This exhibit was designed to fail, but theres actually a very import reason why. Let’s take a look at some of the key design features, the careful planning and overall outcome of this impressive habitat.
All personal footage of Sun Bear Heights filmed at Paradise Wildlife Park. www.pwpark.com
Additional footage used with permission from the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. A special thanks to Dr Wong for taking the time to talk to me.
“The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) is a sun bear rescue and rehabilitation facility being developed in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.
Malayan sun bears are the smallest bears in the world and are only found in Southeast Asia. These bears continue to be threatened by forest degradation, illegal hunting for bear parts and poaching to obtain young cubs for pet trade. The results of these threats has caused young sun bears found to be living in unnatural captive conditions in Sabah, with no access to outdoor areas.
There are currently 44 rescued ex-captive sun bears residing at the BSBCC. The facility includes large forest enclosures to provide a natural environment suited to the needs and welfare of the sun bears and facilitate their rehabilitation back into the wild.
In 2014, the Centre opens to the public. Visitors can learn about sun bears and observe them in their natural habitat.”

I wasn't sure where you were going based on the title, but I agree completely with what you said in this video, definitely important considerations any time a zoo is dealing with mixed-species set-ups (even if with species that have been mixed many times before).

Love this concept. I have been going to the Smithsonian Zoo my whole life and their wolf and red panda habitats have failed me in the sense that I have never ever ever seen them. If they had planned for failure there would be some kind of view into their indoor area, or at the very least a live camera view. No I just have to keep going and keep hoping I’m lucky.

Camera could be a good idea! But as for view indoors, while there are some ways this could work, one way glass, efficient sound proofing. It’s important to offer animals the option to remove themselves from view. It’s a tricky one for habitat design. For the animals, those exhibits may offer them perfect habitats, simply not in view of the public. But yes, sometimes having a lot of patience is how you end up seeing some species!

While I like the idea of multi-species exhibits in general, I'm not so sure about housing three carnivore species together.

There’s certainly risks, although there are similar difficulties introducing individuals of the same species. The knowledge and experience of keepers on site will allow for proper judgements to be made, and the exhibit design will allow for long term housing if it’s deemed unworkable.

Is this from the alternate reality where Callum's Corner became a zoologist?

Yeah it definitely is! Was cool to hear about all the thought processes in place behind the design

Also, can you make a video related to birds?

They’re on their way! Trying to find a good angle. You’ve seen I’m working out how to do all this. I have a long list of “intentions” and “goals” about what I want to share/promote. And balance that with reaching people in an engaging way. I’m aware of the biases of zoo marketing towards mammals and it’s backed by social science, for the public’s “preference” for mammals. But I’m getting there! Got a few birds and reptiles in the works! Always appreciate your support!

Glad you enjoyed the video! I’m working on how best to title and engage viewers with intriguing videos, hence focusing on how it was designed with failure in mind, I appreciate your comment, all helps with improving on my next video!

@@zooblether The habitat was designed with failure in mind, it was not designed 'to fail', those are two very different things - hence why the title was clickbait.
