Hi Sandra! While I love the feeling on cotton (especially this Pima Cotton) I use it mostly in the stitches because it’s crisp and shows off the stitches so well :) I also love cotton because it’s hypoallergenic and renewable/natural (but will use acrylic for my blankets and you can certainly use it for this stitch :) )
I made a big afghan with this stitch the other month and your comment really has me thinking! I think it probably could, as long as you have the right multiples for the foundation chain. I think or this could get tricky, but not impossible is figuring out how to accommodate the multiples for the foundation and the tension in combination with each other. The way I could see it working is by obv starting with chain st, then your sc rnd, then starting the diagonal stitches. Doing it in the round would impact the color changes too. It may be a good idea to use a stitch marker and to experiment with it, avoid making an item with increases and decreases that’ll affect your stitch count in each round. If you deviate from the stitch count in the round, the stitches won’t be pulled to the side like they should. I went into way too much detail as I was mulling it over in my head, but I hope this helps. It doesn’t hurt to test it out
