April 26, 2024, Slavutich, Ukraine. President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky honored the courage of Ukrainians who defended life while eliminating the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster: “38 years ago there was a disaster in Chernobyl. A radiation accident, the consequences of which went far beyond the borders of this region, all of Ukraine and even our entire Europe. The world felt this catastrophe. But still it was localized. People stood up for life and fulfilled their duty - everyone who was involved at that time. Our people stopped the fire at the Chernobyl station. Three Chernobyl nuclear power units were saved. The area was decontaminated. They built a sarcophagus that covered what was left after the explosion at the fourth reactor. We built a system for monitoring and controlling the situation at the station and in the Chernobyl zone. Behind every such action there are thousands of heroes, thousands of brave characters. I would now like to express our respect to all the people in Slavutich - each and everyone who retained the courage and dedication to protecting life, who saved us all in 1986 and helped Ukraine in the spring of 22. Slavutych did not submit to the occupiers. Showed his character. Fought. Defended himself. We saw you in this square. We also saw the heroism of those of our people who, under Russian occupation, worked on station shifts. All this then helped our entire state to stop the unfolding of the catastrophe brought by the Russian army. People saved Ukraine in 22, and only to people, to all our people, Putin is losing. Any evil cannot stand against a brave people who do everything to protect life. This is exactly what our people are like. I thank all those who defended life 38 years ago! I thank each and everyone who resisted the enemy in ’22!”
