Zolpidem is a widely used hypnotic that operates at the GABAa receptor. Compared to benzodiazepines, it produces less anxiolysis, muscle relaxation, and anticonvulsant action.
At medical doses, it produces little beyond sedation and the negative effects are mild. Due to personal variation, effects like euphoria, CEVs/OEVs, and anxiolysis are rarely noted at only 10 mg. Those effects appear more often (though still not reliably) at common to strong doses.
It is effective at improving sleep onset, though the instant-release version isn't very effective at maintaining sleep throughout the night.

I have taken this medication for years. Some days I'll wake up in the morning and realized I have cooked a huge meal and have no memory of it. Sometimes I'll send out texts or calls as well .

omg I know exactly what you mean, once I supposedly went for a walk and called my friends mom at like 3 am asking for him, and I had a cut on my hand (I think I punched a tree).....I woke up thinking I went to bed, and a friend had to tell me all of it and I had NO memory of any of it.

many years ago a neighbor kid about 18 y/o was found by a drunk ass me in front of my house walking down the side walk totally naked at 3 AM. Thought i was just imagining it lol. I turned him around & whispered in his ear to go back to bed. He went back into his house so i assume he was ok. The next day i told him he should start wearing PJ's cuz the neighbors might not like it bein naked while sleepwalking lol. He looked at me real strange, then a look of horror, then said oh shit its that fucking ambien again!

I have once tripped on zolpidem, I took 20mg (I started with alergy testing, then took the first 10 mg and added the next 10 after an hour or so), I felt dizzy af and I had blurred vision. I saw photos in my computer pulsing and slowly moving, turning from 2D into 3D, I also heard them whispering, it felt like the persons and/or animals there were trying to escape the photos. It was pretty fascinating but the sedating effect was extremely ovewhelming but I think that combining this with coffee, energy drinks or cocaine is plain nuts so I went to sleep - and it was a very awesome sleep. The next day I found out that I ate a whole bag of tangerines, I had no memory of it.

I personally have effects from just 10 mgs...and I weigh 250lbs. I have open eye visuals. It's most pronounced when looking at screens, like video ges or movies. Whatever the main focus of the screen is, it will make that thing appear to be 3-D. Like it's popping right out of the screen. It's actually a very pleasant experience and somewhat euphoric. More so than Xanax or other benzo or benzo like things. It feels like it takes over my while central nervous system and for a couple hours everything is smooth sailing. When I was an IV heroin user, there were only two things that would help with withdrawal. Well, three counting Suboxone or methadone. But anyway, yea, Ambien and gabapentin or pregabalin (lyrica). But the Ambien was the best short term relief. It's like it hijacks your body and doesn't let you experience the negatives. Unless you take too many....then you could start having looping thoughts...which is super worrying. But not really serious.... anyway, that's my experience.... All in all I give Ambien a 3/10 for intended use. And a 9/10 for off label/recreational/ therapeutic use. Addendum: these effects only occur when I've taken the medicine on an empty stomach.

@@Angel-yp6nl yeah, it's the least I could do. Once I took an entire bottle in less than 2 days. Because of the euphoria. I don't remember much about that time but I remember I didn't die or overdose. At least not in a dangerous way (that I could tell anyhow)... Ambien also helps a LOT with benzodiazepine withdrawal. It takes the symptoms away for about 2 hours per 10mg dose. However after a couple doses you start getting the other, less desirable effects. Like it changes the way things taste to me, it causes me to feel like I'm going to vomit (though it's not anxiety inducing). And of course, the hallucinations. Not fun in the middle of benzo withdrawal. Better to stick to valium or librium for withdrawal.

There has been some scientific work showing zolpidem may reduce the ability of the brain to turn short-term memories into long term memories. New research in that area shows people taking Ambien may be more likely to remember negative events. This disturbing news implies that the drug can actually make post-traumatic stress disorder worse. Studies in rats found Zolpidem caused weight gain around the abdomen (visceral fat) and to move around less. Interestingly, the rats seemed to show more axiety when on the drug. When the drug was taken away the rats lost weight and became less anxious.

I once took some ambien with friends and i still dont have many memories of what happened but i do remember being trapped in a dark basement and seeing complex machinery as far as the eye could see. The machines were are all working but the layout didnt make sense. I also saw these fractal like ''tube'' things forming on top of everything filling up the room. A second time i did Ambien by myself. I had a bottle of 30 pills. I took 2 and dont remember anything from that night. I noticed in the morning all of the pills were gone ''vaguely remember taking all of them''. Luckily i never left my bed room. Compulsive redosing is a thing with this stuff. Be careful.

i was given ambien when i was 2 days into no sleep due to xanax withdrawal and was losing my mind. it was a bad idea. it gave me the most odd/intense/vivid hallucinations i've ever had. so don't let the doc give you ambien if you're trying to quit benzos and just want to get some sleep. lamictal is what finally let me get some sleep and come back to the real world.

Zolpidem is scary for recreational use, imagine taking a benzodiazapine but with much greater disinhibition and mental + physical impairment. Everytime ive done it i always end up taking at least 100mg bc the disinhibition leads me to wanting to do more and i also tend to want to drink alcohol while on it. I always end up in stupid situations where i could have hurt myself and others or gotten arrested. Benzos make me do stupid shit but its nowhere near as bad as ambien and i tend to not redose with benzos which is something that happenes everytime i take zolpidem. I have gotten visuals but its not something i really trip from its just brighter colors and extremely blurry vision. I dont think ill ever touch ambien again because the effects are not that euphoric to justify how stupid it makes me

It takes at least. 20 mg (2 pills) to work for me, nothing is as effective as the short acting barbiturates (Seconal, Nembutal, Amytal, Tuinal) but these are now nearly impossible to get.

I have vivid, lucid hallucinations while on moderate doses of this. Including people having dinner with us. Even the next day I see people out of the corner of my eye. This can be disturbing.

I took 10mg of this thinking it was Valium and got bad auditory and visual hallucinations. I was trying to fall asleep and I remember hearing tons of voices talking loudly, so I sat up out of bed and yelling "shut up" and then realized there was nobody there which really freaked me out. (This part isn't smart) but I was at a friends house when I took this, so at 4 am after having constant auditory hallucinations I decided to leave. As I was getting in my car, I looked in the window of the house and saw two ghost/phantom looking things morphing around and floating. Scary drug would not take again.

I was once known to eat these things three, four, all the way up to nine at a time. I would watch the stars moving across the sky but they would reset every time I blinked. I drove my buddy's Vette pretty aggressively. I organized a nighttime field trip to look at a comet (don't remember which one) through the telescope and asked the driver on the way where we were going.

Once I took 20 mg Zolpidem and stayed awake after it kicked in i apparently went in to my bathroom and had a full on conversation with my shampoo bottles for over 4 hours my mom told me the day after I barely remembered anything lol another one was when I had taken the same dose and I ended up seeing 3 heads instead of 1 when looking at my friend and then I started crying because my furniture didn’t comfort me and I wanted their affection.. Zolpidem / Ambien is seriously messed up but kinda hilarious at the same time as well

This stuff to me is garbage!! It gives me the most insane anxiety attacks a person could possibly have. I even tried taking it with Ativan, again, absolutely no sleep. Talked with my Dr about it and she said well there's nothing more I can give you. Erm...how about let me try a different sleep aid? I'm 36 and have never had a prescription wrote for me. Zero sleep is bogus. I think its also responsible for giving me intense body jerks. If I close my eyes and try to sleep, I'll get a vicious jerk somewhere on my body.

Zolpidem gives me headaches wich sucks but my doctor won't give me my valium. Why I don't know but, I have major memory problems and it makes it worse. It's that or no sleep. I can't win .

there are other alternatives than Valium. Quviviq has a good profile, though not for everyone. It’s expensive (your doctor might be okay with that ), and maybe worth a try.

I've been on it for almost one year now, and interestingly I didn't experience one bit of euphoria. Has anyone experienced euphoria on this medication? I suppose it's just heresy. And the hypnotic effects wear off very soon. Often I wake up after 3 hours and not able to fall asleep again. In my view, for people with full-on insomnia, it's not such an effective medicine. It's just weak.

I've experienced euphoria, but very mild. When I abused the drug in the past, I would experience deliriant effects, ie, talking to people who aren't there. I once was convinced that my brother got trapped in a video game and almost had a psychotic breakdown. If not for the short half-life, I probably would have been hospitalized.

When I first was using it I would still try to stay awake and get really high. Then I would add some alcohol (not recommended), then I'd do some crazy stuff. Then I added alcohol and peanut butter sandwiches. I don't know what the peanut butter sandwich did, but it made the Ambien, Alcohol mix more crazy. I have used Zoplicone and it works really good and lasts longer. But I don't know why they don't have it in the US.

My husband is addicted after 3 years of every day use in very large doses. He also drinks every night and mixes them both. At times I stay awake to make sure he is breathing it's ruined our marriage. He's lost his job because he would stay up all night binging on ambient and beer so he didn't make it in to work quite frequently. I don't know how to handle it because he feels he has no problems with the drug and it's just a sleeping pill.

I have been rx'd this before. Valerian root works better. Fresh Valeria. Ambien puts you to sleep in 10 minutes. But typically I'd wake up in the middle of the night as soon as it wore off I would wake up. Its not for me. Everyone should try Valeria (GOOD VALERIA! NOT CRAP) HOW TO TELL I have no idea. You can't hardly think about anything else because you have this looping thought. It repeats over and over and over. It almost feels like someone else is taking over control of your brain. It's pretty scary. Not really profound at all. LSD can induce this as well. I imagine it's much more frightening in an LSD trip.

Trazodone gave me an AWFUL stuffed up nose. Sounds crazy! But it's a thing lol. It was absolute misery...it made me tired for sure, but couldn't because I couldn't breath. Its unlike any kind of snuff nose you've ever had! Lol. No exaggeration. But obviously this doesn't affect everyone in that way. Its simply one of the possible side effects. Trazodone I'd say is safer than ambien as far as dependency and the amnesia. So if it works for you, I'd stick with it!

After my daughters death 4 years ago, I have not been able to go to sleep on my own. This drug has given me peace and the ability to get a good nights rest. The first time I took it has been the most beautiful, intense experience I ever had. I can speak for the anterograde amnesia. I was training to be a nurse(RN) and using it to go to sleep early so I could train in the ICU at 6:30 AM. The amount of short term memory loss astounded me, having to remember lots of highly technical information that early in the AM. It must have still been affecting memory as late as the next morning. I almost flunked the practical examinations due to strange - at least to me - profound loss of memory of things that were told to me one minute and needed to be regurgitated the next. I just refused to admit to myself it was the Ambien that was doing it. Somehow, I made it through, just passing. It was embarrassing, as it I hadn't been paying attention to the instructors. I learned a good lesson. On a latter occasion, when I didn't have to learn anything new, I found that after a few nights I experienced hangover that felt like I had the flu. Ewww. I just quit taking it altogether and take a benzodiazepine(
