I learned that when using multiband compression, it sounds better to me, if you take the mix knob and move it to 50% for what they call parallel compression (I think). That way when you turn up the gain you get both a compressed sound and your uncompressed sound at the same time. I hope this helps, give it a whirl see what you think.
