I wish carbon offset companies had the balls to tell the companies deforesting our largest natural forest that their clients are paying to save these trees. I would pay a company to do that.

Amatuer Tip: If I forget my reusable bags at the store I carry everything in my arms or put the unbagged items back in my cart, which is super annoying, but I do this to remember that next time I need to use my bags, sort of a negative reinforcement

I have had my metal bottle for 10 years now. It's dented and the red paint is mostly off . People keep saying I should get a new bottle because this one is ratty looking. So far all the other bottles I have tried just aren't as nice and reliable as this one (I got all of my bottles free and donated or gave away the ones i didn't like). I say that the point of having a reusable bottle is to use it until it is finished, not by how nice it looks. And that is what I am determined to do

Hey 👋 I just wanted you to know that YOU and only YOU were the ONE person who inspired me to live a more zero waste lifestyle. I’m still in my early stages. But I want you to know that I was a person who used styrofoam plates EVERY day, paper towels EVERY day, plastic groceries bags EVERY week. Since subscribing and watching videos you’ve recommended- I haven’t bought or used this for any of those things in MONTHS!!! I now use cloth towels for cleaning and napkins. I use my actual dishes to eat off of. I have several reusable bags now. I buy the bananas that are singled out. I just bought my first box of soap nuts and I plan to have a water filter installed soon so I no longer have to buy a 40 pk of bottled water every two weeks from Costco. All that to say you have definitely made an impact on this wife and mama of 3 school aged kids to live a more zero waste lifestyle. I will continue to progress in this and tell people about your channel so they can make a difference too!

I 10000% understand what it feels like to be the outcast and the “weird environmental freak” sometimes it feels really bad to be the one that is “frowned upon” but now I don’t let it get to me. I am 16 years old and I have already done so much to make change and you have had a huge influence on me throughout this journey. I am the president of an environmental club and I do my best to educate students and teachers about current situations. I have a petition going around to ban styrofoam lunch trays in my school district and NPR wants to interview me! I got into contact with the Secretary of state’s Secretary and she said it could even be a STATE-wide ban. I have TONSS of kids trying to bring me down by saying I won’t do anything and nothing is going to change, but I have HUNDREDS of supporters. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me on this journey. You may not know it, but you have definitely convinced WAY more than 201k people. As an Italian living abroad the bidet is such a delicate subject.. kinda felt lost when I realised I wasn't going to find it anywhere.. I miss it so much! 😂 My trick rn is always trying to rent a house where the toilet bowl is just next to the shower/bath so I can grab the diffuser and use it right on the bowl... Which means I don't even have to flush the water sometimes.

I honestly love that you show us the plastic sundries in your house. So many zero-waste influencers either hide these or have definitely thrown them all out and replaced them with brand-new glass and metal pieces just for the ~aesthetic. It's so unrealistic in any other scenario. People in their mid-20s and older don't have magically plastic-free lives and houses before starting their sustainable journey. The fact that you show us how you genuinely re-use these things and do your best with what you have is real-deal sustainability.

I remember being a kid and getting yelled at for trying to recycle because my dad was worried about bugs getting in the recycling. I also remember being in college and trying to start an environmental group and only having 2 people who would support it but would take recycling myself to the local recycling plant every other week. Now I have found a partner who supports me and all my crazy environmentally friendly ideas. It takes time and it's an uphill battle, however each time that I go outside in the spring and hear birds sing with green grass and clear skies I know it's all worth it. Keep doing what you are doing. We got you

Both your dad and you're right. Uncleaned recycling will attract bugs. You need to clean out the food residue before recycling it. Your dad was wrong for not explaining this to you. That's why China doesn't want it. On the flip side my province still has buyers in China because its already pre cleaned and in most cases its been processed into plastic pellets

My journey to less waste started when my daughter was born, I started sewing cloth diapers to save money, but out of that was born also access to knowledge about the environment. Around the same time I think my grandma gave me a magazine that just happened to feature Bea Johnson and a section on zero waste home. I was amazed, and quickly became enthralled with doing everything I could to reduce my family's waste. I was composting, sewing diy bulk bags, made menstrual pads, got straws, made beeswax wraps, etc. I did a ton of diy cleaning and beauty products, and I loved it! But then life happened and I had my second son born with a congenital heart disease. Every day was more than I could bear, my family separated, I was back and forth from the hospital, we lived in survival mode, we were transferred to Chicago for him to get a transplant and we ended up loosing him. It took me a long long time to get out of survival mode, and right now we've had another son, so we are a family of 4 on one income. I am just now (6 years after the loss of my son) getting back into my zero waste habits, and while I kept up with a lot of them, I have also made some other wasteful choices that I know I need to do better with. You're the reason I am able to get moving again on zero waste, it was really hard for me to do before and I think you have a good level headed view of saying do the best you can and it's ok to not be there yet, just keep moving forward and making better choices. I started at a sprinters pace with zero waste, but now I feel like I'm settling in for the marathon. Thanks for caring and inspiring! Much love!

I started watching your videos a long time ago and thought you were weird. I was shocked by a lot, and felt very inadequate in my own journey, making me choose to have an unsavory opinion of you, which wasn't fair. I just subscribed because, well, I've grown. You helped me see all the ways I can be doing better. Like mentioning not cutting through grass, which I've now stopped doing. And I just wanted to say that i am so thankful that you were weird and stood out from the crowd and followed your heart. What you are doing is so important and I'm so glad you stuck with it and I'm inspired to be weird, too.

Alright so hear me out! My husband and I started the Dave Ramsey budgeting system (it’s pretty popular in churches, if you’re familiar... this is beside the point), and I’ve found that when trying to save money, I’m much more conscious about sustainability. So many of these things not only conserve water or other resources, but they conserve money as well! A water bottle may be more up front, but it’s a one-time purchase. Sustainable clothing may cost more up front, but it’s better quality and lasts for years if you take care of it. I truly believe that if people realized how much money they were throwing away with consumerism, more people would be implementing many of these swaps. Off my soap box now... carry on... 🌻

It is true. I invested maybe 100 dollars or a bit more for zero waste period products. I no longer need any disposables in that department. Before I would spend 18-32 dollars per cycle. I have been zero waste for 2 years. So multiply by 24 months. I am saving so much money.

First off. Don’t apologize for crying cuz I’m right there with you. 😭 Second. My husband and I used a bidet for two weeks while in japan last year. Omg it was life changing. We fell in love and hope to have them at home one day. Third. Could you ever maybe do a video on how to approach your job about making greener changes? I work at a good sized corporate office for a well known company and even though they recently made a few “green swaps” last year (they changed from plastic coffee stirs to wood) I feel like they could maybe do more. I’m not exactly sure with what or how to approach it though. 😕

I find that if you do the leg work for them people are often more open to your ideas. In the UK you have to pay for a recycling service for businesses, so what's your local cheapest one? The main waste an office produces is paper, your office should have a shredding pile bc of GDPR laws (if in europe), see if you can have an extra bag added for general paper waste and plonked somewhere obvious. Don't be afraid to phone up for a quote (in the UK it was like £6 per big bag of waste) and get the numbers togethee. Then, grab whoever would have to organise it I.e. the person on the front desk/the one who runs the office happenings etc. And be like "how much of a pain in the arse will this be for you? How can I help out?" Bc it's all very well and good having the big boss on side, but the person who has to do it won't appreciate being given an extra task. Then, pitch it to the big boss. It'll cost X amount for the company, but it'll make much more of an impact to Y, and you can link it into Z company values. (Big Bosses are supposed to believe in corporate BS). If they want extra funding, do a bake sale or something. A lot of people are concerned with the planet and totally overwhelmed with how to fix it so don't bother, but if you give them a plan then they can go yes/no/yes but can we do this instead? The only thing you have to lose is time, you got this, I believe in you! ❤

Hey, Shelbi! More of a silent viewer, I have commented here only once before. I just wanted to say that you are amazing. Your vibe, efforts, passion and information are magnificent. I had been eco-conscious and making an effort for many years with many things. However, when I got into RU-vid and, subsequently, found you, you inspired me even more with your passion. Having grown up in India, I have seen the boom in disposables' use there, some of which could still be avoided. The information and the awareness you generated strengthened my beliefs, made me more aware, motivated me even more and made me look for ways that I could do more. Since migrating to Canada your tips have helped even more! And you make it feel as though we are not alone! And so much kudos to you for turning me to bunz! It has been so much help here. The information and the awareness gained through you has been abundant. Your videos (everything that's you in there) (with bonus guest Madison!) are always a gift. P.S. Water was the norm in India. I used a bidet with maybe a square or two to dry. Here, in a rented place, there's no bidet (Boo!) but I still use water and a bit of toilet paper to dry off. P.P.S. While using bunz here, one of the first bunz that I met turned out to be a follower of yours well! Coincidence or what! P.P.S. If you ever come to Toronto, I would absolutely love to meet you! You are a star indeed.

I live in Washington state and I happened to be at this store called Safeway. I saw an employee chopping up perfectly looking floral bouquets. I got closer to see what she was doing or try to understand why. Another employee asked her why she was chopping them up and she said the bouquets were old and she didn’t want the homeless to dumpster dive and sell them to people. It hurt my heart because I think people should be allowed to resell something from the dumpster. If they do this to flowers, now imagine what they do to food. Sad.

No Shelby, thank you! I started my journey several years ago when I was in high school and didn't work back then, so I had no money to buy the swaps I needed. I had to ask my parents to do so for me, and they never understood so they never did. So I had to ask for things like a bamboo toothbrush for my birthday. Back then I also talked about the importance of these types of topics with my friends, but they also didn't ever do a thing about it. There are no thrift shops were I live, just some flea markets that are around a certain day a week. Zero waste shops are a new thing in my city (they've been for just about two years tops), and there's only 4 right now, and they just have the basics. Lush is also new here, it's been for 11 months now (used to work there). So, what I'm trying to say is: I always felt weird being so invested in these topics and having no support, but several years ago I found your channel and felt at home. I love how you make people interested in this and are still flexible about it, unlike others who make it seem you have to be literally 'zero waste'. Cups can be intimidating, especially if you haven't even used tampons before like me. They take some getting used to for sure. At some point you just have to say "I paid money for this, I am going to use it!" and follow the care instructions and just try it out. I promise they don't bite, the main thing is to make sure you've broken suction by pinching before removing. Inserting gets easier with practice, and since you have reusable pads you can use them in conjunction until you are confident that you only need one or the other. I hope you give it a try!

Don't be afraid to cry about things your passionate about. :)

Your passion and emotion at the end are beautiful and honestly inspiring. To 200k more! And how you didn't put a certain price but saved up your own money so you can give the winners something they actually need is just adorable. You are an amazing human being❤

Just for the peeps that don’t live in a state that has a plastic bag ban... some grocery stores will give you ten cents back for every bag you bring in. Maybe just a little incentive to remember 🤷🏽‍♀️🌱

Yes. WinCo did this in California before the bag ban. I bet they do it elsewhere.

My state was all set for a bag ban, and then they banned the ban! Grrrr

I dont think canada does that ut that's a great incentive. One of our grocery stores will either give you the money off your bill (5cents per bag I believe) or they donate that money to the local food bank. Which 99.9% of people usually do. So that's cool.

Thank you so much for sharing about carbon neutrality!!! I had actually never heard of that before but pretty much every zero waste product I’d need, needed to be shipped to me and I was very concerned about the shipping emission or whatever. I’m gonna try it out thank you so much!!!

The phrase that I come back to again and again is, "The perfect is the enemy of the good." Too often I run into frustration that I can never seem to do enough. I forget my bags half the time... Well, half the time I remember them. It seems like when I remember my bags, I don't have as many as I need... Yeah, but, every bag that I have is one less single use bag in my life... Progress is an iterative process. If you take half a step backwards for every step forwards, you are still getting somewhere. Be proud of your accomplishments, no matter how small, and try to build on them over time. You can't do that if you are too busy with self-flagellation to even see that we live in an imperfect world and each of us can only do our best.

From Sydney, Australia. Started watching your vids yesterday whilst in self isolation. Ive been leading a low-waste low-plastic life since August 2019. Just wanna say you're bloody unreal and you're doing a ripper job, mate. I'm not anti-plastic but I am against the misuse and abuse of plastic. You did a video on using up what you have already and I agree with you. Some people don't understand that using the plastic you already have at home and keeping it out of the recycling and the landfill bin is really important. I'll clean and reuse plastic Mount Franklin bottles at home (some I've had for over 2 years) and I feel particularly in the medical industry plastic is a better option. I still use my plastic Chinese takeaway containers 15years later. When swapping stuff out it's a great idea to use what you have already. Congrats on your subscription numbers. You are making a difference.

It’s raining here today… I’m on school holidays (summer in Australia), perfect plan for today is to work my way through these videos. I was very very heavily into zero waste and veganism a few years ago and completely burned myself out. I want to get back to some level of balance with it as we have gone so far in the other direction. I love the work that you’re doing. I realise that now my kids are unsure about which package goes into which bin is not ok… but also me freaking out about them buying a drink in a plastic bottle when we were out together as a family was also not ok. Thank you for providing balanced advice. Also.. I LOVED that you cried… it brought me back!

I'm no where near where I want to be with being more eco friendly just because I cant afford it yet, but this video is really inspiring me to try to slowly swap out my products, which would be easier for me to try to ease into than all at once

I have learned so much from you and have been slowly making changes to reduce my waste, it's been a long journey but your videos are so helpful in all the ideas you have and the fact that you've done so much research, and in keeping me motivated when the rest of the people in my life aren't very conscious about this. I don't feel as isolated. You are definitely making a difference. Thank you.

You made a difference to me. I pretty much quote you everyday. I am making swaps one at a time and encouraging those around me to do the same. Still everyone points out what I’m not doing right.... but I can’t do all good the world , but the world needs all the good I can do.

An intermediate for clothes is finding a store that buys "off" or out of season clothing from retailers for dirt cheap thatd otherwise be thrown away. In WV we have Gabes, but ask around in local FB groups and you'll find one! I just got $65 retail Lane Bryant pants for $10 BECAUSE THE POCKET WAS STITCHED SHUT! So I just seemed ripped it open (retailers do this for transit to keep pockets flat but they get opened at distribution centers, some are missed though).

I love Gabe's!!! Regardless of the more eco-friendly aspect, I've found really amazing quality brands for soooo cheap. My husband finds cheap Carhartt clothing all the time, and I just got a pair of Lucky brand jeans for 19 bucks.

Hey, You are not a weirdo. People who are not thinking about earth are selfish people. I want to say I love you. Thank you so much for bringing such beautiful content. I am using most of your tips : for swapping eco friendly laundry, grocery shopping. The list is just on. I am sure a lot of us value your thoughts and not a lot of people can openly talk about it and own their lifestyle. Lastly, I love you gurl and happy new year :)
