add "fan made remakes" on Switch Online? Pay 10 dollar extra per year for ROM hacks for Zelda 1 and 2 and also for all other retro games! I would love to support ROM hacks developers financially in an easy way. This remake of Zelda 2 should be on NSO as the "ROM hacks additions" that I wrote about.
"You just said you made a bad game, why are you side stepping?" is kind of a bad thing to front load the video with. Like you've never quickly answered a yes or no question then realized immediately after that has nuance to it. This is especially true if the game he was thinking of was Zelda II. I wouldn't describe it as bad so much as polarizing, but the fact that it is polarizing means there's a lot of people that consider it outright bad. I was a kid in the 80s and would describe my elementary school reaction to it as 'disappointed' but I played and liked it anyway.
if it doesn't run on a legit famicom its not the definitive way to play it, i'm all about improvement rom hacks but once you get outside of what the original console is capable of its cheating
how do you feel about emulators that improve performance or have wide-screen and HD graphics that weren’t possible on the og? Idk, sounds like an odd sticking point, and calling it ‘cheating’ doesn’t really service anything but discrediting people who worked on these projects
@@Me126546 i don't mean that you are cheating by playing the game, i mean the person that created the rom hack is cheating by using hardware and software that enhances a game to the point that it no long works on intended hardware. HD rom hacks are possible on like most playstation era games and newwer but once you get older than that the hardware just generally can't do it.
Should probably have mentioned that this is called Zelda 2: Link is Adventuresome by Hoverbat. Easier to find that way. If you actually liked Zelda 2 you'll LOVE this. I've already played through it three times.
