Overview of the Zenith Trans-Oceanic 600 Series Radio. It was the final incarnation of a distinguished line of Zenith shortwave tube radios. It is historically significant because it was the last portable vacuum tube radio made in the USA It was produced from 1959-1962, and highly prized in its day.

That is a nice example of the last version of the tube based Zenith Transoceanic. The reason you are getting mostly noise is because of electrical interference from florescent and LED bulbs. Dimmer switches and some electronics will also interfere with reception when plugged into AC power. The batteries are non existent but a suitable one can be built supplying 90 volts for the tube plates and 9 volts for the filaments. Someone has obviously restored this radio as I doubt that it would function with the original filter capacitors. I have restored many of these and they are great radios. The rod antenna is only used for shortwave reception, it does not work for AM Broadcast band. The Wavemagnet on the top of the case is removable and can be placed near a window and rotated for best reception. SW reception is typically better at night but some stations can be heard during the daytime. turn off the offending lights until you get a clear signal then you can listen to stations a long distance away.

The radio was definitely serviced at least once, but probably decades ago. It is noted in the User Guide, but the date is not mentioned.

@@brianjay8679 Wow! You got a very good deal! I love shortwave radio and miss my old two transoceanics I had to sell after my parents transcended to the hands of God and I moved on. I would take my mother on picnics. She would rest and read and write on a foling lounge. I would put my big transoceanic on my chest and slowly in late afternoon tune in stations all over the world. I loved it. In 2005 there were more stations in operation and not sure how many left today because of the internet. I was taking my radio back to our car and some little kids with their father... one asked if that was my tackle box ha! I opened it up and showed them the tubes and all and they were fascinated, had never heard of a tube radio! I love moments like that too! If you don't have time right away don't plug it to 110 volts and get a battery pack. I still have mine that I got on eBay. It takes 9 D cell batteries and is less taxing on the circuitry. I was busy and working on other less complex radios and just used my battery pack with both of my transoceanics. You'll have a lot of fun. Tune in on AM in the night and you can get stations all over the USA!

Very nice overview. I'm impressed that at its age it still powers on. Often with old radios the capacitors die and need to be replaced.

What a great radio you’ve found. So good it’s going to be kept. Rarely found in the UK / I managed to finally buy a fine example today! It’s an iconic American Radio / Dave Shaw G4NOW in London

Nice to watch this as I miss my Zenith radios. I had the A600L and the "L" meant leather. It had a brown leather covering. You're fortunate that map door hasn't broken at the hinge meaning the hinge would break off the plastic, a common problem. I never plugged my radio into the AC until I was going to work and put in a new transformer. They say to never plug an old radio in. You were very lucky it didn't burn out the transformer. It's sad as you're right there are very few traditional shortwave stations. There are some but very few because of the internet. I bought a battery pack on eBay and used 9 D cell batteries and only ran it on battery. I also had the B600 from about 1962. They were the last portable tube radios Zenith made. It was my hobby while taking care of my mother and also helped my father who lived 4 miles away. Oh, another thing is the plastic front getting chips and cracks. If they removed the front it was common they would tighten the screws too tight and crack the plastic and today that reduces the value. My radios I bought in the most pristine condition I could find. Another common thing was the big antenna would be damaged. I would own one today but had to sell my old radios after my mother and father transcended.

I'm working on a y600 almost identical to yours. Your radio would probably have excellent sound with a few capacitors? Thanks for the video.

I was 16 years old when I saw my grand fathers Zenith T.O. radio. I was never allowed to touch it, even tho I was a licensed ham. Today, I have a transistorized Zenith T.O. radio for my SHTF radio. and I keep it ready at all times, with fresh batteries ready to drop in. If any of my grand kids showed interest in it, I would gladly show them the operation, as it still picks up many short wave stations around the world! But sadly, my computers and retro game systems hold more interest for them! Before you use that radio for too long, I would have it gone thru for safety, as the paper and electrolytic caps can and do go bad, and will short out, sometimes burning out IF transformers or power transformers.
