They put him in a transforming Vic viper. That's from Gradius originally(except for the transforming part) so they basically turned him into a reference to another Konami series.

True. However, there has been a two-year timeskip, so Leo's balls did eventually start to drop, along with him becoming much more confident as a leader, and became significantly more skilled as a runner (literally was at a standstill with Dingo, despite him piloting a practically-inferior orbital frame compared to the Jehuty, until ADA ended the fight). But hey, Dingo is cool too. No hate on the chad.
