Zen forest house: 11K, handcrafted, small home in Oregon

Brian Schulz wanted to see "how small of a house I could make feel big". Inspired by the traditional Japanese Minka homes that rely on local materials and steeply sloped roofs to create affordable, open structures, Schulz created a home using materials salvaged or sourced from within 10 miles of his home.
The result is a 14-by-16-foot home in tune with its surroundings that cost only 11,000 dollars - mostly for concrete, shakes, and insulation-, along with about a year and half of Schulz's spare time.
Much of the wood Schulz collected from the bay while kayaking (he teaches traditional wood kayak-building for a living) and then he milled it himself on-site. Corner posts were blowdown trees from a friend's forest. Kitchen counters were milled from a fallen tree he'd held onto for 8 years. The stair railing is alder poles cut from beside the house.
The 3 tables in the home were cut from cedar found on the beach and constructed in 2 hours. He laid flooring using low-grade reject fir, created trim using miscellaneous scrapwood and bought all the home's windows for $40 from the local dump (the french doors came from craigslist).

That staircase is absolutely insane. I cannot believe how he did that-and then says afterwards that he does not have a lot of patience. Whaaattttt??!!!! My family has been here since 1840 and asshole capitalist Naturalist posers like these ruined the property values here by skyrocketing them out of local affordability. @lenwenzel7440

It really looks great! Estheticaly it's beautiful and I like how it looks. How ever with such little depth to the the stair treads it's somewhat unsafe. If you notice he carefully tip toed up the stairs because he couldn't fit his entire foot on each stair. When that's the case every occasion when someone uses the stairs in a hurry, or when they are tired and their balance is not good say in the dark half asleep the chance of a serious fall go way up. If you noticed there is also no hand rail. Also the pitch of the stairs is rather steep. Chances for a recovery from a slip or mis step goes way down. Losing safety for esthetics is not a choice I would make. It really doesn't take much of a risk factor to make accidents likely. All that is needed is time.

They are obsessed with visions of perfection, details that only they can see, all that swirling around in their heads. What I love about this home is that of all the small homes I've seen, this feels the most spacious. This home isn't about sloughing off your worldly possessions in order to fit in a smaller space, it is about bringing you closer to the nature around you, but not feeling confined while you are inside. I would actually really love a home like this, though I would have to adjust the floor plan to add a second room for my kid, but I don't think that would be out of place in a build like this.

beautiful house. it feels awfully big and it has a cool zen but i dont think he lives there. where would the food go? where would his clothes go? and were is the bathroom. like at least a compost toilet and an outdoor shower but i didnt see anything. do you know something about this Kristen? is it like a place to relax instead of a place to live for him?

He did live in this with his fiance, but has recently moved out (I will post a video of what he is living in now... a converted shed on the same property-- he helps run an organic farm.. also have a video coming of this). I didn't film the toilet, but you can see photos of it on the link @ bottom or text (and other photos he's taken of the place).

Thanks a lot for the info Kristen. Quick reply too. I got a scholarship for berklee in boston. Its still a lot of money i would have to get to get by the whole 3 years as i got the general courses approved. If i accept it i would start on september 2014 and this little houses are definetley a possibility. Thanks for all. Best Regards. Cheers from Puerto Rico

This is one of the most beautiful houses I've seen in a long time. There are many log home, giant log cabin shows on TV and they are just obnoxious and large. This is perfect.

I love what Brian created. Great job. I have only one question: where is the fridge. Being someone who enjoys cooking, one needs to have someplace to keep the food.

There were no fridges in the early 1800's, 1700's, etc. so I take it that he uses what grows in the garden and/or mostly dry ingredients? Also many root vegetables stay good for a very long time unrefridgerated. At least that's what I think he does, given that he's a vegeterian/vegan. I wonder how big of a wheat field it takes to have enough for a reasonably sized loaf of bread.

This is amazing and so inspirational. He made a beautiful house by himself, from the land and with the land. That's just amazing

No way this place only cost 11k, there is land cost, transportation of "free" materials and personal labor, not working at official job cost money. How much does this place really cost?!
@gooseknack

He moved the materials himself which equals free labor. As far as land cost goes, many don't count that in the cost.

Nothing is free, especially pristine land in forest. What is his real cost?!

zoticus1 Have you been paying for your oxygen? I get it for free where I live.

are you seriously trying to compare air to land?
