I've done two years without doing speed runs, because of work. This was my first attempt at this after a few weeks of save state work. Instantly beat my old best time due to the new trick:
The game wants you to use all six gems before being able to enter Palace 7. But it doesn't care where you use them, so if you actually pause after letting go of the gem at a Palace statue, then push up+a on Controller 2 to Continue/Save, you'll lose the gem, but not place it in the statue.
So basically after this run, Link just leaves a few gems sitting on the floor in Parapa Palace, bypassing the need to get Reflect, fight the Palace 4 and 5 bosses, and enter Palace 6 at all.
This isn't a great run. I'm rusty. But my fundamentals are better than they were before (I'm so much more consistent at the early caves, for example). I'm back.
