At first he just wanted them destroyed and out of town but she kept coming back and winding him up. I think she intrigued him by not backing down easily and challenged him and picked at his wounds. (some compassion creeping in there as well) I think he wants to win, wants to beat her, conquer her, show her who's boss, and at another level just have her around....to fight with, to own.....some kind of conquering the enemy thing and possession. Like he wanted to buy their house and the house he lived in to remember his suffering. Could he want to own her because it's like owning everything associated with his pain also? But if he wasn't attracted to her he would have just sent her to jail. At some level he might even have just enough compassion that he doesn't really want to send her to jail? Something like this? Also I think he doesn't really know why he's doing it. He looks confused and conflicted. He's sorting through his feelings. He has no idea what to do with her. I think also he's lonely with his pain and has nobody to talk to but because of their fighting she's opening up his wounds and in a weird way sharing it with him. It's like she's digging out the thorn with a thorn...healing him. If she were to be gone there would just be this house .....he got what he wanted but it's empty. Their fighting is healing him and easing his loneliness.

@@francesb-p2441so interesting to read this! Yes, he realises how hollow hatred is once its motive is achieved. What to do once you have defeated someone? The pain still doesn't go away. As a possible love interest, an object of compassion, as someone he can dominate with his power, gender, and money, she is of value to him; he is not quite sure at this point what she is to him but he is uncontrollably drawn to her. We, of course, think it is love, but he is still conflicted and not sure at this point. And for a long time afterward!
