Hey guys! Check my description, the zephyr is on CRAZY SALE on "anything in stained glass!" I linked it! Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoyed it!
Whomever complained about long videos is so not into stained glass or just jealous or both or just plain nasty! I love hearing you talk about products and glass projects because your enthusiam is contatious!!!! I thank you for that Mackenzie you helped rekindle my passion for stained glass dear.
I'm so glad you feel inspired!! Nobody complaining, I just feel bad when my videos always end up so long. I'm glad you enjoy the long videos!! Thank you for your support!!
So glad to help! I would say watch both and make that decision on your specific work. I will say personally I am more inclined to suggest the zephyr for cost, part accessibility, ease of use and all the extra bells and whistles it offers.
I ordered that same cutter from AISG and it is VERY comfortable in my hand and doesn’t aggravate my carpal tunnel. I haven’t dared to tempt the oil reservoir yet, and have been sticking to dipping so far. The ring saw is AWESOME…and on my wish list. That’s a SMOKING sale…regularly $454.85, on sale for $309.95. I would jump on that…if I hadn’t already dropped twice that (just with them) recently. I gotta slow my roll….but you GO GIRL!!! I see a Tiffany style lamp in your future. 😁 P.s. it’s not “just a glass cutter”. It’s a game changer for those of us with injuries and arthritis. I LOVE it, and I’m sure you will too.
That's awesome!! With my wrist and hand issues I am really really going to try to switch to pistol grip. I am excited to try it out. Its still locked up in the package until I can get a review up for you guys! I should be filming it this week. Thank you for watching!
Makenzie, you alone have inspired me to start making stained glass! Thank you for all that you share. I was interested in learning more about stained glass, and am so grateful to have found your videos. I know this is something I am going to love doing, and through your videos, I have learned so much! I've slowly been collecting all the necessary tools and supplies to get started. I just scored an incredible deal, from someone local, who was selling their barely used Gryphon convertible grinder. I knew this was the one I wanted, thanks to your video where you review it. A total bonus was that they were also selling their barely used Gryphon ring saw! So I literally just picked them both up yesterday, then tuned into your channel this morning to watch your latest video. And I had no idea you would be reviewing the saw today! Feeling like starting this new art has brought some divine moments, and this was definitely one of them. Now I'm all set to use my ring saw. Thank you!
Looks like an awesome saw, can’t wait to see it in action. I have always liked the pistol grip style cutters as I find them the easiest to use with my arthritis but I have never tried this one. So just ordered one and can’t wait to give it a try. Just starting a new large scale window project so it will get a good work out. Great video as always ❤️
Really wanted to hear the ring saw in action. The Taurus 3 is a noisy beast. The size of the work station is amazing ! Large pieces were though of on this !
You will absolutely be hearing it in the next video testing them out! And yes it is, the noise drives me nuts. One of the many reasons I love gryphon standard grinders. The workspace is HUGE, with the motor set down and away from the grid, it feels huge in comparison. I'll be uploading testing it out soon!
Coincidentally, I just ordered that glass cutter so I’m really psyched to use it when it arrives after seeing it in action. What a great ring saw..Definitely beats the Taurus, but, alas, I’ll have to get over it cuz I just can’t justify two ring saws.
It is fantastic. I was really impressed and have been loving it so far!! Also totally get that and agree. I do only because of this youtube channel. I'm glad you just picked up the cutter, I've been loving that too! Videos of them both in action will be up soon!! Thank you so much for watching!
I cant wait for the comparison of the saws and over time which one you like better! Some years ago I wanted to buy a ring saw from Delphi but couldn't make up my mind because the reviews were so good on the Taurus and not so much on the Zephyr. The Zephyr at that time had more horse power than the Taurus and I was leaning towards getting it but the reviews weren't so good so I never bought a saw. So like I said I cant wait for your reviews on both saws!!!
Oh I can tell you right now! The Zephyr is hands down better. Not even just the machine itself and stopping strength but all of the little extras. Larger overall, larger workspace, it is absolutely quieter, extra parts, larger wheel, clear water line, portable handle and so on. It's no question. Maybe in comparison to the original Zephyr maybe, but those aren't even available anymore so I cant say. But, the current Zephyr vs the Taurus, Zephyr wins.
Fantastic. Love your haul and unboxing videos. Can you live with purple? I bet you can! I certainly could. Looking forward to the pistol grip glass cutter test, I need a new cutter and have been thinking about trying one
With your experience, does the thickness of the blade remove the correct amount of material for lead work. What I mean is if you cut a glass piece is it already set for lead or does it remove too much material and you would need to cut another piece of the exact shape. I really like the look of the same color glass matching between the lead lines.
So I set it to cut exactly where I need it to be. Because it's going to grind a chunk out, just account for that in your stencil on the pieces you know you'll be using a ring saw. Or add that width in after. Does that make sense?
@@MakenzieHallie I use special lead scissors that remove the heart (inside thickness) of the lead came. I was hoping that the ring saw width matched that heart removal size so when you made a single cut, both pieces would work perfectly when putting the lead in-between. And not needing to grind of any more glass. But looking at videos, it looks like the ring blade is thicker than what my scissors remove.
Oh gotcha ok, I didn't know you were asking if it was the same width as shears. It is a bit thicker in my experience. Do they make blades to match that width perfectly....I'm not sure. 🤔 But that would be smart! Lol!
@@MakenzieHallie OK thanks for your insight. I was going to buy one if it eliminated the need to grind off extra material of the matching piece. I guess you would just need to trace the outline the opposing pattern again on the remaining glass and cut another pass as close to the edge. Not sure how close you can cut without break-away. I'd guess a minimum of 1/8". Thanks for the Chapstick tip. That's going to be very helpful for grinding. Keep the videos going you are very good at explaining.
Looking forward to see the saw in action! I've seen so many people using the Taurus 3, but it's sold out almost everywhere in Europe and CRAZY expensive ($830/1000)! This one seems now easier to find and way more affordable!
Holy SH*T. The Taurus is more then the zephyr?! That is nuts. Nevermind $800+. What the fuck. Lol!! Im glad this seems more accessible and more affordable. It's a better buy, by a long shot.
Also, if you ever have issues finding something over there just let me know. I'll do my best to reach out to the companies directly and find a solution.
@@MakenzieHallie Oh yes! Prices for stained glass supplies here are crazy and this is the main reason I still haven't purchased a saw. I feel I should move to US! Anybody wants to adopt me? 🤣
Lmfaooo ughhhh that's awful dude, I'm sorry you have to deal with that. I've heard a few times about glass stores not being a super popular thing, which honestly is everywhere. However, with the huge comeback that stained glass is making, hopefully that will bring back alot of the accessibility that left when the art "died" ten years ago. Glass stores and supplies in general. I think all these companies feel that shift and that's why they are willing to send little old me stuff for free.
@@MakenzieHallie fingers crossed it's going to be easier to find supplies and tools over here too! So far I'm aware of just 3 glass stores in the whole country (Italy) but sometimes I had to purchases online from France, Spain, UK and US
I bought the Zephyr Gryphon ring saw and my pieces always look chipped and when I get to the end of the cut, the blade chips it off. What am I doing wrong here? Thank you for the awesome videos.
Are you speaking about iridescent glass? Or all glass? It shouldnt be beyond standard chipping, like a crazy grit grinder bit or anything. And happy to provide them!! ♡♡
@@MakenzieHallie I practiced with picture frame glass and the pieces turned out so bad. I want to upload a photo but I don’t know how to on this phone.
Ohhhhhhhh ok yea that would be the problem. Picture frame glass is not even the same ball park as cold or fusible glass for stained glass. (Also, we cant attach photos in a comment. Stinks. Lol)
After holding the cutter do you think it would fit someone with almost child sized hands? I've been looking at that same one (almost purely because it's purple lol), but after seeing this and you saying that with your nails it's a perfect fit (your nails are always awesome BTW) I'm worried it might be too big for someone with small hands.
No, should be just like any other pistol grip. If you can hold one your good to go. It's the shape that let's my hand make the grip with nails, not the size. Should be all set! Check Amazon, I believe it's on there, I can't remember if I linked it. That way you can at least immediately return it should it be a problem. Thank you for watching!! 🖤
Just found your channel last night, wish I had found it a year ago. Any issues with the gryphon combination grinder, after seeing your video on it I think I want one, I really like the tilting work surface - would seem you can actually see where your grinding. I used a pencil type cutter for a lot of years and switched to the pistol grip about a year ago, took a little getting use to but I only use the pistol grip now, it's much easier on very old hands. For years I held glass while grinding, but the last couple of years a little "V" would form in each of my thumb nails (a geriatric thing I suppose) so I started using the grinder cookie, which fixed that problem. But I found a tool called Nick’s GRINDER MATE it is fantastic for grinding small pieces, and I find myself using on larger pieces also. Sorry about the long post. Now you have me interested in a ring saw again - looking forward to the next video.
I absolutely love the convertible. I also adore the gryphette so much. Can't go wrong with gryphon in general in my opinion! I actually have the grinder mate and I will be showing it in an upcoming video! I know I should really be using these tools as prevention, before my wrists start getting too bad. Kind of scary when the pain comes at 29 and 4/5 years into glass. I'm glad to hear you have had success converting from the pencil to the pistol, that gives me hope!!! I need to do it. If not for me, for my wrists. 😂
Hi Makenzie, after having the saw for over 9 months do you find it durable and reliable? Have you snapped many blades in that time? I'm looking into purchasing one and getting it shipped to New Zealand and just doing my due diligence. Thanks.
Gm Makenzie...have you ever purchased glass from Anything in Stained Glass??? I just put in an order...their prices are phenomenal...but not sure about s/h charges yet...we'll see...lol
Thanks so much for posting this. Being really new at this, I was wondering it this can replace cutting patterns with a glass cutter....or do both tools have their own little niche in the stained glass world, If so, what would determine when I should use one or the other? Appreciate all your vids. I have learned quite a bit!
Ok so I always get this question and I meant to mention it again in this video and totally forgot. I will in its follow up. But, this piece is simply to cut those very difficult curves and cuts that you physically cannot get otherwise. And that's it. This does not replace a grinder, nor should be used on a daily basis. This is just a tool to cut those random super hard curves and designs.
@@MakenzieHallie Thanks for such a quick answer to my question. This is the second question I've asked and in both cases your response was really quick....which honestly surprised me because i imagine you stay pretty busy. Thanks again for your availability.....
Of coarse! That's what this channel is all about. So we can all share our opinions and experiences. I will always do my best to be here and available to answer them. As will many in the community if they see it! 🖤
LOL!! Grab it if you can! Its definitely affordable, particularly compared to the TOYO! Not going to lie though, that black handled toyo has caught my eye!! lmao!!! shhhhh!!! Ill be testing out the gryphon cutter hopefully on camera this week!
@@MakenzieHallie lol. You can never have too many cutters. I have at least 8 and I use them all. All Toyo. They are great cutters. But I do use them filled. I don't dip. It's all what your comfortable with. But I always will try something new. ☺
100 percent. I don't even use pistol grip what so ever. I use literally any cheap pencil grip from Amazon! But I am going to try and push myself to pistol for the sake of my wrist issues.
