I share my experiences while planting a 3 Sisters Garden in Tucson Arizona, Zone 9. In this video I show how I amended and prepared my mostly clay soil. I begin with treating the soil with gypsum to improve flocculation. I also add soil sulphur to help balance our slightly alkaline soil. I use composted cattle manure and alfalfa pellets to add organic materials. Once done I cover everything over with straw to trap and hold moisture.

Follow me as I learn to garden, preserve food, grow a food forest, learn aquaponics, demonstrate delicious recipes, all while making a million mistakes along the way!
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. I’m not a professional anything. Just an amateur gardener with a quarter of an acre to work with. Please consult with a master gardener or a local extension program in your area for proper gardening advice.

Some great prep work getting done over there. Some long term fixes and adds as well. Soon that spot will be thriving with 3 sisters plants. Thanks for the share!

Thanks you two! The corn is already up and it won’t be long before the beans are planted in it too.

So fun! We're sort of doing a three sisters planting this year as well! lol, I used to pack my sedan too. My Trax actually has less room! 🤣 Great work! Those are going to be very happy plants!

Thanks! If you do a video on it I’ll watch it for sure. I’m totally winging it over here and always love watching the videos made by more experienced gardeners like you. Lol I really need a truck!

@@tucsonurbangardening2701 Definitely! I would be happy to share a video on it. My corn is ready for me to put the beans in the ground anyway! 😁 Then I can explain why it's "sort of" three sisters, lol! I've planted them all together before but I haven't grown pole beans up the stalks before so this will be somewhat new for both of us!

We have really bad clay soil too! Compost is our magic ingredient

I love compost and can’t get enough of it. I top dress the beds regularly once they’re established. I only treat the soil like this once once with the gypsum. The gypsum just jumpstarts the drainage while the soil life gets started.

Had to pause to tell you how much I love your wood barrier! I have some Mesquite in the yard that i have been considering doing that with myself. I am going to for sure now!

Thanks! The ground sort of slopes back toward the bed from the house and I was afraid heavy rain might move the mulch. So far the logs helped to keep it all in place no matter how hard it’s rained.

@@tucsonurbangardening2701 The good thing about woodchips is that rain and wind have almost no effect on them. They reek havoc on dirt, but woodchips stay where they belong! I really just like the way they look, and, of course, that they are good for fungi!

That’s been my experience as well. I think the yard looks great with them. Plus they allow me to to all sorts of cool stuff with the watershed. You wouldn’t believe what it looks like underneath them. There are earthworks and a cistern/catchment that’s knee deep on me.
