My new book is out: www.kathleenspracklen.com/book
Join me for a brief, daily chat, talking about creating believable character portrayals by understanding why people do what they do, and the forces that drive them. I've been on a long diversion driven by your requests and questions into how a Zettelkasten works. Since you need real sources to illustrate a Zettelkasten in action, I am employing my new book as an anchor book and adding other, related, sources to illustration ideas interacting.
If you've ever wanted to start a Zettelkasten or you are wondering what all the excitement is about, this is the series to catch. If you want to follow along and get your Zettelkasten off the ground, you might want to pick up my book.

Best video ever to understand the index in a Zettelkasten. Thank you Kathleen for such a clear video!

Brilliant teaching. The system that you show in your zettelkasten somehow reflects the generous nature of the person making and sharing it.

Julianne, thank you for your sweet, encouraging words. Where are you with your Zettelkasten?

My Zettelkasten is 7 months old, filling about 1/2 of its shoebox home. It's still a bit "write-only." I believe that building connecting threads (as you show) between the box and my journals will help me develop it into a partner.

@@juliannesharer You are well underway, then. Congratulations. Yes, I would encourage you to bring your journal content into your Zettelkasten. Let me know if there is an area you would like me to present on.

Thank you so much for this instructive and stimulating series, Kathleen!! (Very much in the spirit of Zettelkasten, by the way, that this branch in your creative journey has taken on an increasingly complex life of its own while maintaining constant resonance with the larger gestalt of your work.) I sincerely appreciate the depth, quality and nitty-gritty detail of what you're sharing here, and the beautiful generosity of spirit that shines through it all. Here's the first question I've gotten up the courage to ask you: what are your thoughts on taking a more minimal/sparse approach to the index, at least in the very early stages of developing your Zettelkasten? I confess that while the thoroughness of your multi-keyword indexing is attractive to one part of me, another part wonders whether the keyword approach might actually fragment the focus of a more discussion-driven query about where to place the new card. (i.e., a new (as yet unnumbered) main card might best follow a card somewhere in the Zk with which it has *no common keywords* because of the way it develops the surrounding discussion that card is a part of). In other words, wouldn't just flipping through the main box with a kind of loose, intuitive awareness of discussions trigger the most appropriate/relevant (and perhaps creative/serendipitous) discussion-contributions? I see my question is itself beginning to branch out.. so in short: I wonder what insight or criticism you might offer in response to my desire for a lighter index which tracks not every keyword in every new main card, but instead tracks key discussions in the main box, with each index entry linking to cards serving as entry points to certain key ranges or moments of those discussions? Apologies for the prolixity, and many thanks to you once again. :)

Thank you for your insightful questions, Alex. (And BTW, I'm intrigued by your neurobiology playlist - I may have to check out those videos.) I think you just gave me the topic for this evening's podcast, if I may defer my answer for a few hours. I'm so happy that you decided to voice your question.

Your video is up, Alex : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XE-_PFOd-ls.html Yesterday's upload attempt never finished processing. I tried again this morning and it worked just fine.

Another great video! The real world examples make it so clear. My favourite part was seeing how your system evolved over time. I had resistance to starting a Zettelkasten because I feared making a mistake and needing to start over. But you showed how “old” cards using different methodologies and symbols remain useful. Awesome! I wonder what your next evolution of your Zettelkasten technique might be? Is there anything you’re tempted to tweak and see what happens?

Good to hear from you again, Matty. Now that's an interesting question. I don't have any tweaks I'm exploring right now, but your question is a great reminder to remain open. I think there's one out there just beyond my current reach. How is your Zettelkasten progressing?

@@KathleenSpracklen I’ve just started a new Zettelkasten, but using a digital tool (Obsidian). I understand this is frowned upon in the “antinet” Scott Scheper world! I’m attempting to adhere to the same principles as the analog system, which is why I’m watching your videos. As one example, I’ve hidden the global search feature, which forces me to index. I’m only about 30 notes in, so it’s early days. What I can already tell, compared to my previous methods, is the process of finding a good parent and tightly relating two notes together is really fun! And it’s already leading to some insights. Do you think it’s possible to apply these principles you teach to the digital world? I believe it’s possible with some discipline and understanding on the purpose of the principles - which happen to be what you’re great at explaining!

@@turnseye I think you are approaching digital with just the right spirit. If anyone can make digital work, it's probably you with your approach. I've never used any of the digital tools other than Notion, which I use to collect links to digital content. I think much of the complaint against digital tools is the ease with which you can scoop up vast quantities of digital content without absorbing any of it. I think you are avoiding that trap. The proof will be in how it works for you and the degree to which you can experience the interplay of ideas on related cards. Only you can judge that.
