so cool it doesn't need sprague's or bands to work a weaker part in turbo 400's and 727 transmission as the the 70's big power car's ended up eating them like candy 🍬 yes the aftermarket is backing this transmission well enough to get used as swap's and or hot rod'ed/modified from OEM/dealership's configurations

Too bad vehicle manufacturers rate it as lifetime fluid transmission. Tere should be a provision to make fluid changes easier. I burned the crap out of my hand when doing so.

I've been following you for a long time & each time BARELY grasping how the transaxle operates. I thought nothing will top that 9HP transaxle in your last video, but those ZF boffins actually managed to top even that insanity. Now I'm reminded why I'm a Sociology & not an Engineering major. Kudos & thanks for this in-depth tour of this engineering masterpiece.

Because my dad recently got a new car with this 8-spd transmission, I became curious about auto transmissions in general. Let's just say that small curiousity costed me many many hours of deep diving into internet before I could find anything that was enough in-depth and not too focused on math. With this video I'm finally starting to understand. So thanks!

The transmission is very simple as the mister said. All gear sets interact with each other to provide 8 gear ratios. To develop this gear sets they actually used a supercomputer to calculate the rate at which these gears sets are moving. Mechanically its a very simple and repairable transmission if attended by a specialist of course.

I own a 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and it uses the 2nd generation ZF8 and it is arguably one of the smoothest and best performing transmissions currently on the market. The ones in non-V8 FCA (Chrysler) vehicles are actually made right here in the states since ZF gave FCA the license to produce the 8HP50 under their trademarked name Torqueflite 8 - 850RE. However, for all their diesel and V8 vehicles, FCA still buys the 8HP75 (the second generation of the 8HP70 shown in your great video) from ZF in Germany. This is the first time I have seen an expert actually demonstrate all the internal gearing and mechanisms of the ZF8, and in such great detail. Thank you for your work professor.

Great info. When Chrysler introduced this transmission series I took a 2 day training class of disassembly and reassembly. The instructor stressed do not repeat do not lay the transmission on its side and drag the parts out onto the bench. Use the square box stand used for the g56 trans. Stand it up at all time. Dragging the parts out and falling onto the bench will distort the steel drums. A guy in my class drug the parts out onto the bench. Damaged a drum. That class has been changed to a 1 day service class. Only component we at the dealership can replace is valve body and external seals.

Apparently FCA builds versions of these transmissions on their own, using an agreement with ZF. They then rename them with their own conventions (for example, my Jeep Wrangler has the 850RE), change the gear ratios, and write their own software to control them. So, if you buy a FCA vehicle, you aren't necessarily getting a 100% actual ZF transmission. Many people have found that the FCA versions are clunky and have several problems, many of which FCA has attempted to cure with software updates.

WeberAuto There’s a serious flaw in these 8HP70’s supposedly built by FCA, in that shifting 1>2 first time each day after an overnight rest causes a delayed shift and surge into 2nd gear, speculation on causes vary from a leak down of fluid from the clutch C or E piston, to poor software control, but seeing as it’s only after that first drive off each day, most likely it’s a leak, is there any way you could look into this and do a video on how this might occur and a possible fix? One theory may be a bad o-ring and the other is that the fluid level is too low, even when filled correctly via procedure, and the leak down may be due to a break or gap in fluid continuity between the path to the clutch piston and the pan fluid level, allowing it to vacate the piston and be replaced with air in a slow overnight process which then is repopulated once the clutches are engaged again. If FCA have changed the fluid level requirements from the original design due to 4x4 needs as to not act as over filled on steep inclines and therefore reduced the full capacity, this may be the reason for the initial one-off poor shift as that would be the time it’s at its lowest level and allow a leak down over time. Your thoughts? Would you be interested in looking into it? Thanks in advance for your input.

Very good job at describing the internals of the ZF8 speed. I understood everything that you said. Very Complex And mathematical design genius to come up with such A efficient transmission. It looks like it wouldn't be that hard to work on No clutch plates to deal with all ran on planetary And Simpson gears. And I can't believe the certain housings that inner connect For the shifting of the transmission. I have the same transmission in my 2017 ram 1500 And I love it incredibly smooth. It always seems to find the right gear to be in. Anyway I would love to see you explain the 10 speed transmission that ford and Chevy designers came up with. It is a very widely applied transmission from very little powered 120i of BMW all the way to something like the BMW M760LI or RR. It is certainly a very complicated device, well engineered just like its predecessor 6HP. I like the fact that it reacts almost like a gearless and keeps the Rev really low when cruising. I was lucky to have chances drove both 2008 BMW x3 and 2011 BMW x3, in both car it has the same engine(N52) and pretty much the similar shaft or cv joint except 2008 is 6HP while 2011 is 8HP. The amazing part is how low the Rev at 120Km/h, only 1900RPM compare to 2008 at roughly 3000RPM. That is enough to consider a possible fuel saving without doing too much modification. Of course with a turbocharged straight 6 on the 35i later in the series dropped it all the way down to just 1500RPM in a non-climbing situation. The other benefit is engine brake, though not a dedicated engine brake like trucks but with more gear, I get to select more braking resistance in wider range compare to the 6 speed where I can over shifting and it will prevent me from receiving such resistance. The other thing I found maybe not subject to just the transmission but it might be linked as well. it has lower resistance in its system when coasting in which the car can hold a speed much longer, sometimes in a few blocks on the road when I get to the speed of the traffic, doesn't has to be fast and 60km/h is more than enough, I can just coast the remaining distance to the traffic light without engaging either accelerator nor brake. After no doubt, I would choose another X3 but maybe the diesel version this time, still with the 8HP possibly.

Thats a beautiful thing. The math shouldn't be that complicated. Thanks for showing
