One good turn truly deserves another. In the 1960s, at one time, Charlie Watts, who had so much respect for Ginger, had two drumming gigs and, when he heard that Ginger was struggling at one point and needed a gig, offered one of his own gigs to him. Ginger would later return the favour by recommending Charlie to one Brian Jones, and the rest in history.

Their relationship was complex like brothers, I think they loved each other like brothers and got on each others nerves like family. I personally would not describe it as hate.

You can go on forums on the internet dating back before 2008 of just Bonham fanboys and otherwise just disrespecting Ginger Baker. The Bonham fanboys started this mess as there will always be those whom not don’t know, but don’t care to know.
Get Ginger's book (at the library), YOU WILL LOVE IT. I learned so much. He loves polo. Who knew ? He's had his demons in life (women, drugs) but he's lived thru it all and he's still with us. AMAZING. He's one of the all-time GREATS. Still has all his Zildjian's from DAY ONE. The guy has his priorities in order, I guess. 9.24.16
people love believing all the bad things they hear about Mr. Baker. I personally have nothing but the highest respect for the man. my greatest influence for 49 years. the greatest compliment I ever had was when I auditioned for a band and after the first song the bass player turned to me and said, you sound like Ginger Baker.
kenneth kunie it's all those Bonham freaks with "Bonzo" as their alias. They always say the same, Baker was a hateful angry man when they haven't met the man they use that as way to judge his drumming when it is beyond comprehension to do so. That's the equivalent to saying Bonham was a fat drunk and that's why he is overrated. Baker was the best and first to contribute jazz drumming to rock n' roll. He is the best.
I just ripped someones ass over that too. A Bonham/Moon freak. Hey, arent they great!? Sure. But Ginger is in his own class. I always chide those flocks of drummers who say their big favs are so and so, AND Bonham, or start with Bonham. I say, ever heard early Phil Collins? Richie Hayward? Ginger Baker? Roger Taylor? Sly Dunbar? ....Nope. They havent. Hahaha!!!!
i think i see ginger as he is. he's ONE of the world's greatest drummers. he's more versatile than bonham or moon, who are also great (which people will know if they listen to enough of ginger's work). he's a bad man, but has also had bad things done to him. he's a liar, but more trust worthy than certain others. he's not as crazy or antagonistic as jack bruce, who gets by pretending to be nice, but has admitted that he got a kick out of provoking ginger. it's more rewarding to take someone as they are, as opposed to lionizing or demonizing them.
When I hear so many of my rock god dummers from the 80s and on.. most point to either Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Ringo Starr or Keith Moon as major influences if they know anything about early rock music. Just to name a few. RIP Ginger.
I was at this gig, a 14 year old back in 2008 at Shepherd's Bush Empire. Mitch Mitchell was going to be a surprise appearance but died a few weeks prior, if I recall correctly. Absolute fucking class night.
Sadly the problem with aging rock stars passing away little by little is that there's nobody taking their place. Who are the great and upcoming drummers of today? Who are the great and upcoming songwriters of today? There's nobody to pass the baton to.
