That BC Classic performance was just amazing. It’s all well and good being last and coming around the whole field in mares races, but to take on the best Colts in the world and come from last to first off the bend shows what an amazing burst of speed she had. Honestly don’t think I’ve seen many horses with that burst of speed at the end of a 10 furlong race. She made world class horses look average the way she won that race

I love the comment on Zenyatta's 2nd race in this clip. Her allowance win at Hollywood Park when David Flores was still riding her. The announcer say's "Zenyatta is making a mockery of this field." David Flores looked like he could've been sitting back in the saddle giving himself a manicure, and Zenyatta would've went right on by herself. LOL.

This mare has yet to run "full out" .... her ears are always pricked and she is just loping along, right into the winner's circle. I cry every time I watch her run. I am so grateful to have been alive when this mare was running. How special she is and how glad her owners brought her back again this year. She loves racing and we all love to watch her. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

What an exceptionally well educated TB. Not many can use their backs the way she does. The faux Spanish Walk in the mounting yard is the perfect warm-up exercise. Credit must go to whoever started her under saddle & the exercise rider, who knows "balance is key" to a large horse. In every race Zenyatta travels on her near lead all the way, until the final turn. Then she rounds the bend, straightens, changes of lead; Fresh muscles & from there the race is over. CONGRATULATIONS TO HER TEAM.

In my over 40 years as a racing fan, I've never seen a horse with a turn of foot as explosive as Zenyatta's - neither male nor female. Simply the most spectacular runner I have ever seen. Even on her bad days, she overcomes adversity to be first at the finish line. Mike Smith said it best, she's not just "Horse of the Year," but "Horse of the Decade."

Most of the truly great thoroughbred's that history acknowledges were either blazing front runners or very effective stalkers that just exploded from 4 or 5 length's off the pace to go on and win. It's almost unheard of for a horse that's such a deep closer to be explosive enough to consistently run down and blow on by field's the way that Zenyatta has her whole career. I've just never seen a horse that when her jockey ask her to go just eat's up so much ground in such a short time as her.

Running Down a Dream I’m glad you asked, because the selection is vast. There are some who make a case for Rachel Alexandra being a better filly, given her dominance over the boys. Zenyatta ran only against other fillies for 18 of her 20 starts.... but I’m willing to accept that she probably was better. The problem though comes when you consider this big place that’s not in America called THE REST OF THE WORLD. If you include in her generation horses born 3-4 years either side of her there is a great selection of outstanding distaffers. Sunline for example won a host of open WFA and handicaps including a win over Hong Kong champion Fairy King Prawn in a Dubai Duty Free. FKP would have lapped Blame. Zarkarva won 8 races unbeaten in France at 3, culminating in an Arc, which is much more difficult race to win than a BCC. Makybe Diva won 3 Melbourne Cups, the third carrying more weight than any filly in history. All 3 of these received the same Timeform ratings (129) as Zenyatta, which I think is ridiculous. But again, I’m willing to accept it. There are quite a few others I think also worth a mention but these are just some obvious examples. But then there was Black Caviar... and I’m afraid here Zenyatta’s record gets absolutely blown out of the water by a 3 times world champion. They aren’t even comparable. BC’s Timeform rating was 137... So, if one was to say that Zenyatta was the best filly on dirt ever I could probably concede. Without those qualifiers though it’s nonsense.

@TheEnglandWC, personally, had he came to the Breeders Cup in 2009, I think it would've depended on how STS had taken to the surface at Santa Anita. If he ran it as well as he did turf, then he's the only colt that would've had a legit shot at beating her at Santa Anita. But if he didn't take to the surface, then he would've been another casualty of war that day, IMO. I say that believing that STS is one of, if not the greatest turf horse I've seen in my lifetime.
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 14 лет назад
@dancingbrave24, not sure how you can say that. Given Dancing Brave was a Turf horse and Zenyatta primarily a synthetic horse, who's never raced on turf. How do you know Zenyatta wouldn't have dusted Dancing Brave or STS on poly-track? On turf, I'm sure either of them would've been able to defeat her. But with Dancing Brave or STS never having been proven on this type of surface, you can't just summarily dismiss Zenyatta as having a chance to beat them over this type of track. Not logically.JMO.
@GBeret83

@CPProductions13, Best female thoroughbred ever, that's for sure. But being old enough to have seen Secretariat win the Triple Crown in 1973, I still rate him as the greatest I ever saw, and I'm a HUGE Zenyatta fan!!! Secretariat ran 12 furlongs in the 73' Belmont Stakes in 2:24 flat. And won by 31 lengths. This horse was a machine. When a track or world record is broken, it's usually by 1/5, maybe 2/5 of a second. Secretariat took 2-2/5 seconds off of the record that day, which still stands.
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 14 лет назад
I just really think that Zenyatta has been done a great injustice during her racing career. This is a race-mare that's now 15 for 15 lifetime, a two time Breeders Cup champion in both Classic Divisions, the only female thoroughbred to ever win the Breeders Cup Classic since the inception of the race in 1984, and yet her amazing ability has never been awarded HOY. Ironically, both times, she's lost to a Jess Jackson owned horse. I live on the East Coast, and I know there's an East Coast bias.
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 14 лет назад
Rachel Alexandra is a fast, game filly that will hold her own with most on any race track. That said, I believe that Zenyatta is a mare that's "above" most. I just really believe that even on the dirt at Oaklawn, that Zenyatta will prove to be just too much mare for Rachel to handle. I think Rachel will set blistering early fractions, tier in the stretch, and that "like a runaway locomotive" closing kick of Zenyatta's will propel her past Rachel at the wire and into the winner's circle. TMO.

Well thanks for making my point. Who do you think you are telling me what videos I can watch and comment on? I said nothing mean, and I am a fan of Zenyatta. My main point is that opinions can be expressed in a classy way. This site and video is open to ANYONE...not just you. I'm sorry but you're just going to have to deal with that. You don't get to tell others what to do. That's not how youtube works. Zen fans do that all the time on Rachel vids. There is just no need to be rude. Good day.
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 14 лет назад
This information comes off of the Horseracingnation web-site. Both Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta just turned in 6 furlong breezes. Rachel Alexandra breezed 6 furlongs over a fast main track at Louisiana Downs in 1:14.00 flat. Zenyatta breezed 6 furlongs over the Hollywood Park main track in 1:13.20. For future Apple Blossom Invitational handicappers, make of those times what you will.
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 14 лет назад
Rachel Alexandra is vulnerable to deep closers. Even if you want to throw out the Preakness with MTB closing on her, that's fine, because he's proven himself to be a Grade 2 horse, and that's being very kind. But she certainly had no excuses with Macho Again closing on her in the Woodward. She was, without a doubt, full out to hold him off. Macho Again is a very respectable colt, but In Zenyatta's category as far as a closer, forget it. It'll be a close race, but Zen's too much mare for Rachel.
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 14 лет назад
After Jess Jackson's announcement of playing "doge ball" instead of horse racing in the 2010 Apple Blossom, if I'm Jerry Moss I put Zenyatta back into retirement undefeated as the only female to ever win the B.C. Classic. Moss was really doing racing a big favor by agreeing to race Zenyatta as a 6yr.old, wanting to prove he had the best filly. Agreed to race on conventional dirt, agreed to race at Oaklawn where both have won. Pathetic Jess Jackson, very pathetic. HOY, what a joke.
@rachelalexandra79
@rachelalexandra79 14 лет назад
How annoying would it be if I kept bringing up Anaaba's Creation? Or Briecat? Rachel's only competition was the clock. She ran 8 brilliant races. Are you saying all 8 were bogus? Breaking all those stakes time/length records means zero? Almost equalling track records at Monmouth and Belmont means nothing? Zenyatta primarily raced over surfaces that favored closers. Do u hold that against her, too? I don't. Since u mention Summer Bird, he trained badly over synthetic. Is that not unfavorable too?
@rachelalexandra79
@rachelalexandra79 14 лет назад
This is very true, but people don't want to admit it. I mean, you can find the quotes in articles where they said they were waiting to see who showed up, but somehow, even though it was announced way earlier in the year that Rachel would not be running in the Cup and Zen's connections didn't announce until days before the race they would be attempting the Classic, somehow they turn that into JJ was ducking Zenyatta. I wish people would stick to facts.
@rachelalexandra79
@rachelalexandra79 14 лет назад
Secretariat lost to Onion when he had a fever, and to Angle Light when he had a huge absess in his mouth. These comments that Zenyatta would beat Secretariat are absurd. He set world records, stakes records, track records, etc. He ran a 21 SECOND quarter in the Preakness. He ran 1:45 2/5 in the Marlboro Cup. Just the Belmont? I think not! Look at their past performances side by side. People need to stop getting carried away with these comments.
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 14 лет назад
It's already been announced and been new's on every horse racing web-site that Zenyatta is definitely going to race in 2010. Shireffs said her first start will likely be the San Margeritta Handicap at Santa Anita on March 13th as a tuneup. Then, most likely the Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn on April 1st. Other possible's are the Human Distaff at Churchill Downs. They said their long term goal is to run her again in the 2010 B.C. Classic at Churchill Downs.
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 14 лет назад
ruffianruiz, I think you're opinion is pretty spot on. I'm old enough that I got to see the great Ruffian race as well. She truly was remarkable. She was a front runner that set blistering fraction's. But like you said, Zenyatta just has the desire to run down and go by whatever horse lay in her path. She uses her size and stride length to her maximum potential. She's just one of those rare thoroughbred's that refuses to lose.
@GBeret83

It's very likely that the eclipse award voter's will give HOY honors to Rachel Alexandra, but in the eye's of the fan's, Zenyatta is their HOY. I've seen six different HOY polls, Zenyatta has won five of them by about 60% to 40% or in some cases 65% to 35%. The New York Times poll is the only HOY poll that I've seen that Rachel has won. I can't imagine why,lol. So no matter how the eclipse vote turn's out, to the fan's Zenyatta is clearly their HOY.
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 15 лет назад
Rachel is a filly with a lot of heart that has accomplished things that normal fillies just don't do, but Zenyatta is just a freak of nature. Built as big as and run's as fast as a colt. In my opinion, no matter what surface, no matter what distance, as long as Mike Smith gives her the correct ride, there's no way that Calvin and Rachel could stop the runaway locomotive called Zenyatta from catching her and blowing right on by her, just like in all of her other races.

IMO, the only thing that's going to beat Zenyatta is Zenyatta herself. If she ever just show's up at a race and think's to herself " I just don't feel like running today." Because with those huge, bounding strides and her ability to make up so much ground so quickly in the stretch, as long as she want's to win, she's going to win. Period, end of statement.
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 15 лет назад
There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that had they chosen to do so, Zenyatta could have been beating male's a lot sooner than she ever attempted to. And in my opinion would still be undefeated. She just has a closing kick that's second to none. And she's so big, it would have been just as affective against colt's. JMO.
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 4 года назад
A lot of people think Zenyatta should've been sent off to broodmare after winning the 09' Breeders Cup Classic so she could've retired with a perfect record. Maybe? But did she really actually lose anything in defeat in her second Breeders Cup Classic run? On a track she was not familiar with (Churchill Downs) taking on the winner Blame who's home track Churchill Downs was, and lest we forget, Blame was never beaten at Churchill Downs so he clearly loved the conventional dirt there. I'm not making any excuses for Zenyatta's loss, because Blame ran a great race and was a very worthy champion. But no matter how many times you watch the replay of the 2010 BC Classic, it clearly shows Blame got the run of the race. He sat right off the pace in the box the whole way and got about as easy of a trip as one could possibly hope to get on their home track. Zenyatta on the other hand, much like the way she started at Santa Anita in 2009, spun her wheels from too far off the pace for more than half the race, and while her turn of foot was always wicked, it simply wasn't as fast racing on conventional dirt as it was when she was racing on those synthetic surfaces out west. Especially the pro-ride surface at Santa Anita. You can watch either of her Apple Blossom wins at Oaklawn or the BC Classic at Churchill Downs and tell she didn't pickem' up and layem' down quite as quickly on the dirt as she did on synthetics, which has always made me curious about how dominate she might've been had she ever gotten the chance to race on turf? That said, showing the heart of true champion, she passed everything in her path that evening at Churchill Downs save Blame, and it was only a stride or so short right on the wire from running him down as well. Sometimes you learn as much about a horse and how much heart they really have in defeat as much as you do in victory. That was the case for me with Zenyatta during the 2010 BC Classic. I thought she lost absolutely nothing in defeat that day except her unblemished record.
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 14 лет назад
@kadir1982, me too. I live about 90 minutes from Churchill Downs, and plan on being at Churchill Downs for the Breeders Cup this year. I can't wait, because it will likely be Zenyatta's final race, Goldikova's final race, and they'll be talent a-plenty on display in Louisville that weekend.
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 14 лет назад
@cmcgarth1O, I personally think Dar Re Mi has an excellent chance of winning the Arc in 2010. I can't imagine she'll be running against any stronger of a field in the Arc than what she beat in the Sheema Classic. She ran a very respectable Arc in 2009 as well. IMO.
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 14 лет назад
Because of her running style, Zenyatta is never going to be a horse that win's by 10 or 15 lengths in eye catching style like Rachel Alexandra has. But her record and her rating speaks for itself. As Albert Einstein used to say "Mathematics don't lie son, mathematics don't lie.
@GBeret83
@GBeret83 14 лет назад
Curlin did race on turf, lost the Man O' War to Red Rocks in either 07 or 08. Why is it that it's okay for Curlin not to have run the Arc, but Zenyatta, a horse that's never ran one time on turf doesn't have any excuses? That doesn't really make any sense to me.

@gomezisgod0. Heart is just another word people like to use. . Its the horser ablility & conditioning.that counts when a jockey ask a horse for speed at the right time. He must know his horse & what he is capable of in any situation. A horse has no idea about what it means to win a race. He only knows what he is trained to do & not like a human that knows what winning means .I have yet to see a horse cry for losing a race.(smile) Its a 'No Brainer'.

continued_______________ As I was saying Jess Jackson might not show, 5 million is a lot, but he isn't hurting for money at all. Zenyatta's kick is just unbeatable in my opinion. They are both sensational. The interesting thing is, RA burned out pretty early in the season ( very understandable for her tough campaign, but she did tire nonetheless) and Zen has been great and perky, but she hasn't rested in a long time. This could help or hinder them both. We'll see. the race is on!
@DrivenStar
@DrivenStar 14 лет назад
I am a Zenyatta fan. I love Rachel, but in my opinion, Zen is the better horse. She raced all year in graded stakes, RA just raced half the year, although her small campaign was very tough I admit.Beating males in 3 hard races all with bad footing is no walk in the park,and she is still young and has shown a lot of heart.But Zen has shown she can be consistent.She has a lot of heart too,and in my opinion,she has more natural ability.RA will definitely be Zen's biggest challenge yet,if she shows.
@DrivenStar
@DrivenStar 14 лет назад
Lol I love them both, but Zenyatta is better in my opinion. She has ran on both surfaces, and is undefeated. Did you see that classic win? I know Rachel's races were great and against males, and by larger margins, but she is gonna run herself out , and she won't be able to hold off Zenyatta . But they both have so much heart, I'm not penalizing RA, but I think Zenyatta is better.

Mike Smith times Z's run to be fastest in the last furlong and usually does it brilliantly. The one time he didn't in the 2009 Hirsch at Del Mar, Z bailed him out with a 22:49 last 1/4. Secretariat's Belmont where he ran 12-12's over a deep soft Belmont track and 6f in stakes-winning sprinter time is even more un-be-lieve-able than Z's BCC win. Late in his 3yo year Secretariat gave hints of what he might have been as a 4 or 5yo, too bad we didn't get to see it.
@keybender
@keybender 14 лет назад
@gocashbaby True about running style and I agree with much of what you say. I'm not arguing that Zenyatta would always or usually beat Secretariat, quite the opposite. My opinion is that, on her best day, Z would be capable of winning especially if Secretariat was less than 100%. Z's jockey would have to take some risks like a longer drive to do it. S's average race was brilliant and his best beyond what horses are thought capable of but he did run the occasional clunker.
@keybender
@keybender 14 лет назад
I don't think Z is the greatest horse of all time either, but from what she has shown, I think she could compete against and sometimes win against the all-time greats. The problem is today's horses don't run enough races to really define their greatness. As for greatest female, Zenyatta, Zarkava,Rachel Alexandra and Ruffian are the greatest in my memory and Lady's Secret is close as well..

@gocashbaby That's what's wrong with horse racing today. Today's great horses don't really have a "body of work". run 8 or 10 good races with one or two brilliant G1 wins and it's off to the breeding shed. Even the early retirements of the past, Secretariat and Man O' War ran at least 20 races. It is taking a cheap shot at Zenyatta to mention one or two horses that really didn't belong in a G1 race, there were plenty of those in Sec's races. i.e. Sec's win at Arlington was just an exhibition.

@gocashbaby Then how do you explain Onion, Angle Light etc.? When you talk about 20 lengths ahead on cruising speed, you are talking about Secretariat in the Belmont not the typical Secretariat race. There are a lot of unknowns. Secretariat didn't race beyond his 3yo year how great would he have been at 4 or 5? Could Forego have beaten Secretariat as a 4 or 5yo? Forego is the horse from Secretariats era that is most like Zenyatta. How would Z finish if she ran harder 1 or 2f earlier?
@keybender
@keybender 14 лет назад
Of course Zenyatta could beat Secretariat. If they raced in full fields 10 times I would bet that Z would win at least one or two of those, much weaker horses than Z beat Secretariat, but Secretariat is still my personal favorite for all-time best horse and his Belmont win was probably the greatest race ever run by any horse. I would also bet that if Z ran 30 or 40 times she would get beat, likely more than once. That's why I don't like renaming the Lady's Secret. LS won 25 of 45 races.

@keybender 14 лет назад
@gocashbaby You and many others who post that Zenyatta only beat the same "weak horses" are just spreading JJ's propaganda. Ginger Punch, Hysterical Lady, Music Note and Life is Sweet are not weak horses, Big Z just made them look weak. JJ is nothing if not a master spin doctor. Last year when Curlin was up for the award it was all about lifetime achievement, Leading all-time money winner blah, blah. Now, it's you can't consider anything but 2009, RA wins 8 to 5.

I take my comment from earlier back. I do need to respond to this, because it annoys me. "Think of what Zenyatta has done this year." Well, for a career, Zens is better than RAs so far, but looking at THIS year, please dont ask that question of yours. How many times did Zen race? How many did RA? Just for a start. Zen ran ONE remarkable & prestigious race this year. RA ran FOUR, not to mention the rest of her wins. RA can prove more, but dont say she already hasnt and shes just 3. :(

Ok heres what i think! Zenyatta is totally Horse of the Year! yes i know Rachel Alexandra beat the boys three times. but who was she really racing against? Zenyatta she raced AGAINST the BEST Horse in the World. PLUS she had a troubled start in the begininng of the Breeders Cup Classic! now for those on the east side, dont just vote for RA because she's from ur area. just think of what Zenyatta has done this year. she could of been retired last year but she wasnt. RA needs to prove herself more!

Zenyatta is the best horse to come along in a long time. Regardless of how the vote goes we know she is the true horse of the year. You can't be the best unless you go against the best in the classic. Zenyatta did all that was ever asked of her. The handlers of Rachel could have run her in the classic, they didn't because they doubted that she could win. I agree with their decision. Zenyatta was too strong for anyone to beat her.

she's not a joke, but come on, she was life and death to hold off Macho Again at NINE FURLONGS with a 9 pound weight break. She only beat the mediocre Mine That Bird by a length with a 5 pound break. Her best race was over monmouth, which is historically favorable to Rachel's running style and totally unfavorable to Summer Bird's style

You know guys...I have loved every second of Zenyatta on and off the track..it has been a dream come true, but I have to honestly say that if she comes back and gets hurt or in the worst nightmare has to be put down..it would be the end of horse racing for me. I was devastated when Barbaro got hurt and the only reason I survived that was because Zenyatta came along.

Given her racing style and turn of foot, it seems she would be a marvelous turf performer. If I handled her, I would be tempted to prep her for the European classics such as the King George and the Arc (where the purse is more than 20X as great as today's race).

@patr70 The Clement Hirsch G1 was the strength of mind she has. She just won't give up until she has the field well-beaten or she hits the wire. I don't think there is any horse, Sea the Stars, Zarkava or Rachel (obviously now) Alexandra. None of them have ANYthing for Zenyatta.

I think they should interview Ramon D. He lost both Breeders Cups to Zenyatta, with horses that were all out. Cocoa Beach and Gio Ponti both 2nd place. That must suck looking at Z both years just flying by you, knowing there is absolutly no way your getting by that big machine. GO Z!!

Zen reminds me of a filly version of the mighty Forego. Seemingly beat but a thunderous stretch drive to get up in time. There may always be comparisons to RA and who was better but I just appreciate the beauty of excellence both those great fillies exhibited.

If Zen and RA meat in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic against the best of the best running a mile and a quarter... I'm confident Zen would fly past Rachel winning by a length. RA can't go that distance against males. Don't get me wrong I love RA but Zen would win.

well that plastic made racing SAFER! there were NO Horses that were put down during BC weekend. AND the BC was made SO the BEST horses could race eachother. Jackson chickened out, and didnt let Rachel PROVE she is HOY. Zenyatta raced in it. and yes their were the BEST horses in the world there!!

@kadir1982 Hello, you mentioned that you think that if she faces males on the dirt that she will be beaten, but wasn't the Breeders Cup Classic males racing? Maybe I am wrong but I thought the breeders cup classic had males in the race?

And.....its not like Zenyatta is fast in a traditional way it's just she is very strong minded and wills herself to win ....it's like she is ridding and is connected to another dimension that is above the lower dimension. So Zen.....Buddah. lol

@treysfull I meant to say Rachel will be more fresh, but that could hinder her in some ways, and Zen might be more fit to race, but she didn't get a nice winter break, she hasn't rested in a while. We'll see on race day :D they are both amazing horses.

Funny how Z fans are saying "see you at the Apple B.". But the RA fans say" she ran faster times, if she gets a clean start, match race!" My words " Are you as scared as JJ is?" cuz i would be........BTW "see ya at The Apple Blossom".....i hope

Thanks so much for posting! It's great to have all these races in one vid! She's simply amazing - I can't even count the number of times I've watched her Classic win. She just blows me away.

To the day I die I will never love a horse as much as her, she will give us two beautiful foals, Queen Z's Legacy, and Queen Z's Perfection. I simply adore her and her owners, Michele.

I might be wrong but I believe Ruffian would have make mence meat out of Zenyatta. What does everyone else think. Please don't be 'Bias' but I know some will.(smile). She is a one beautiful horse, so was Ruffian.

@ilovetexasjtr She's been tested and nearly beaten. However, she realized very quickly what was happening and corrected. And that would have resulted in a close contest 2nd. No shame there. But, no. She HAD to nose him.

well tell me. who did Rachel Beat? thats right some 3 yr old colts and some old horses that used to be great. I Still Think Zeny is better. PLUS she was the first FEMALE HORSE EVER to win the Breeders Cup Classic!

Yes they are! Also Zarkava, Europe's HOY last year; Goldikova, two time BC Miler (going for third next year!) and Europe's Champ Older Horse; Vodka, winner of the Japan Derby and the Japan Cup and Japan's reigning HOY!

Losing the Breeders Cup at Churchill was a fluke. 25 lengths back and loses by a nose..Mike Smith's fault. He still is not gotten over that race..nor have i. Check her ears out..not laid back like most horses ears are in full run..hers are pricked forward at finish line..still wanting to run. Never be another filly like her..only Secretariat can keep me more spellbound watching them run.
