Zoji La or Zojila Pass meaning mountain pass of blizzards is a high-altitude mountain pass in the Himalayas. It is located in Dras subdivision of Kargil district of J&K, the pass connects the Kashmir Valley to its west with the Dras and Suru valleys to its northeast and the Indus valley further east. Situated on National Highway 1A between Srinagar and Leh in the western section of the Himalayan mountain range, traverses the pass.
Zoji La is about 120 km from Srinagar, and about 20 km from Sonmarg it provides a vital link between Ladakh and the Kashmir Valley and is 11,575 ft above sea level and is the second highest pass after Fotu La on Leh highway. The road normally remains closed during winter months. Its is said that this is the Pass through which Buddhism travelled from India to Tibet and China and beyond. The pass is one of the oldest and highest motorable passes in India. The pass offers breathtaking views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains, rugged landscapes, and deep valleys. The picturesque beauty of the region attracts numerous tourists and adventurers. Zojila Pass is known for its treacherous terrain and unpredictable weather conditions. The road through the pass is narrow, steep, and prone to landslides, making it a challenging route. Apart from being a tourist attraction, Zojila Pass holds great strategic importance due to its nearness to the Line of Control (LOC) between Pakistan and India. The Pass is close to Several trekking routes, including the famous Amarnath Yatra. Though the Pass is very exciting but travellers should check with local authorities or reliable sources for the latest information and road conditions before planning a trip to Zojila Pass.
The road is a part of ancient and historical Silk route to Central Asia and Tibet.
In 2018 Zojila Tunnel Project was inaugurated which is a 30 km long mega project comprising of many long bridges and 14 km long longest road tunnel of India which will reduce travel time on Zojila pass from 3hrs to 15 minutes bypassing most dangerous stretch up to Dras. The project is due for completion in 2026.
Battle between India and Pakistan backed militias were fought in 1947-48 using Battle tanks at this height making it one of the highest tank battle fields of the world.
