I will explain: “Two ways.” leads the listener, or reader to assume that two answers will be given. However, the joke is that only one answer is given. “Gradually, then suddenly.” So, a progression similar to exponential curve. The joke is made even funnier when, people don’t read, or listen correctly, and assume two alternate answers are given.
