I hope you enjoy this garden tour of all the different zinnias that I'm growing. Growing Benary's giants zinnias are one of my favorites!
Thanks for visiting the Freshcutky organic gardening channel. In the garden, I will answer some of the most common "gardening for beginners" type questions I get, including growing flowers from seed. Growing greens, growing flowers, and planting beautiful organic food is something I'm really passionate about. Thank you for joining me as I learn to grow flowers, cut flowers, vegetables, and much more. Freshcutky youtube channel and related media are for entertainment purposes only.

Many ornamental flowers and cut flowers are TOXIC. ALWAYS do your own research and take responsibility for the plants that you introduce around your kids, pets, and everyone else. Use common sense when handling plant materials: wear gloves, always wash hands, avoid contact with face, etc. NEVER consume any plant which has not been positively identified with complete certainty to be safe and edible. Before planting anything, research to determine whether specific flowers are considered invasive where you live or if there are laws that apply to their planting in your area.
------------------------
What is "@freshcutky"?
@freshcutky documents the pursuit of my goal of one day owning my own cut flower farm. Along the way, you'll see random projects, cooking, and of course - growing stuff. I'm not an expert, and would never claim to be. There's always more to learn - this is my journey. The purpose of my blog, and other social media accounts (including RU-vid) is to share ideas. I do my best to offer information that is useful, but reliance on that information is strictly at your own risk and NOT a substitute for professional advice of any kind. Rookie question: I want to bring some of my zinnias into the house as cut flowers. When I cut (pinch) them as you demonstrate, the stems are often too short for the vase. Can I nip the stems off deeper down the stalk and still get the doubling, reblooming impact?

Zinnia is my most favorite annual. When I die and my family has my memorial I hope that Zinnias will cover my urn. Lol. I grow zinnias every year. I haven’t tried the Benary Series and will order some for next year. I did try the Queen Lime Orange this year and am a bit disappoint so far. I’ll give them more time to mature. Can I save the seed from the Benary series or are they a hybrid and will not come true from seed?

All the info that I've been able to find says that Benary's are open pollinated. I may save some seeds this year and see what I get. The bees do A LOT of cross pollinating in my yard. Lol! 🌱🌱

Thanks for the video! I gave zinnias one shot when I first started gardening, and I hated the result, though it was surely due to my own ignorance. I picked a variety called peppermint stick, and I hated how unpredictable the coloration was. Most had the occasional bright solid red petal rather than the light red speckles on white that I expected. I also had no idea that I had to support them, and so the stems were curved and snake-like. Overall the plants felt scraggly. Yours however, look lovely and make me want to try again with a different variety (probably the benary's giant salmon). I'll also check out your FAQ before planting :)

@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 3 года назад
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to avoid leaf spot diseases. There are a few different causes - both bacterial and fungal. I've mainly read that it can be introduced by contaminated seed or spread from leftover garden debris - which is why I never compost the zinnias. I also avoid overhead watering and keep the foliage as dry as possible. This seems to help slow things down. Thanks for watching!

Benary's Giants get very, very tall - over 6ft here in my yard. Also, the foliage can start looking really rough by the end of the season, and may not be very pretty in the landscape. They may also need to be staked, as they can start falling over. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

I've never had an issue with earwigs. However, cucumber beetles are a major problem in my yard. 🐛🐛🐛

How do Zinnias stand up to wind? I’m so in love with these flowers and have small sunny areas to plant but we have quite a bit of wind in the summer and I struggle with other flowers. Please help!
@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 4 года назад
They do great against the wind when using a horizontal trellis net. Otherwise, they will definitely start falling over. 🌱🌱🌱

What is the difference in height on the regular Zinnias and the Giant Zinnias?
@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 4 года назад
I haven't noticed too much of a difference. Though, the Benary's giants do get very tall - about 6ft here in my yard. 🌱🌱🌱

Yes, it's not uncommon that they are taller than me by the end of the season. 🌱🌱🌱

I love planting zinnias seeds also. I usually just buy the seeds from the big box stores, but I never really see seeds as beautiful as those ones.

Do you plant in part shade or sun?
@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 4 года назад
Most of my zinnias get full sun with some shade during the hottest part of the day. 🌱🌱🌱

Hi been watching for a few months, love to watch. Zinnias-I have not grown any for years BECAUSE seems as if bottom 2/3 of plant stems/leaves always looked ugly with lots of brown spots, etc. and honestly never liked the FEEL of stems. Yours look so wonderfulLy beautiful I want to go for it again. Also I’m one one those people who seldom cut my flowers, It just hurt to think about that🤪
@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 4 года назад
Bacterial leaf spot is very common in zinnias and can cause those "ugly" leaves at the bottom of the plant. I have yet to find a way to prevent it, unfortunately. Thanks so much for watching! 🌱🌱🌱

Love all your Zinnias. I live in Northern California. I’ve always had good luck planting Zinnias outside. Do you start yours outside or inside? I see you have some kind of tape crossing between your plants, what are those? I’ve seen someone growing Zinnias with some kind of ground cover sheets with what looks like holes for the plants, do you do that? If so what is the ground cover sheeting & what is the spacing?

I love zinnias! Do you battle powdery mildew? I’m in Texas. It’s humid, and powdery mildew is my enemy. I won’t stop growing zinnias, though. I use neem oil but it never goes away completely.

They’re all so gorgeous!! I am wondering about cutting them back. Mine are about 5 feet tall and flopping over into my sidewalks. I’ve been cutting and deadheading regularly. Since there’s still 2 months of growing left could I cut them in half and have them rebloom again?
@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 4 года назад
You can definitely trim them back a little bit. I have a video about pinching that might be helpful, as it explains the branching habit a little more. 🌱🌱🌱

Hey from Virginia zone 7a- this is the fifth time viewing this video and have added it to my 'liked' collection; thank you for sharing. I love zinnias in the vegetable garden, this is my second growing them as a side complement to a 8 year old vegetable plot. I grew wedding white last year but wanted something taller than could stand up to the vegetables I grow; so went with the giant lime and had the same experience of early dirty centers you address in this video, nonetheless I love them and will replant them next year. Hope to hear your posts of your giant limes in 2021.

I couldn’t get Golden Hour from Floret, but I did get Unicorn Mix and Little Flower Girl to add to my various Benary’s colors and Queen Lime series. I learned a lot last year, my first year winter sowing, and have a better plan for this year’s cutting garden! I’m so excited!
