I wish carbon offset companies had the balls to tell the companies deforesting our largest natural forest that their clients are paying to save these trees. I would pay a company to do that.
Amatuer Tip: If I forget my reusable bags at the store I carry everything in my arms or put the unbagged items back in my cart, which is super annoying, but I do this to remember that next time I need to use my bags, sort of a negative reinforcement
Hannah Raymond - I keep my reusable bags in my car for this purpose! If I forget to bring them in the store, I can just put them in the bags once I get to my car so I can still easily carry them in the house!
I have done this when ive forgotten mine! Usually keep them in my car but have on occasion not had them in there. Super annoying but definitely reinforces the need for our bags :) xxx
I have had my metal bottle for 10 years now. It's dented and the red paint is mostly off . People keep saying I should get a new bottle because this one is ratty looking. So far all the other bottles I have tried just aren't as nice and reliable as this one (I got all of my bottles free and donated or gave away the ones i didn't like). I say that the point of having a reusable bottle is to use it until it is finished, not by how nice it looks. And that is what I am determined to do
I have several reusable bottles--2 that I keep in my office, and 2 at home. I like my water to be ice cold so I have one in a fridge at all times chilling.
We use a sprayer like would be in a kitchen that is connected into our hot and cold water lines in the bathroom and wash with soap when we need to and use a toilet paper holder stand to hold washcloths that we use to dry off.
Hey 👋 I just wanted you to know that YOU and only YOU were the ONE person who inspired me to live a more zero waste lifestyle. I’m still in my early stages. But I want you to know that I was a person who used styrofoam plates EVERY day, paper towels EVERY day, plastic groceries bags EVERY week. Since subscribing and watching videos you’ve recommended- I haven’t bought or used this for any of those things in MONTHS!!! I now use cloth towels for cleaning and napkins. I use my actual dishes to eat off of. I have several reusable bags now. I buy the bananas that are singled out. I just bought my first box of soap nuts and I plan to have a water filter installed soon so I no longer have to buy a 40 pk of bottled water every two weeks from Costco. All that to say you have definitely made an impact on this wife and mama of 3 school aged kids to live a more zero waste lifestyle. I will continue to progress in this and tell people about your channel so they can make a difference too!
Sabrina Cepeda I couldn’t have said it better myself! I was in a similar mindset before finding shelbi and now I’m obsessed with reducing my waste down to nothing. I even work part time at my local zero waste store that’s up-and-coming! It’s so amazing to see and I can’t even explain HOW MUCH better Shelbi has made my life. We love you Shelbi ❤️
I 10000% understand what it feels like to be the outcast and the “weird environmental freak” sometimes it feels really bad to be the one that is “frowned upon” but now I don’t let it get to me. I am 16 years old and I have already done so much to make change and you have had a huge influence on me throughout this journey. I am the president of an environmental club and I do my best to educate students and teachers about current situations. I have a petition going around to ban styrofoam lunch trays in my school district and NPR wants to interview me! I got into contact with the Secretary of state’s Secretary and she said it could even be a STATE-wide ban. I have TONSS of kids trying to bring me down by saying I won’t do anything and nothing is going to change, but I have HUNDREDS of supporters. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me on this journey. You may not know it, but you have definitely convinced WAY more than 201k people. I just want to give you a big long hug even though we live hundreds of miles away from each other.
Keep up the great work! You sound like an amazing, strong, informed person💪. Who says one person can't change the world. Look at Greta!! If we all tried to change our destructive habits just a little bit, think of the overall good it could do. Please keep educating those around you 💕💕
As an Italian living abroad the bidet is such a delicate subject.. kinda felt lost when I realised I wasn't going to find it anywhere.. I miss it so much! 😂 My trick rn is always trying to rent a house where the toilet bowl is just next to the shower/bath so I can grab the diffuser and use it right on the bowl... Which means I don't even have to flush the water sometimes.
At my school, we have a club that talks about the environment and what we can do. We actually helped our school restart their recycling program because the custodians couldn't collect the recycling cans, we did. I am new to the zero waste scene and have been slowly transitioning and using up old products. My mom and I have switched to reusable pads and I love it!
That's so cool! We have a recycling club at school (sadly we cant do it this year due to the pandemic) but we always talk about the environment and stuff with the science teacher who runs the club. It's so cool to see other people be as passionate about it as me lol
I honestly love that you show us the plastic sundries in your house. So many zero-waste influencers either hide these or have definitely thrown them all out and replaced them with brand-new glass and metal pieces just for the ~aesthetic. It's so unrealistic in any other scenario. People in their mid-20s and older don't have magically plastic-free lives and houses before starting their sustainable journey. The fact that you show us how you genuinely re-use these things and do your best with what you have is real-deal sustainability.
I remember being a kid and getting yelled at for trying to recycle because my dad was worried about bugs getting in the recycling. I also remember being in college and trying to start an environmental group and only having 2 people who would support it but would take recycling myself to the local recycling plant every other week. Now I have found a partner who supports me and all my crazy environmentally friendly ideas. It takes time and it's an uphill battle, however each time that I go outside in the spring and hear birds sing with green grass and clear skies I know it's all worth it. Keep doing what you are doing. We got you
Both your dad and you're right. Uncleaned recycling will attract bugs. You need to clean out the food residue before recycling it. Your dad was wrong for not explaining this to you. That's why China doesn't want it. On the flip side my province still has buyers in China because its already pre cleaned and in most cases its been processed into plastic pellets
I feel you. My dad yelled at me once a for trying to donate a few cans of food out of our pantry to a school food drive. We were not poor or struggling and it was only like 3 cans of food that had been sitting there forever that I know we weren’t gonna use. Parents suck.
Ludovica Tirone disgusting. Go to Venezuela if you want socialism. I’m sure you’d just love it there like all the other infuriated citizens protesting their corrupt socialist government. CAPITALISM RULES
@@audreygregory672 if you like capitalism go to (or stay in) the USA. Im sure you'll love it just as much aa all the people dying in the streets and the college students who can't graduate because they have food debt.
My journey to less waste started when my daughter was born, I started sewing cloth diapers to save money, but out of that was born also access to knowledge about the environment. Around the same time I think my grandma gave me a magazine that just happened to feature Bea Johnson and a section on zero waste home. I was amazed, and quickly became enthralled with doing everything I could to reduce my family's waste. I was composting, sewing diy bulk bags, made menstrual pads, got straws, made beeswax wraps, etc. I did a ton of diy cleaning and beauty products, and I loved it! But then life happened and I had my second son born with a congenital heart disease. Every day was more than I could bear, my family separated, I was back and forth from the hospital, we lived in survival mode, we were transferred to Chicago for him to get a transplant and we ended up loosing him. It took me a long long time to get out of survival mode, and right now we've had another son, so we are a family of 4 on one income. I am just now (6 years after the loss of my son) getting back into my zero waste habits, and while I kept up with a lot of them, I have also made some other wasteful choices that I know I need to do better with. You're the reason I am able to get moving again on zero waste, it was really hard for me to do before and I think you have a good level headed view of saying do the best you can and it's ok to not be there yet, just keep moving forward and making better choices. I started at a sprinters pace with zero waste, but now I feel like I'm settling in for the marathon. Thanks for caring and inspiring! Much love!
Your story moved me deeply. It's humbling to know that everything is a choice, and you're choosing to try and do things right. Thank you for sharing and thank you for keep trying
Lise Christensen my heart hurts for you, but it loves you too. Keep striving for the best and may your baby boy Rest In Peace and may you live a beautiful life. I wish nothing but the best 💖
I started watching your videos a long time ago and thought you were weird. I was shocked by a lot, and felt very inadequate in my own journey, making me choose to have an unsavory opinion of you, which wasn't fair. I just subscribed because, well, I've grown. You helped me see all the ways I can be doing better. Like mentioning not cutting through grass, which I've now stopped doing. And I just wanted to say that i am so thankful that you were weird and stood out from the crowd and followed your heart. What you are doing is so important and I'm so glad you stuck with it and I'm inspired to be weird, too.
Alright so hear me out! My husband and I started the Dave Ramsey budgeting system (it’s pretty popular in churches, if you’re familiar... this is beside the point), and I’ve found that when trying to save money, I’m much more conscious about sustainability. So many of these things not only conserve water or other resources, but they conserve money as well! A water bottle may be more up front, but it’s a one-time purchase. Sustainable clothing may cost more up front, but it’s better quality and lasts for years if you take care of it. I truly believe that if people realized how much money they were throwing away with consumerism, more people would be implementing many of these swaps. Off my soap box now... carry on... 🌻
It is true. I invested maybe 100 dollars or a bit more for zero waste period products. I no longer need any disposables in that department. Before I would spend 18-32 dollars per cycle. I have been zero waste for 2 years. So multiply by 24 months. I am saving so much money.
aberdeen lol we got our program for free. I know there are many churches that help with the cost of the class, and there are free podcasts as well. I wish it was free too, but nothing good ever comes for free, they say! 😂
My dad has always told me "if it matters buy it once and buy it right" in the end it saves me money. I also enjoy the research cause it makes me love my purchase even more. I also now love thrift stores, you can find anything there!
First off. Don’t apologize for crying cuz I’m right there with you. 😭 Second. My husband and I used a bidet for two weeks while in japan last year. Omg it was life changing. We fell in love and hope to have them at home one day. Third. Could you ever maybe do a video on how to approach your job about making greener changes? I work at a good sized corporate office for a well known company and even though they recently made a few “green swaps” last year (they changed from plastic coffee stirs to wood) I feel like they could maybe do more. I’m not exactly sure with what or how to approach it though. 😕
I find that if you do the leg work for them people are often more open to your ideas. In the UK you have to pay for a recycling service for businesses, so what's your local cheapest one? The main waste an office produces is paper, your office should have a shredding pile bc of GDPR laws (if in europe), see if you can have an extra bag added for general paper waste and plonked somewhere obvious. Don't be afraid to phone up for a quote (in the UK it was like £6 per big bag of waste) and get the numbers togethee. Then, grab whoever would have to organise it I.e. the person on the front desk/the one who runs the office happenings etc. And be like "how much of a pain in the arse will this be for you? How can I help out?" Bc it's all very well and good having the big boss on side, but the person who has to do it won't appreciate being given an extra task. Then, pitch it to the big boss. It'll cost X amount for the company, but it'll make much more of an impact to Y, and you can link it into Z company values. (Big Bosses are supposed to believe in corporate BS). If they want extra funding, do a bake sale or something. A lot of people are concerned with the planet and totally overwhelmed with how to fix it so don't bother, but if you give them a plan then they can go yes/no/yes but can we do this instead? The only thing you have to lose is time, you got this, I believe in you! ❤
Would definitely like a video on the third! My job recently switched from plastic cutlery that came in a box to plastic cutlery that comes INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED in plastic. It drives me up the wall and I wish there was something I could do about it because I watch people in the break room every day throwing away so much plastic
You have to get the numbers on how much $$$ they'll save and how they can promote their business is going green. Businesses care about 2 things, image and money. You have to find the cheapest eco friendly resources that will not only be cheaper to buy but cost cheaper to implement.
I love how you talked about reusable bags because while watching your video I finished sewing and making 3 reusable bags made from my dogs food bags 😁😋
Even more beginner than thrifting: shopping at resale shops like plato’s closet or other places that actually pick through the items and choose things that are good quality and usually “in style.” They often sort things by the type of item and size and sometimes even the color too. Way less intimidating for beginners especially of the younger age.
yes! but not tj maxx/marshall’s because they are clothes made in excess to be sold, so they aren’t used and companies rely on them supporting their excess
I have trouble with those stores because they don't carry enough stuff in xl which I think is crazy because that's not even true plus size (which they should also carry more of)
Girl, i was also that weird girl in high school who cared about the environment. I just want to say I’m so proud of you!! Please keep changing the world! Also thanks to you I just started offsetting my emissions, you really do make a difference! ❤️
ForTheLoveOfLike so true. I’m teaching everything I’m learning to my husband, my daughter, my son, and all my friends and family. 1 subscriber here and I’m continuing this influence to countless others and singing Shelbis praises to anyone who will listen.
Soooo true! My influence on my family, kids, spouse, parents, friends & coworkers is really more than had imagined it would be. It’s like they knew they could be doing better and needed to be validated to make the move to more sustainable choices!
When I found out about reusable pads for some reason I got a strange urge to start making some and I’ve made at least seven all together of liners and pads
@@sophiepoyser4731 for make it using? I'd start with panty liners from fabrics around your house. Old sheets or clothes. Flannel is a great fabric for all stages of pad making.
Sophie Poyser what I did was I looked up a bunch of videos and use what you have because using what You have doesn’t cause any pressure and had to start out with and lots of videos because I had no clue what they even where when I started and they should show you all you’ll need to gather up and then slowly follow them on making what you’ll need
Beginners: learn how to sew/repare your clothes! Altering clothes from the thrift store/something that doesn't fit you anymore can be quite easy :) Or use the old fabric to make new things from! Advanced/rich: IDK, check out if there are any low/zero waste taylors near you :) And have all the clothes taylored for you :p
As someone who is allergic to nuts I was concerned about Eco Nuts so I did a bit of research and they are actually a type of berry and are nut allergy free, so if you’re allergic to nuts, you don’t have to worry about people walking around covered in nuts.
Imagine if just every subscriber used Ecosia, Imagine if we all recycled one more plastic bottle. Imagine if we all gave away 10 unwanted items. Imagine if we all planted one bee friendly plant in our yards/gardens. Imagine we all switched our electricity providers to renewable energy providers. The power of 200K , wouldn’t it be cool if we all took #Shelbizel200KChallenge . What else could we add as a challenge that could be significant ??
Great idea. I’ve recently switched to 100% renewable energy provider. I think the previous was something like 80-% or something but still it all makes a difference.
Hey, Shelbi! More of a silent viewer, I have commented here only once before. I just wanted to say that you are amazing. Your vibe, efforts, passion and information are magnificent. I had been eco-conscious and making an effort for many years with many things. However, when I got into RU-vid and, subsequently, found you, you inspired me even more with your passion. Having grown up in India, I have seen the boom in disposables' use there, some of which could still be avoided. The information and the awareness you generated strengthened my beliefs, made me more aware, motivated me even more and made me look for ways that I could do more. Since migrating to Canada your tips have helped even more! And you make it feel as though we are not alone! And so much kudos to you for turning me to bunz! It has been so much help here. The information and the awareness gained through you has been abundant. Your videos (everything that's you in there) (with bonus guest Madison!) are always a gift. P.S. Water was the norm in India. I used a bidet with maybe a square or two to dry. Here, in a rented place, there's no bidet (Boo!) but I still use water and a bit of toilet paper to dry off. P.P.S. While using bunz here, one of the first bunz that I met turned out to be a follower of yours well! Coincidence or what! P.P.S. If you ever come to Toronto, I would absolutely love to meet you! You are a star indeed.
At target the other day, I thought it would be more an impact if they told people they were spending 5 cents per bag instead of taking 5 cents off for reusable bags
we’ve had this in place in the UK for plastic bags since 2017 i believe, and more and more stores are charging for paper bags too! it makes me happy to see people carrying reusable bags and storage to different shops
Yes! The first time I seen this actually implemented was during my travels in Norway in 2011, and I couldn't wait for the US to get on board. Sounds like we're making pretty good progress!
My store charges so much for paper bags for some reason, 50c for plastic and r4 for paper (im in Cape Town) which is so bizarre to me since the impact of a plastic bag is so much more than paper! And yet the plastic bags are cheap
As a trans man who's pre-T I still bleed, and having a cup keeps me from having to use products that are one wasteful and two makes me a lot less dysphoric
Seeing you get emotional in towards the end 🥺😭 I feel the struggle of being the weird one in the friend group too. I'm so glad that one of us weirdos is succeeding, so very proud of you ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
I absolutely relate to being known as the "weird one" growing up! The first time I watched one of your videos I loved how real you were. No soft- spoken, hippy dippy crap! Just real concern and love for our world! Congrats on your milestone!
This is actually something that'd really bothered me about some sustainable products. They make it seem like you need to have all these specialized products (like "unpaper towels") when all you really need are multipurpose items like a basic towel.
This channel is SOOOO Important! Not only this video, but those of the past, have taught me such simple things I can do that I can do that DO NOT involve a new purchase just increase personal awareness!! And I love it!! Thank you Shelby! You are making a difference and helping us to make a difference as well!!!!
I started using a bidet a couple months ago. Still figuring out the angles and pressure lol But I do end up using a lot less toilet paper using the bidet.
Here in Finland bidet is a standard equipment on every wc, also public ones, so it's always weird to hear someone "started using bidet" (also the fear of not having bidet abroad is one reason I don't prefer travelling). Good for you tho! :)
We switched to small colorful rags and a container on the top of the toilet for them to go in. It feels so much better than paper. I'm spoiled now days lol
Congrats on 200,000 babes! You made me cry with you 😭 you make it so that living an eco-friendly lifestyle can be accessible to EVERYONE. You lead by example and allow a way for others to do the same. I have always been the weird one too, but now, my family and my boyfriend slowly make changes in their lifestyle for a healthier planet. I used to feel defeated/overwhelmed with eco anxiety, but now I find peace in knowing the world needs all the good that I can do. Thank you for being you, youre my hero ❤️
Ooooy the grocery bags. I’ve just accepted that I will forever bag my groceries in the parking lot as I never remember to take the bags out of my trunk.
Your sign off statement is a favorite! Your videos started my push from beginner swaps toward advanced in the past couple months. Thank you for all the passion you put into your work.
Not 100% true.depends on where your food comes from and what you are getting. For example a gallon of milk from a local farm that has grass fed cows is better then avacodes.
@@starandfox601 I don't put avocados in my cereals or coffee though.... please don't compare totally unrelated things! that's incredibly stupid!!! compare oat milk to the milk you buy. compare veggie spreads you can put on bread to cheese and meat. compare chili con carne to chili son carne. and as a little side note: a lot of vegans don't buy avocados because of the issues. roughly 99% of avocados are eaten by non-vegans.
@@BlondeQtie Thats not stupid. This person doesnt buy avocados to do something. Thats good, u dont have to be a 100% eco friendly. Then u would have to live in the woods and u are not doing that so shut up.
LyeHD How stupid are you?? It‘s WAY BETTER than to live 70% or 90% eco friendly than to live 20% eco friendly. You can improve all the time and it’s always better to improve and explore new solutions. Don’t stand still, DEVELOP! You are not a stone, you are a living human being with a brain and the ability to do BETTER!
Thank you so much for all you do!! I am 13 years old and working to get my house more zero waste! While I watch all kinds of zero waste videos and channels yours is by far my favorite!!
Tip for grocery bags, I have them hanging above where I have my shoes. I put the "pretty" bags in the front so it looks a bit more artistic. I used to forget my bags almost every time. Since I swapped where they were, I've never forgotten them. FIND WHAT WORKS SO IT'S EASY TO NOT FORGET.
I continue to be the "weird" one in the friend group! This is my first video of yours that I'm watching and it's refreshing to see that there are other people out there who do continue to care about the world. I currently use conventional toilet paper, because I live with my family and they don't care to use anything else. Once I move out, after the pandemic, I will be getting a bidet and eventually using flannel squares as my toilet paper!
Second this. I’ve been using them for about 2 years and I accidentally trained myself to become more attuned with my body to the point where I can now make it in time to bleed into the toilet instead of my pad because I got tired of trying to get all the blood out of the cloth 😂
@@wtkwtf I can't say for sure. Some people say yes. Many companies offer cloth pads with waterproof linings on the underwear side. And optional inserts that you could possibly double (triple?) up on. You still might need to change it often. Maybe look into it, if you're interested. Two companies I use are Gladrags and Party In My Pants Pads. If you're crafty, you can find patterns for sewing your own online and that would be a way to make them as absorbent and waterproof as you like. 🤷♀️ Good luck in your research.
I live in Washington state and I happened to be at this store called Safeway. I saw an employee chopping up perfectly looking floral bouquets. I got closer to see what she was doing or try to understand why. Another employee asked her why she was chopping them up and she said the bouquets were old and she didn’t want the homeless to dumpster dive and sell them to people. It hurt my heart because I think people should be allowed to resell something from the dumpster. If they do this to flowers, now imagine what they do to food. Sad.
I've heard (don't know the accuracy) some stores poison the food they throw out to keep people from dumpster diving. It's disgustingly sad that this is the world we live in. :-(
Gymboree does this. I remember seeing my old manager cut up “damaged” clothing mostly from returns and i asked my manager why would she cut clothing instead of donating? That’s the policy for some reason to cut things up so ppl don’t dumpster dive and resell.
It’s a store policy :/ when I worked at a major supermarket we were limited on what we could donate to the food bank every morning. The rest would get thrown into a trash compactor to avoid dumpster divers. And old produced in its own trash cans that were double locked.
You’re the only sustainable living channel I’ve ever subscribed to. I like how you make the lifestyle approachable. It doesn’t feel like there is a right a passage or that you have redo your whole life in order to get started. Congrats on 200k
Thank you for sticking to your values! I still feel a bit awkward with my eco friendly habits around others so it’s really reassuring that there are people on the same journey💝
I love my diva cup, I’ve been using it for at least 8 years and had no clue it was considered an eco friendly swap 😅 But I recently found out that if you add about 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide when washing period panties, it gets all of the stains out!
No Shelby, thank you! I started my journey several years ago when I was in high school and didn't work back then, so I had no money to buy the swaps I needed. I had to ask my parents to do so for me, and they never understood so they never did. So I had to ask for things like a bamboo toothbrush for my birthday. Back then I also talked about the importance of these types of topics with my friends, but they also didn't ever do a thing about it. There are no thrift shops were I live, just some flea markets that are around a certain day a week. Zero waste shops are a new thing in my city (they've been for just about two years tops), and there's only 4 right now, and they just have the basics. Lush is also new here, it's been for 11 months now (used to work there). So, what I'm trying to say is: I always felt weird being so invested in these topics and having no support, but several years ago I found your channel and felt at home. I love how you make people interested in this and are still flexible about it, unlike others who make it seem you have to be literally 'zero waste'. So, thank you, for making me feel like I'm actually contributing and making me feel heard. Much love xx.
I just want to say that you have made such an impact on my life. I have learned to view the way I shop and consume differently. I look at labels, question if I need something, rarely buy anything clothing new, and make my cleaning solution from your recipes. Thank you for being such an amazing inspiration.
Seeing how emotional you got over this makes me want to watch you more often. I mean, I've been watching you from the beginning and I've been aware of my waste for years but I just enjoy your videos and your drive. Get it girl!
Oh my gosh I felt your emotions so much at the end I can understand how it just makes you so happy that people are starting to understand. In the last past two years I’ve been on this journey of doing more minimalism then trying to be more nicer to the environment it really helps me in my day-to-day life minimalism makes me feel free Last past two years or so now when I clean my home honestly I do vinegar and a little bit of soap hot hot water and it goes a long way makes everything sparkle make sure everything so clean and I don’t have to worry about headaches I don’t have to worry about funky chemicals just feels fresh and clean .
I swapped to reusable pads I got off Etsy a few months ago and I LOVE them. I haven't had to buy tampons since, and they're comfortable and easy to clean.
And a lot of us watch your videos multiple times too. I know I do. It helps me a lot. I’m healing from a compulsive shopping disorder and watching your videos reminds me why I’m on my no buy journey.
I've watched a few of your videos and enjoyed them but when you cried actual tears because of the planet, I had to subscribe. I love what you're doing and think it is so important and awesome. Don't apologize for crying. It means you care. Thank you for all you do; it does have a big impact.
I’m a the very start of my journey and I love all these swap ideas! Thank you for your channel and for making such a huge difference in our lives and lifestyle choices!
I would love a Tushy bidet! I’ve been interested in a bidet for a while now and I like the Tushy brand because they’re more eco friendly than others!:) Congrats on 200k Shelbi! You deserve it💕
For a cleaning product, I mix water, vinegar and a few drops of dish dawn soap. I’ve been doing it for years to clean everything. And look at you go! You’ve gained 70k subscribers in just 10 months.
I’m going to try out imperfect foods! I’ve mastered the reusable bottles and grocery bags but am excited about this and want to give this sustainable option a chance! Your videos give me hope that I can eventually make a bigger impact on changing the environment
slowly on my period switching over to reusable pads and period underwear. I’m so far doing reusables on my light days and not my heavy days. But it’s going so well it won’t be long until my whole period is waste free. And if I’m being honest it’s been so much better.
Taylor i want to try reusable period items but my flow is so heavy that I’d have to change too often thus causing more laundry. I’ve tried period panties instead of panty liners to catch overage for when I can’t get to the bathroom fast enough. But days 1-8 are heavy.9-11 are probably better for reusable items
De Wa I find that my bamboo fiber pads absorb WAY more than traditional disposables. I’m a tampon and pad at the same time kinda flow and can totally get away with a cloth pad. I also feel like I have to change my pad way less often.
@@de5072 I understand your pain. I went through SO many pads every month until I heard about the Diva Cup. If your home bathroom has a layout where you can rinse out your cup while seated I HIGHLY recommend 😅 Can also bring a (reusable) water bottle to rinse them out in public bathroom stalls. I still use pads with it just to be safe, but way less than ever before, which makes it feel a lot more manageable to swap out the pads themselves for something sustainable too. As someone who's never used tampons, it was surprisingly easy to get used to. Hope you find what works best for you!
De Wa have you tried a menstrual cup? Much easier to deal with heavy periods than other reusable items because you can empty it and wash it there and then.
I am in the same bubble as your 16 year old self, I got called weird and still do to this day because I want to help the environment. That is actually why I stopped trying for a while but then I came across your channel and some other eco friendly people and it motivated me to start again. So thank you. And let's show them that they are the weird ones for not caring for our planet 🌏
Hi! I'm in the intermediate stage of this journey. We have no paper products except for toilet paper. My husband is not budging on that one. We have precious few chemicals, I think only 5. We are still working on food waste and packaging because my husband really likes frozen and canned foods. I can't quite get away from that. I'm trying out reusable dryer sheets: vinegar and water. We're also trying recyclable toothbrushes and toothpaste tabs. I've been on this journey for over 25 years. Our garbage is down to two bags in one week, including cat litter. You are doing great work in these videos. This does make a huge difference for the earth and for those of us who are willing to change to keep our earth. Hugs!
I just found your channel and damn -- you're such a light on this earth and I love you already 💚💚 I've been on this journey too for 6 or so years, and I've let go of progressing as I let myself lower my standards of what I do for the earth to increase my self love and yady yada... but I'm ready to go full force again and do the best I can for earth 💚💚 Don't feel you have to apologise for crying dude I totally feel you and relate so friggin much! Thank you for inspiring me already, and for all the help/resources I know I'll find through your channel. Peace + Love 💚💙💛
I'm a beginner in all of this and you are the first youtuber that talks/feels genuine. Thank you for taking the time to educated us. Im trying my best to change my habits and within my means that I can afford. Keep it up! Can't wait to see your other videos 💕🙌
I absolutely loved your video as a person who aspires for a zero waste lifestyle it can be really intimidating for someone who doesn't know where to start. Thank you for the beginner tips. Never stop trying to save the world, the world needs more people like you!
Congratulations on 200K!. The video idea on the impact of so many people is a really cool idea. We often get told that it doesnt make any difference what we do as one person. I know my flatmate has said it to me a few times. It would be interesting to hear what a huge difference one person can make and even better 200K people etc.. I think you should do the video Shelbi! Keep up the good work and get better soon!
I REALLY appreciate how you talk about an prioritize making organic and non-toxic choices part of your routine!! Some people in the "zero waste"/low waste space seem to totally ignore the environmental importance and impact of this
THANK YOU for not only explaining how to make swaps, but WHY it matters and is so important! I just found your channel and your passion, personality and knowledge is why I subscribed. Much love. ❤️
Cups can be intimidating, especially if you haven't even used tampons before like me. They take some getting used to for sure. At some point you just have to say "I paid money for this, I am going to use it!" and follow the care instructions and just try it out. I promise they don't bite, the main thing is to make sure you've broken suction by pinching before removing. Inserting gets easier with practice, and since you have reusable pads you can use them in conjunction until you are confident that you only need one or the other. I hope you give it a try!
Yaas I hate when I am traveling and forget mine and have to use pads/tampons. Also my heavy flow days don't bother me anymore. (No more pad diaper at night!)
See... I haven't been able to get a cup to work for me. (Period is REALLY heavy) I found some reusable pads and some super plus tampons with no applicator. That is what works for me.
You have made my life turn around environment-wise. I've always seriously cared about the environment, and before watching your channel I got my high school to start using compost bins for ORT, and had gotten 3-4 families to switch to composting. But I was so blind and didn't really understand everything about the environment or how I was contributing to the very things I was appalled by. Watching all of your videos has helped me switch and save and become educated, and (bonus) I love the way you talk and do your videos so it's also very entertaining. So I really appreciate you. Don't be afraid to cry about things your passionate about. :)
Your passion and emotion at the end are beautiful and honestly inspiring. To 200k more! And how you didn't put a certain price but saved up your own money so you can give the winners something they actually need is just adorable. You are an amazing human being❤
Just for the peeps that don’t live in a state that has a plastic bag ban... some grocery stores will give you ten cents back for every bag you bring in. Maybe just a little incentive to remember 🤷🏽♀️🌱
I dont think canada does that ut that's a great incentive. One of our grocery stores will either give you the money off your bill (5cents per bag I believe) or they donate that money to the local food bank. Which 99.9% of people usually do. So that's cool.
Thank you so much for sharing about carbon neutrality!!! I had actually never heard of that before but pretty much every zero waste product I’d need, needed to be shipped to me and I was very concerned about the shipping emission or whatever. I’m gonna try it out thank you so much!!!
The phrase that I come back to again and again is, "The perfect is the enemy of the good." Too often I run into frustration that I can never seem to do enough. I forget my bags half the time... Well, half the time I remember them. It seems like when I remember my bags, I don't have as many as I need... Yeah, but, every bag that I have is one less single use bag in my life... Progress is an iterative process. If you take half a step backwards for every step forwards, you are still getting somewhere. Be proud of your accomplishments, no matter how small, and try to build on them over time. You can't do that if you are too busy with self-flagellation to even see that we live in an imperfect world and each of us can only do our best.
From Sydney, Australia. Started watching your vids yesterday whilst in self isolation. Ive been leading a low-waste low-plastic life since August 2019. Just wanna say you're bloody unreal and you're doing a ripper job, mate. I'm not anti-plastic but I am against the misuse and abuse of plastic. You did a video on using up what you have already and I agree with you. Some people don't understand that using the plastic you already have at home and keeping it out of the recycling and the landfill bin is really important. I'll clean and reuse plastic Mount Franklin bottles at home (some I've had for over 2 years) and I feel particularly in the medical industry plastic is a better option. I still use my plastic Chinese takeaway containers 15years later. When swapping stuff out it's a great idea to use what you have already. Congrats on your subscription numbers. You are making a difference.
It’s raining here today… I’m on school holidays (summer in Australia), perfect plan for today is to work my way through these videos. I was very very heavily into zero waste and veganism a few years ago and completely burned myself out. I want to get back to some level of balance with it as we have gone so far in the other direction. I love the work that you’re doing. I realise that now my kids are unsure about which package goes into which bin is not ok… but also me freaking out about them buying a drink in a plastic bottle when we were out together as a family was also not ok. Thank you for providing balanced advice. Also.. I LOVED that you cried… it brought me back!
I'm no where near where I want to be with being more eco friendly just because I cant afford it yet, but this video is really inspiring me to try to slowly swap out my products, which would be easier for me to try to ease into than all at once
Hey, since you have a house/garden are you intererested in gardening? How About a video on growing your own herbs etc? I heard the no dig method is the most simple one you can do.
I have learned so much from you and have been slowly making changes to reduce my waste, it's been a long journey but your videos are so helpful in all the ideas you have and the fact that you've done so much research, and in keeping me motivated when the rest of the people in my life aren't very conscious about this. I don't feel as isolated. You are definitely making a difference. Thank you.
You made a difference to me. I pretty much quote you everyday. I am making swaps one at a time and encouraging those around me to do the same. Still everyone points out what I’m not doing right.... but I can’t do all good the world , but the world needs all the good I can do.
I’m so proud for you!! Congratulations! You have inspired so many of my zero waste habits and I always look forward to seeing your videos to see what new inspiration I can get. Shelbi... the 2020 Lorax ... speaking for the earth 🌍
An intermediate for clothes is finding a store that buys "off" or out of season clothing from retailers for dirt cheap thatd otherwise be thrown away. In WV we have Gabes, but ask around in local FB groups and you'll find one! I just got $65 retail Lane Bryant pants for $10 BECAUSE THE POCKET WAS STITCHED SHUT! So I just seemed ripped it open (retailers do this for transit to keep pockets flat but they get opened at distribution centers, some are missed though).
I love Gabe's!!! Regardless of the more eco-friendly aspect, I've found really amazing quality brands for soooo cheap. My husband finds cheap Carhartt clothing all the time, and I just got a pair of Lucky brand jeans for 19 bucks.
You're so personable and real. I have grown up doing some reuseable/sustainable/zero waste just for cost effective reasons. I just enjoy listening to you and your personality.
Hey, You are not a weirdo. People who are not thinking about earth are selfish people. I want to say I love you. Thank you so much for bringing such beautiful content. I am using most of your tips : for swapping eco friendly laundry, grocery shopping. The list is just on. I am sure a lot of us value your thoughts and not a lot of people can openly talk about it and own their lifestyle. Lastly, I love you gurl and happy new year :)
