Some artists are born with many talents but use one, few however develop the ability, drive, grit / practice and interest to actually hone many talents and make super successful professions out of them. Ustad Zakir Hussain and UstadMa Zila Khan are those very few who are able to create so much more in one lifetime. UstadMa Zila Khan apart from being a multiple award winning Indian Classical Music and Traditional Sufi singer, is the creator of Sufi-Jazz and Sufi-Fusion (recordings from 1999) and of course this trend became a rage with many present artists following her path which makes her very happy.
In this Lec-Dem video clip UstadMa Zila Khan lovingly gives the example of Ustad Zakir Hussain, a legend of our times in the Classical music scene and him acting in films and having a fusion band named Shakti in the 70's, she talks about her respect for such great artists with such abundant versatility. As is well known about UstadMa Zila Khan's great love and regard for honing different artistic skills, in here is also a video clip where she enjoined the 2 most famous songs of Peace - John Lenon's 'Imagine' and Gandhi ji's favourite 'Vaishnav Jan', singing the hindi and english verses intertwined in one another, it was the first time ever that any artist had ever joined these two songs together. Added to that the Jazz innovative style of music, makes the performance unique.
An LSR student asks about the various professions UstadMa Zila Khan has - she has made a documentary on her legendary father Ustad Vilayat Khan, its called Spirit To Soul, she is a very successful Theatre and Film actor, she is among the top in her Sufi Singing profession, she is a Music Composer and Producer and Curates Music Festival while also finding time to teach Classical and World Music through her UstadGah Foundation, she is an active advocate in Talks for Women Empowerment and Equality and as we all know she gives full fledged concerts in traditional and fusion Sufi styles, Classical music and Light Classical styles like Ghazals, Thumri's, Folk, etc. Her music vocabulary is vast and she enjoys it with all her audience worldwide.
Included here is a video clip of Zila Khan performing Vaishnav Jan and the song 'Imagine', she is the first artist to sing it together giving the Fusion genre a true international stamp.
All these innovations also differentiates UstadMa Zila Khan's concerts from other singers.
