This research highlights how greetings vary based on factors such as the elephants' gender and whether they are making direct eye contact. Female elephants, forming "bond groups," exhibit strong social bonds, while males, with weaker social ties, engage in greetings primarily to mitigate potential conflicts during reunions. The study identified approximately 20 distinct gesture types utilized during greetings, illustrating how elephants combine these gestures with vocalizations such as rumbles, roars, and trumpets.
