This is my review on the ever popular Zoo-Med Turtle Dock. Hopefully it'll give you potential buyers some more insight on whether or not to buy it. For those who already have one then this can be used for reference.

Personal Rating:4/10
My main issue with this product is that it isn't turtle proof. Meaning that a turtle will destroy this product with ease if it realizes it's something fun to gnaw on.
I'm not the end all turtle expert but I have been in the hobby for a significant part of my life. These videos are a way for me to share my knowledge with the world.

My RES always loves when she can go behind it and drive me crazy. However I've had the same dock for years now and it seems to be holding up fine. The only thing that I need to do is get replacement suction cups now and again.

Im surprised at all the negative comments, i have a res and a ybs, they have had the same dock for 4 years. Works perfectly over here!

its a pretty good dock I had no trouble except the suction cups are hard as hell to put on you can maybe break it by trying to put them on.

thinking of getting one of these for my crab tank as it lets me keep them in deeper water with some long leafed plants and fish, thanks for the review except for pictures it was hard to find some good information on this thing one question though, you say its foam, does that mean it'll be easy to cut to size with just a knife?

I found that sun drying the dock got rid of lots of algae when I sun dried it for 2 hours it was pretty much gone

I have the small version of this. It couldn't even hold up my 4 inch turtle. It could when he was younger, but after about 4 years it sank him. So as a quick fix, I took some foam, not regular foam though its very plastic like and almost clear. And I drilled four holes, one in each corner, and one in the corners just were the ramp starts to slope, and I tied it on really tight with fishing line. I've had it that way a couple of months and its still holding up very well.

well i have a pond with my res in it in my red ear slider usually bask more then he swim so what is it like housing a female res because i have all males in one painted turtle in my painted turtle doesn't grow much

hey my red ear slider baby turtle was fine when i got him, but just recently there are white spots spearing on the top of his shell, it is slowly spreading too! i thought it was fungus as first, but when i tried rubing it off, or giving her a salt bath, it didnt do anything. i also heard that this could be mineral build up, and that it will fall off at its next shed? :S is this true? i need help please and thanks!

@mikeyagubyan It's a floating platform that allows turtles to climb and rest on to dry themselves. This one is a popular commercial version of that. You can use driftwood or rocks but this one floats on water and auto adjusts to the water level.

I had one... But I had to get a new one because my old one got really dirty... I went to petsmart to get one and when I took it out of the box it was black with some bright green and orange on it. I looked everywhere and it seems like I'm the only one who has one like this? Any answer?

mine done the same thing. I just took the dock out yesterdae but now I dont know what i am going to use as a turtle docks.

NICE!!! 90g I bet they love that are you gonna make a vid of the new tank? How is the snapper did you move him into the old slider tank? If you get a chance try and catch how you made your basking area

@emostars71 Thanks the turtles are fine, I just upgraded my sliders to a 90 gallon tank and I'm in the process of making an above tank basking area for them.

my dock is getting destroyed by algae. At first It was easy to clean but it got worst as time went by, now it's extremely difficult to take out the algae I think Im might have to try something else.

SO MY TURTLE GOES UNDER THE BARS AND STAYS THERE I THOUGHT HE WAS STUCK BUT WHEN I LET HIM LOOSE HE WENT BACK UNDER THERE..AND KEPT DOING IT! IM WAITING FOR THE GNAWING TO START.

Nice re-view on the oh so popualr turtle dock like you mentioned unless someone is crafty and can make a basking area this is the one that is so popular I know there I guess cause it is eay to put together and depending on the shop you go to usually the only basking dock you see and prices always very this one shop I go to for for large one it is $22 so not bad...BTw nice to see a vid it has been awhile how are your turtles?

Hey boneyman... I got the dock before I watched this vid so I'm not complaining... my turtle thinks he is an interior decorator and keeps ripping it off the glass and flipping it over.

@PinksBitch720 I honestly don't remember. It was the largest one in the store, so I'm assuming that it's the large one. I recommend you get the largest one that will fit in your tank because your turtle is going to grow.

the small ones are definitely not strong enough for any turtle bigger than a quarter-- they can hardly hold any weight at all-- but they do work wonderfully for newts!

@seanfenrir It's not the dock, it's the suction cups. Try zip ties if you can. I changed to a homemade above tank basking area.

i bought one for my red eared slider and he did not like it keept falling off of it on the biggest sized one

@handofprogress Yep, it would be pretty easy to cut with a knife if you want but there are various sizes available so you might as well buy the right size. But if you want to cut it then thats fine as well.

@TaiWalkerG The only other commercial option that's worth trying is the "Turtle Topper". If that doesn't work for you then you may want to try building your own.

Hey. In some point you are right. Imo this dock is good for small turtles. My was fine till they get size like 10/15cm lenght. After that they start eat that foam dock. So... now I made proper dock area...

@YoUlLgAgInThEmOrNiNg That's normal for turtles to do that. Mine didn't do it but I see turtles at the pet store do it all the time. Hopefully your turtles don't start gnawing or else you'll have to remove the dock.

I have a large red eared slider about 6 inches across is the large Zoo-Med Turtle Dock big enough for that size? or am I better of making my own dock?

he is says that 6 inches is the largest he would recommend for the largest basking dock in the video...did you watch the video?

Foam = do not buy. A growing turtle will always destroy it. I know this video is from forever ago, but do you have a video on how you made your own dock?

@Funsliders It's made of some sort of styrofoam. If your turtle bites it it'll easily shred it which is why I give it such a low rating.

After a while, turtles will start trying to eat it. Mine has been doing that lately, and it's a common issue with his brand. I have to replace it anyway since it's too small.

Not all RES are aggressive but in general they are more aggressive than many other species.

I got it and the suction cups were crappy. I replaced it with another brand that was just as crappy :/ why are docks so CRAPPY!?

I bought this a while back and it didn't come with the suction cups so I had to resort to taping the little hooks to the top of the tank. Mine has gotten so covered with algae even when scrubbing I end up just scribbing away foam. It's a nice dock but definitely not worth what I paid for it.

My turtle has now turned this into a chew toy and eats the end result. I'm in need of a new dock as soon as possible as I'm afraid of it impacting her insides.

Do not buy this for 2 main reasons: 1. On the bottom, there is a grey part that gets so grimey for some reason. It is not because waste from the tank, it is because of the material from the dock coming out. 2. The material is very fragile after being in water for a while and i found my turtle biting and eating it !!

Lol you gave it a bad rating because your turtle ate it. How is that the manufacturers fault? How does your turtle eating the dock make the dock an absolute disaster? your turtle destroyed it. That doesn't mean it's poor quality on the manufacturers end.
