Most of my zinnias are originally from seeds that my mom gave me 45 years ago, when my husband and I moved into our first home. I grew and harvested these seeds/plants every year, and hadn’t ever actually bought zinnia seeds until a couple of years ago. The reason I bought seeds that year was because I didn’t have any of the Candy Cane variety. This year, I bought a couple of packets of zinnia seeds at Walmart, hoping to get some colors that I didn’t have much of. I probably won’t buy zinnia seeds next year. When I harvest my seeds, I never try to pick the seeds out. I put whole flower heads in a paper sack to store over the winter. In the spring, I crumble the flower heads apart and sprinkle seeds, petals and all in a small narrow trench and cover lightly with soil. I figure the petals and all of the other chaff make a compost. I live in southern MO and usually wait until around the first of May, after frost dangers are over, to plant my zinnias. They usually start coming up in about 10-14 days, and then start to bloom around the first of July. They are definitely one of my favorite flowers, and I love to see the butterflies that visit them!

In the Victorian Era ‘language of flowers , zinnias mean ‘thoughts of absent friends’ or close variations of that. Started growing my own in grad school in teeny garden with roommates. Hence, as grad school days ended, and we each established our own homes…zinnias have been a part of our own gardens though many miles apart. Though many decades ago, this tradition has been maintained and shared with others, too!

Last year I discovered that butterflies were eating some wild parsely and cocooning in my garden. Plus, I have milkweed growing in my garden area that attracts polinators. So I decided to add Zinnias this year, not just for the bees, but also for the butterflies that emerge long after many other flowers are spent close to fall.

I recently discovered my first powdery mildew issue with a zinnia. It's in a container completely separated from any other plant. In fact, it's raised above the ground sitting atop a scrap piece of I-beam. It gets more shade than any of my other zinnias, though, in the PNW zone 8-b. Summer seems to be ending early this year and we have experienced a mild amount of rainfall already. Since I container garden, the solution I'm getting is to move it into a sunnier space. That's the beauty of container gardening.

I love zinnias, probably because it is really easy to be successful with just a handful of seeds. I told my husband a couple of months ago, "Remind me I don't need any more zinnia seeds." His response: "But there might be some you don't have!" I've got zinnias, dahlias and salvia ready to go in the ground, but we are having such an extended spring here in zone 7B N MS that the poppies, bachelors buttons, nigella and larkspur are still blooming and I can't bear to pull them up (although I need that spot!). I start Persian Carpet zinnias in mid to late July for fall bloom. Aztec Sunset and Jazzy Mix are also good colors for fall, and cosmos Rubenza. My reseeded zinnias never come back as the original variety: they're always pink. At my old house and my mom's, they always came back orange. I'm trying 'Inca' and 'Sungod' this year for late summer-fall bloom.

Add minerals to change the flower colors. I moved an orange flowering shrub, when it flowered in new location? The flowers were 3x bigger but they were white! The new location was close to the house. Probably nails in the dirt from the build of the home….

Great video! I'm growing Benarys Giant for the first time this year in SE England - fingers crossed for some warm weather 😅 Tip I learned recently is rather than change shelves and lighting, raise the trays up onto other seed trays and place the heat mat in-between -- this gives you a lot more flexibility as the seedlings grow to then drop the trays lower

Bonjour!

Hi. I just started watching your video on zinnias to learn more about these plants. I’m planning to grow 2 different varieties this year: zinnia Giant Purpke by Botanical Interest and white zinnias that I picked up from the local nursery. I am curious how you like your 12 pack seed starter trays? I’ve been growing veggie seeds in to-go containers and plastic egg cartons this year with great success. But I think I’m ready to upgrade. Thanks.

Hmm, if they are all brown, they might be goners. You could try deadheading them and then making sure they are watered regularly and see if they come back.

HI Amanda, I just found your channel. Everyone says zinnias are easy to grow but I haven't had much luck. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I know they need to be in full sun. I need to know what kind of soil they need and what kind of fertilizer? I am making a special bed just for zinnias. I am in central Alabama. Thank you!

Just soil that drains well and make sure to mix in a couple of bags of compost.

NEVER let seedlings dry out when direct seeding. That is usually the cause of failure I think. Best wishes on another try in 2024.

Yes but you need to make sure that greenhouse doesn’t get to hot for the seedlings … you can literally cook them if you are not careful!

Thank you. . Your video awas very helpful.I really enjoyed it. And subscribed to see more. I love zinnias This is the first time that I actually bought a PKG of seeds and grew some. The first batch didn't get moved under lights soon enough and we're too leggy. Second batch started under a grow light. They got leggy too. But not as bad. Yesterday, I planted them deep. Burying most of the stem. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Will this work? Or should I just plant another batch of seeds outside?

For zinnias, typically directly into the garden depending on the temps outside.

Ok, I'm going to be the spoiler in this love fest on zinnias. First, let me admit, I live on an acre where almost the entire perimeter is lined with 50+ year old trees. So my "full" sun situation is questionable. Second, this is my 3rd attempt at growing zinnias and this year has been the most challenging. The seedlings I planted out early May (Zone 7, Maryland) have been taken over by some bug, but I never see them on the plants. So out of 24 plants, I think 4 or 5 have grown beyond 4 or 5", the others are gone. I even tried direct sowing unsuccessfully. I started another 24 and just planted them out yesterday, so fingers crossed. I think if I really want to be successful, I'm going to need to consider moving some plants that might give me a space with a little more sunlight. Having said that, I have put my sunflowers in the most sun in my yard and they seem to be more successful. It's not that I don't like zinnias, I think they don't like my conditions.😔😏

Zinnias are a favorite of mine too. And I've been trying to grow more veggies this year so I have neglected broadcasting my zinnia seeds. But maybe it's not too late? I did have a zinnia elegant volunteer crop up and is blooming profusely in a bed where I have a Japanese Yew, Limelight hydrangea, and a gorgeous oak leaf hydrangea. Unfortunately, my beautiful oak leaf hydrangea bit the dust and I cannot determine why. One day it was gorgeous and blooming and the very next day it was dried up and gone! It was the third year for it and I was so upset about it. What in the world could have killed it? The only thing I can think of is we hired Weedex to help with our disappearing St. Augustine here in the North Texas area. Could whatever they sprayed killed my oakleaf hydrangea? I have been so upset about it but I know I have to move on. But should I plant another one and pray and not let Weedex in my back yard? I an do without the grass! LOL. Just not my hydrangeas. Interestingly, the Limelight hydrangea about two feet from it is just fine. Do you have any clues for me, Amanda? Sorry, I know this is about Zinnias. Those I don't have too much of an issue with -- so far. But thanks for your always helpful and inspiring videos!
