Ever wondered where the philosophy of Stoicism started? Zeno of Citium was the name of its founder; from shipwrecked merchant to philosopher, this video will explore the life and mind of the first stoic.
Originally named Zenoism and later changed to Stoicism, named after the stoa poikile or “painted porch.” This philosophy originated in Athens around 300 B.C.E and was also wildly popular among the Romans. Some notable Stoic philosophers are the emperor Marcus Aurelius, the adviser Seneca the Younger, the slave Epictetus, and Chrysippus.

I agree, it is quite the shame that so much philosophic prose has been lost to history; Zeno, Heraclitus, Democritus, Chrysippus, Cleanthes, the list goes on.

I think both of them would say that thier teaching could be found in hearts and minds of any person. One only needs to search one's own mind to find what is true. It may take a lifetime of searching, but it would not be a wasted life.

@@davidth.o.g.2229 i actually find your words true, i actually without even knowing zeno or anyother philosopher, have a few thoughts matching to them , which I discovered in my brain itself ... Like my belief on God matched to the thought of zeno !, And even few other things as well. This greatly shocked me that there used to live a man who had same thoughts as me ...and now I am trying to know about him . By the way I lately discovered that I have a personal connection with philosophy . This is just messing my brain up . The strange thing is my name itself means .. A man of philosophy. 🥴😬✌️

@@vedantagarwal2349 Then that is a great name, and yes, it's amazing what can be discovered in one's own mind. Socrates believed the knowledge of the universe was contained in every individual, one only needed to access it. Congratulations on the awakening of your mind and I hope that you realize how blessed you are to be of conscious mind. Not everyone has this blessing and it is unfortunate, but reality. So enjoy and be vigilant in your repayment. You now owe a debt to be exactly what you are as you have been blessed with it. It's not going to always be easy, but you will come to realize it's the only real choice you have if you want to find happiness. Good luck brother and Merry Christmas 🍻

I feel like these old-school Greek philosophers were basically the self-help gurus of their day. Sometimes they spoke sense, sometimes nonsense; in either case, people wanted guidance, and many joined different schools-of-thought for this reason.
@LetsTalkPhilosophy
@LetsTalkPhilosophy 3 года назад
Often times, what I've observed is that as religious belief declines in a country and/or empire the level of philosophical discussion and thought flourishes. Presumably for the reason of "self-help" and "guidance." Like an ever revolving door, individuals always need something to make sense of life and its hardships/wonders.

@@LetsTalkPhilosophy I sadly did not see a flourishing of philosophical thought or even wish for such when I was "able" to visit the Soviet States in the 70s and 80s. They did not , as I found out recieve an Education on the topics that are discussed here and on other Philisophical Sites. A SAD World.

I feel like it's just empty words. What does it really mean to conquer yourself in concrete terms?
@LetsTalkPhilosophy
@LetsTalkPhilosophy 4 года назад
I think each person takes from it something unique. Some may only hear empty words, others may hear something more profound. In my opinion I think he refers to rising above our own human nature. If we can conquer our own emotions and judgments then we are in control of how we perceive the world. I hope that makes sense, thanks for taking the time to reply!
@mindpsych864
@mindpsych864 4 года назад
@@LetsTalkPhilosophy It does make sense. People are governed by their emotions which contributes to an unfair society. If people could be more objective in their judgements instead of being governerd by group thinking and emotions we'd be considered less primitive.
@LetsTalkPhilosophy
@LetsTalkPhilosophy 4 года назад
There be the issue, throughout history the fools have always vastly outnumbered the wise. I think Stoicism would do many people well to read into in today's age. I recognize that conquering your emotions is possibly the most difficult thing to achieve in life, but a little effort goes a long way. Being objective certainly helps!

It is interesting how he was a merchant of shellfish, specifically the ones that produced purple dye, for nobility of the time. To lose such a valuable cargo and, at the time, be left with nothing, is what set Zeno on the path of philosophy. He later recognized how he was never more rich than when he lost everything. This is significant in a way due to the Stoic view on material things and power, as we'd see most notably with Marcus Aurelius. The purple robes of an emperor were such a prominent status symbol, and something that Marcus wished to avoid, preferring to dress down and live a more austere lifestyle.

It's kinda weird how he, as someone that practices and even inventing Stoicism, would commit suicide over such a small thing as falling over and breaking their toe... something is very off with this (I don't mean with the video but the historical accuracy of this detail around his death)
@LetsTalkPhilosophy
@LetsTalkPhilosophy 2 года назад
Good observation, and you very well may be correct; unfortunately we only have those bits of information which were passed down to us, and very little of it at that. It may be that he found the life which was ahead of him degrading in some sense. From what I can remember the Stoics did not forbid suicide in certain circumstances. I cannot well remember what I read in some commentary on the Enchiridion a few years ago, though I'm certain it spoke on this. On the other hand it may simply be patently false. Thanks for taking the time to watch and contribute to the conversation!

@MACEDONIAN88
@MACEDONIAN88 2 года назад
Well, the stoic philosophy gives a bitter view on life it self, without the exit strategy for the soul, as it is unnatural to the human psyche to be upstanding in everything that life throws at it, and you can think of Zeno breaking his toe to be the drop that overfilled the glass, reaching his breaking point, add to that, that they were pro suicide...you get a person holding his breath until dead.

I was taught that it was Heraclitus who held his breath, strangled himself (or covered himself in manure and was eaten by dogs.) Apparently, the way many ancients died is unrecorded and therefore given over to rumor or speculation.

Thank you for your amazing work. One kind correction: Zeno was a Canaanite (Phoenician) of the city of citium ruled by Tyre in that era. He spent most of his life in Athens. Zeno is said to have declined Athenian citizenship when it was offered to him, fearing that he would appear unfaithful to his native land. Thanks again.
