Zipf’s law is a mysterious relationship that describes the frequencies of words or the populations of cities to inverse relationships. The law was coined by an American linguist named George Kingsley Zipf. He discovered this law by looking at the relative frequencies of words in a large text, like the famous book Moby Dick. Watch this video to know more about this law.

Some of the clips used are confusing. What's the point of showing a clip of random equations in the middle of an explanation?

it says "Explained" but you only talk about what it is and not why it happens

So if I say, “I'll explain what happened yesterday,” do I also have to explain why it happened?

Does a word's rank in the zipfian hierarchy relate to it's meaning? Do different languages use words with the same meaning at the same rate to express the thoughts of their speakers?
@Ken.-
@Ken.- 11 месяцев назад
You don't even have the word 'The' in many languages. The words won't even match from two different books, but they will follow the distribution law.
@sethapex9670

@@Ken.- how do you have a formal written language without the definite article "the" how do people refer to the specific things verses the category of the thing?
@Ken.-
@Ken.- 11 месяцев назад
@@sethapex9670 Depends on the language I guess. About half of them don't use articles, like Latin, Russian, Turkish, etc. Mostly it's understood through context or they just use the word for 'this/that'.

I was wondering the same thing. To me it just sounds like a really cool but ultimately useless (at the very least unreliable) coincidence that Zipf stumbled upon. There is something to be said about why so many structures and systems eventually become self-similar, but what exactly? Who knows...
