Because she didn't like the way they were writing her character, compared to the way Ziva was in the beginning. She developed Ziva for 8 years, and she felt that they were doing her and the character a disservice. But she stated that she would come back , if the story was really good. Now that Ziva is alive, it's looking like a strong possibility. Michael Weatherly said he would return as well. Their return will probably be a 2 or 3 part episode arc.
