Zoom H4n Pro Handy Recorder

-----------------------------
Zoom recently updated their very popular H4n Handy Recorder with the H4n Pro. So what’s different on the new Pro version? Let’s take a look and a listen!
This entire episode was recorded with the Zoom H4n Pro and RØDE NTG2 Shotgun microphone outdoors on a summer evening. There is some ambient noise. But don’t worry, we also have a few clips in my studio where there is very little ambient noise. All of the audio was normalized to -24 LUFS and no other processing was applied - no noise reduction, EQ, compression, or anything else.
If you’d like to improve your sound recording skills for film, please have a look at our Sound Recording for Video course over at school.learnlig...

The sound quality in this windy outdoor recording is too good
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
Yes, I used a Rycote Cyclone wind cover which makes it sound like a studio recording. For a narrative piece, I would also record some wind as a backing track to make it more realistic. The reason to use the wind cover is to prevent the wind from blowing across the microphone capsule and distorting the sound.
@JimmyDevere
@JimmyDevere 7 лет назад
Do you have a link or model for the cyclone? I just did a quick search and what popped up was +$500! Twice as much as the mic! Is that what you are using? If so, are there any other lower cost alternatives you might recommend for the Rode NTG2? Thanks!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
Hi Jimmy, There are, of course, less expensive options but they are not as effective. Could still perhaps do the job in wind that is not as extreme: amzn.to/2gOfUfR RODE also makes a blimp style cover that is priced at $299: bhpho.to/2z46Rym

I never understood why the combination of the H4n and the NTG-2 became so popular. I bought them too 4 yrs ago because everybody seemed to use them. I was absolutely disappointed. If you don't use a pre-amp it combines the weak points of both items: the pre-amps of the Zooms are quite crappy and the sensitivity of the NTG-2 is very low (15.00mV @ 94 dB SPL). The sound of the NTG-2 is good but from my experience the maximum usable distance it about 2ft from your talent because of this low sensitivity. If you are more distant you have to push the H4n into a lot of noise. I sold both and went for a Roland R26 with a Sennheiser ME-66. I shot hundreds of interviews and statements with, sometimes I even use it as on camera mic. I never did it regret it for a second.

I like the sound of the H4N Pro. Sounds about as harsh as the H5. Though I love the H6 cause of the 6 mike thing, I finally heard my frend Neal Ewers's demo of the H5 and dude the Rode NT1-A was real epic. I was sold. I even loved the H5 mikes. So this 1 is cool. A little less harsh but love the brightness. Neal didn't really care for the H5 built ins. I will agree that the H6 ones are liss hissy for floor. But I do love the brightness of the h5. Disitions, disitions. Which to choose. lol Yeah this is an epic recorder.

Hi, I have a couple of questions, first I'd like to give you somewhat of a backstory. I don't have any experience with sound recording but I'm looking for the best handheld recorder to use for filmmaking (animation) purposes, I'd like to record sound effects, ambience sound, nature recordings and voice recording. I've done research and quickly found the Zoom H2n, then found the Zoom H4n, and now the Zoom H4n pro. These are the recorders I can afford. Now I understand the main difference between the H2n and H4n are options and the H4n pro is a greatly improved version. I would like the option to be able to mount it to my DSLR so I think that means scrapping the Zoom H2n, right? The H4n and pro version have XLR inputs so you can use an external mic with it. My questions about these are: Basically how this works. What is the role of the Zoom h4n pro in this, why would you use an external mic with it? What is the purpose of using an external mic, on a Zoom h4n pro, on a DSLR? I've watched many reviews, and the H4n pro seems like the best option out of these with more options for the future.. but I would basically like a bit more information and confirmation as to how this all works, from someone with experience before I make the purchase.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
Hi EvilYakuza, thanks for the question. The most important thing to getting high quality sound is to get the microphone close to the sound source. That's why camera microphones, whether built-in to the camera or mounted on top, do not generally produce the best results. Another factor is the quality of the microphone and the other circuitry that amplifies the sound and converts it to digital. In cameras, these are not usually very high quality. That's where the H4n Pro comes in. It is better on each of these than most camera microphones. So I would say first priority is to get a decent microphone closer to the sound source. For dialogue which is what I record in most cases, I use this method with a RODE VideoMic Pro into a recorder or even into the camera: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TUEmQBZKoBs.html Then if you really want to improve your sound, a recorder with a high quality XLR based microphone would be the next step. There's a ton of information scattered throughout my playlist: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-veD8BVXV3Ls.html Best wishes!

I don't have a stereo mic available, or two suitable mics for manual X, XY or similar setup. I only have a stereo mic in a DSLR or in the original H4N. If doing ambient sound, I'd like it to be stereo (although it has to approximately match direction of camera, in case it's taken async to video). As the H4N has some rather unimpressive preamps, but does have a set of stereo mics, would it be possible, and a good idea, to somehow use those with an available MixPre (better preamps)? How would you hook it up? Other tips for recording background ambience? Thanks.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 года назад
Hi Henrik, Unfortunately, I don't know how to take the H4n's mics and feed them directly through better preamps since they are wired in to the H4n. You could, however, potentially use a similar XY mic array into the Zoom F series recorders, but I think the preamp is in the mic module so that would still get you the same results. You might consider using a stereo microphone like the RODE NT4.

Hey, Curtis. Thanks so much for this high quality review. Always enjoy your content. Question: Can I record the audio using an XLR mic to both my DSLR and the Zoom H4n Pro simultaneously so I have audio on both my media card for my camera and the Zoom? Also, I have a LUMIX G7 and want to monitor the audio with headphones. Can I use a line splitter so I can run audio to the camera from the Zoom and to headphones? Any insight and expertise would be greatly appreciated.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
Hi, Yes, you can run the audio out of the zoom to camera. You'll need to experiment with your particular camera as that sometimes requires a special attenuation cable like this: bhpho.to/2m90KTL You'll want to test without the special cable first just to confirm (this is not something I have done personally). Yes, you could also use a splitter to monitor. There is a risk that will degrade the audio signal going to the camera so it is a tradeoff. For the scenario you outline, the Tascam DR-60DmkII may be a better option as it does not require the attenuation cable and has a separate headphone jack. I reviewed that over here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TRoIMPHS91U.html

While I haven't done a formal test to compare these two, they're quite similar based on my experience. Subjectively, I usually think of the Tascam preamps as having a cleaner sound and the Zooms have a slightly warmer sound but the difference is really subtle. Also, the DR-70D actually does have a set of built-in mics but I probably wouldn't rely on them aside for capturing the slate clap.

@curtisjudd 3 года назад
Hi David, Either the H6 or 70D can do the job. The H6 has a better 3.5mm input but I prefer the XLR inputs on the 70D. The H6 can also be a USB audio interface if you need that. And the H6 also has the in-built stereo mics if you ever need to record ambient sound. In short, there are tradeoffs and they each have their own advantages and disadvantages. I did most of my earlier work on a Tascam and don't have any regrets.

@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
Sit-down interviews that are longer or the type where you walk up to someone and quickly interview them? If you go with two lavalier mics, you might find an audio adapter to be a better option because many of them have two 3.5mm mic inputs whereas most recorders, including the Zoom H series recorders only have one 3.5mm input. There aren't as many XLR based lavalier mics on the market. If the interview will be more like a newscast, a dynamic reporter's mic might be a better option. Let me know which direction you're headed and we can get some recommendations together for you.
@interactbiz2
@interactbiz2 7 лет назад
Most often, it will involve short sit-downs but not in a studio setting, maybe in offices or relatively quiet public spaces. Other times, it might involve talking with someone in his/her work place with a bit of movement and ambient noise. Pinning a lavalier on someone seems to allow them to behave more naturally than when they have to worry about microphone positioning and are always aware of being recorded.

My question is this: Can I send audio from the H4nPro (I just ordered from B&H - arriving tomorrow) directly into my Sony HDR AX-700 camcorder. I record music recitals by graduate students at Stony Brook University. Currently, I place the old H4n (after 10 years, it's not 100% reliable) in the 2nd row of the recital hall, and operate my camcorder from the fourth row. Because I don't use any additional microphone, the audio recorder has to be close to the stage and I have to be farther away for video. After I edit the video, I combine them in iMovie. That cable you show connecting the H4n Pro to a camera is short, five inches or so. Is it possible to use a longer cable, maybe 20 feet? If so, what cable? Thank you for your video on the H4n Pro. It is basically a "consumer line level headphone output." So you can turn it down to work with a microphone input.

When I'm plugin the external alimentation I have 50Hz +15-18dB background noise. Can you have a check by your side on Zoom products with external alim ? hello curtis i have one begginer question :) when you use an external recoder like the ZOOM H1 with a video mike pro boom mike style , if you then feed the line out to your dslr , will you have the exact same sound quality on the dslr recording compare to the zoom sound ? because i synch video and sound in post so i just wondering if im wasting my time. Thanks a lot
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 8 лет назад
+Slyou333 no, the DSLR recording will be 16 bit where the H1 can be 24 bit. That may or may not make a difference for many people. Also, different inputs sound different and that is more likely to make a practical difference that people can hear. I usually do not use DSLRs or mirrorless cameras to record quality audio.

Which is an all around good recording device, for wedding ceremonies, theatrical plays, etc. and in need to mount on a dslr or mirrorless camera or even videocamera... I can understand that all of them have their strengths and weaknesses, but I was thinking something like the Tascam dr44... better built than dr40, (don't know about the Zoom H4n Pro) and it takes 4 batteries (long continuous recording time) and the dual (safe track -12db) recording seems a good idea. Depends on the budget. I have not tested the DR-44 but it is one of their newer recorders and the others in the same age category are pretty good. I have heard that the H4n can have issues taking a feed from sound boards but have not confirmed that personally. I’d probably opt for the Tascam.

I currently record my lav with the Tascam DR-05. But I got a gift card to B&H and am thinking of getting a 2nd recorder for doing video with 2 people. Would it be worth it to upgrade to something like the H4N Pro for the 2nd recorder? Or the H5? Or do you think I should upgrade to the Tascam DR-40? Or is there something better in that affordable range? Or should I just get a 2nd DR-05? Lol. Hard to pick. I know I can spend $600~$800 and get a more professional one but this is for RU-vid and small productions only so I was hoping $250 or under. Would appreciate any input you have. I don't mind spending a bit more for a significant improvement over the DR-05, but don't want to just waste money either. The sound is plenty good for soloing, but I find that if I record myself playing along with a CD or record, the camera equalizes the sound, so that I wind up playing over the singer. Great one, Curtis! I know this is old and I apparently saw it cause it shows that I had already given the vid a thumbs up but I came back to try and answer another question. The output from the line out to DSLR. Typically, famously, with the H4n, you needed a cable that attenuated the line level. A whole cottage industry was born with people making these cables lol. So I'm wondering, does the H4n Pro have an attenuation setting in it's menu to deal with this? They definitely market it now as being able to plug into a DSLR but I'm wondering what changed? I think in some cases, DSLR's changed too and that some now even detect if they are getting line or mic level inputs but that might not be correct. I couldn't track down a specific answer via the manual so I'm wondering if you noticed anything in the menu. Thanks! I'm definitely going to have to get one of these in for review. I was scarred enough from the H4n that I didn't give this one much of a look plus we already had the H5 so it was a little bit of a weird release. But I can see some value in it, mostly its price point.

There is one thing in the menu that confuses me though and I haven't really found an answer online. When using a shotgun mic like the Rode NTG3 for booming dialogue what should I select in the "REC MODE" menu? "Multi file" or "Stereo File"? Or does it even matter? I know it's a mono mic so I thought multi would be the right option but then I can only record up to 48khz/24 bit even if it's only one mic plugged in. In stereo mode it let's me go up to 96khz but then I also only have a audio on the left. I know I can fix that in post but it still doesn't feel right. @@curtisjudd Others have suggested that but what I''m trying to accomplish is that the H4n PRO is stationary set to 120 degrees and it picks up the planes going by to get separate sounds (Doppler Effect) on the two front channels while having the Remote Mics the pilots ware fed into the NO 3 & 4 channel so to pick up their conversations as the fly. What I've done is just is put the camera and the H4n Pro in record and don't attempt to video each pass seperately and just cut out the unnecessary parts like I used to when you loaded one big 1 hour long clip to the time line, back when we were still using TAPE. Thanks I do watch most of your videos.

My only complain with my H4N is that it can't handle line level signals coming from a mixer output. We have to use an attenuator to cut -30dB to the incoming signal.

Can these be used as a boom mic for camera? Or is it better to go with a dedicated mic like the Shure VP83?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 лет назад
I'd probably opt for a dedicated mic but that's a personal preference. The in-build microphone on the H series recorders are cardioid which is not as focused as most shotgun microphones. When recording dialogue for video, you usually want a more focused microphone like a shotgun. Good luck!

Hi Curtis. Great review. When, if ever, would you use the built in mic to record your sound? I just got mine with that use in mind, but all the vids I see speak about a connecting a shot gun or lav mic. So is it wrong to use the built in mics?

Hi Andrew, This was recorded with a RODE NTG2 in a Rycote Cyclone wind cover. It does an amazing job at managing wind. Of course it was all recorded to the H4n Pro. Yes, I definitely had some sync issues here. Been fighting with the newest version of Premiere. Sorry for that. :(

Ah the NT1-A. That's the mike Neal used. I missed the 1 last time. Say have you ever used an NT2-A? I'm trying to figure out which would be more epic. I know with a Sound Devices the NT1-A is epic but Neal doesn't have an NT2-A. One of the cool things about the 2 is that it is 1 of those multy pattern mikes. I just wander if it is any clearer or anything like that compared to the 1. Yes I've heard some music vids on youtube but I've not heard it on a Sound Devices recorder. Or heck even the USB Pre2 audio interface whichis I think anyways the most affordable thing from them. Me wants one. It's got the same guts as a 744-T. Me loves the 44-T. That thing's 1 epic recorder. the 88 is just more epic cause you could hook up 8 mikes and do 7.1 surround. Well obviously you'd have to mix the files so so much for Sound Forge Pro, because it is multy channel but not track. In other words and that's why I asked about the F8 poley wav file, if you have an 8 channel file it'll open it and play it as 7.1 and you can save it like that. You could even tab threw each 1 and see what's on it. But it can't make a 7.1 out of many files. if like the F8 the 788-T could be used as a sound card now you're in business. Just tell SF Pro to record an 8 channel file and bam! There ya have it. 7.1 in glorious Sound Devices quality.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 8 лет назад
+MrHamit64 I have not used the NT2A but it sounded good in the samples I've heard. Quite similar to the 1A. As for 7.1, I believe that films with 7.1 are often recorded in mono, then mixed to 7.1 with ProTools. Adobe Audition can do at least 5.1 as well. There may be a few scenes where the recording is actually surround but many are mixed from mono or stereo recordings into surround.

Hello, I am a voice-over . I bought a Rode nt1a a while ago, I had a Zoom H4n, I tried to work with them together. But zoom and rode maybe are not couple be good to record. I could not control the volume level on record. I made record level down but still got the top-level record. I really don't understand why. when I began to record everything seems fine but after than increase volume level. I was in the sound booth, I could not back away as much as I need. Always ıt was high-level recording, I made low on record program, which uses adobe audition . It was not changed record. May you help me, how shall I do? How shall I set up a mixer or zoom level to record normal level .?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 года назад
Hi Hilal, what did you set the input level to when recording with the NT1A? It will probably need to be somewhere around 30 or 40, I would guess. You should adjust the input level with the rocker switch on the side of the H4n until the meters on the screen hit about -12dB max. Best wishes!

Some people are saying that the preamps are in fact more sensitive than "cleaner", so they are not the same quality as the ones available on the H5 and H6. The same people say that the preamps are slightly better on the H4n Pro than they are on the H4n, but not as good as expected. Do you have any opinion about it? By the way, thank you very much for this video!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
Hi Rinaldo, from a subjective point of view, the preamps on the H4n Pro seemed as clean as the H6 with the condenser mics I tried with both of them. The H6 technically can provide 3.5dB additional gain over wha the H4n Pro can provide. With condenser mics (such as shotgun mics) that doesn't make a difference I could detect. The difference will mostly be with dynamic microphones or other mics which require a larger amount of gain when you have to push the preamp to higher gain settings.
