ZF5HP19 Front Pump Leak

It is very common for the pump bushing on the ZF5HP19 to spin out and fluid leak out of the front pump. The bushing sometimes gets welded to the converter hub. This happens because the converter goes bad and the particles adhere to the bushing til there is no more clearance inbetween the bushing and converter hub. At this point the bushing will spin out

I'm glad you go above and beyond to do the best job possible -even for what seemed a simple leak. You inform the customer, explain things, and try your best to hand them back a unit that is unlikely to comeback or fail prematurely. Such an admirable work ethic. Enjoy your Sunday. Big hugs! 🌞🤗🤗

Thank You for very well made informational videos. May be you have an answer for my 5HP19 problem. So, had the no reverse. Took trans out, and while I was doing the reverse drum fix I did a rebuild replacing all seals, clutch packs and what ever came with the original ZF rebuild kit. Put a new TC on. Installed trans. Major oil leak from bell hosing. OK I said, pulled the trans, replaced oil pump and replaced TC with yet another rebuilt one. Same thing. Major oil leak from bell housing. Now my engine blew a rod bearing. So, put a new low mileage engine in. Installed yet another new oil pump in trans after finding out the last one was some China BS supplier likely redoing the bearings. This time a new OEM ZF goes in. With the new seal already installed. I mated the trans to the engine outside of car, meaning I was able to really make sure all goes together nicely. Just test drove. Engine and all is well. SAME TRANS LEAK from bell housing. I AM ABOUT TO DO I DON'T KNOW WHAT....What could it be??? What did I screw up. First, no leak , but no reverse. No, trans shifts and runs well, but leaks after all the above??? The only thing I notice is a whine which is sometimes present. That is what I attributed to the well known front input bearing. But the bearing is good. Sits well in the pump. TC sits well in bearing. Tried with pump out before installing. Bearing looks good. WHERE IS THIS OIL LEAK COMING FROM? HELP , Please help. I am totally lost. And now I am to deep into to give up. You are the only expert I could imagine may have an answer to this freak thing. I am sure I screwed something up. But what? Opened trans twice? Went over everything meticulously with the ZF literature, diagrams ect. ?? Should I just blow it up?? May be you can shed light on this one.

ok, your 100% sure it's leaking from the front and not somewhere else but it appears to be the front, how bad steady stream leaking when car is running?. If it is leaking from the front , when you pull the trans back out and pull the converter off are you seeing anything with the front seal or converter?

@@GaryFerraro Thank you for responding. If you'd be local I'd be there. Well, that is what is so startling to me. It drips out of the openings on the bottom of the bell housing. I have it on the lift. With the engine running it starts dripping steady. Engine off, it stops. So my assumption was pressure side by oil pump. Remember I did replace the TC with a rebuilt. For good measure replaced TC (again) and Pump. Same problem again. Pulled trans again. Seal good. Nothing damaged. bearing good. TC looks good. So, new, this time ZF OEM oil pump goes in. Same TC this time. tripple checked. Looked for cracks. Outer O-ring on pump is new. I can't find any other places on front of trans where the oil could leak out. No missed blind plugs I can see. For good measure added gasket maker to the bolts around the pump thinking the little seal rings may be it. I cleaned outer case several times and was looking for outer possible sources. If it comes out of the bell housing my assumption is, it leaks by front of trans. Could slight overfilling cause this? Meaning it comes out somewhere else and somehow find its way out of the front? No idea. The first time I filled in car following ZF procedure w. engine running after hitting initial full on plug. This time I filled to spec by volume as I place the trans into the car as a unit with the engine. Thinking with you experience you may have some idea of something you may have seen. I am ready to bite the bullet and just get a junkyard trans and never open it. BUT....I rebuilt all the innards of this one with new clutches ect. I am lost... obviously. It is obvious I must be missing something. I can't wrap my head around.

@@gerhard5911 Ok, so there is a large o-ring and a smaller one for the body and gears, both o-rings are installed?
@gerhard5911
@gerhard5911 3 года назад
@@GaryFerraro Yes. Just double checked my pics. They are in. They show on ZF as part 10.360 and 10.030 came with rebuilt kit. Possibly unrelated what I found in the meantime. 1) Had to much oil in. Corrected that. (Can that be the cause?) 2) had very small leak on cooler pipes going into trans. My helper (son) missed the o-rings. Driving it today. Checking tonight on lift. Will post update.

@@GaryFerraro Hi, we are thinking along the same lines. I am questioning my own observation of it coming from the front. Yes its dripping out the bottom of the bell housing. But I am thinking there is something else going on, i.e. breather on top running into the bell housing from me overfilling? Something like that. I may have overfilled it. I didnt pay attention to ATF temp when I filled it. I drained exactly 1 qt of ATF. Trans shifts fine. 1Qt is a lot. I will check fill level again properly next couple days. And the front of TC and seal look perfect. Not a single thing or scratch on either which would make me think there is a problem. And since this is the 3rd time, well yeah...overfilling is the only constant possibility. Because rather than doing it correctly by procedure I prefilled based on the qty I filled before. Makes sense? Can overfilling cause this?

Gary thanks for the posted keep coming. I got a stupid question 03 x5 3.0...the front differential took a went. The suv right now won't go forward or reverse. I can feel the front differential is holding it..I can't get the nuts on the drive shaft out because I can't turn the shaft to remove the other nuts and bolts...the shaft is seized in there..can I cut off the front driveshaft so I can move the car..since the front differential ain't good. Do I need to look at other things in the car that could have went bad cuz of this issue
@GaryFerraro
@GaryFerraro 4 года назад
You need to look at tires are they all the Exact same model and size. The car may not move if you take the front shaft out. What happened to the bolts?
@kentpayen8848
@kentpayen8848 4 года назад
Thank you for replying back. I appreciate so much...yes the tires all the same model, size. The suv come to a hard stop. Check the front differential no fluid and I also found metal. I'm trying to remove the shaft..but the shaft won't spin for me to get to the other bolts..I'm tryin to move it to my garage to work on it P.s When I jack the rear. The vehicle is in park. The wheels spin freely even in drive is that normal..but when I put it to drive the wheel pick up speed when I give it gas ..does that mean my transfer case is bad or that's normal

@@GaryFerraro I had and 03 audi a4 with and 19fla the blew the front pump seal. I bought another for 600 dollars with 178k and the previous owner had driven it with about 1.5 litres down on fluid. I found this out when I had a service done and there was apparently a lot of clutch material. I just want to be prepared. The trans doesnt shift as firmly as the old one which in this case is not good.

I need help!!! I have a 07 bmw 525xi,it was sitting for about 1 yr when I bought it,long story short I replaced the engine and when I turned it on a loud noise was coming from transmission area possibly torque converter I'm not sure but I added more oil to transmission because I noticed it had a leak from pan so after adding trans fluid the noise went away but now transmission only acknowledges the gears and engages but WONT MOVE in any gear.So then out of frustration I bought another transmission from someone but it's from a 535xi which the shift cable and system is different apparently so now I dont know what to do and I have literally thousands in it now so any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks. (btw I have limited experience with BMW's).
