Don't let choppy audio ruin your online music lessons or fitness classes. If you are using Zoom Conference Software to stream any kind of live music - or voice and music - then you need to know how to optimise the audio, and change the default audio settings so that your audio stream sounds as good as possible.

Zoom is a GREAT platform for teaching and video conferencing. But Zoom is NOT suitable for online music collaboration in real time. Here are some links that you might find helpful if that is your goal.

Thank you. Exactly what I was looking for. This is one of the most informative videos on a technical subject I have seen in a long time. Our band is getting antsy as we have not been able to jam or play together for some time now. We have bantered around the idea of having a Zoom jam, but keep coming up with "what ifs' and other possible problems before we even try. Haven't tried your steps yet as I've just watched the video, but if the accuracy of your instructions are up to the same quality as your presentation, I'm confident that we have the answer we were looking for. JamKazam is a good shot for jamming as well. The interface is really bad but I got it working with a friend and the latency is hardly noticeable

Absolutely brilliant, have been trying to sort this problem of playing my guitar over Zoom sounding like its out of phase/ slightly distorted for quite a while without any success, until by chance I found your video. Have spoken to various people who use Zoom, looked at various videos and also asked for an answer on a couple of websites and no one has come up with an answer. So a big thank you, as just tried it with your settings to my friend over Zoom and all nice and clear sounding, including my singing along at the same time! Thank you, June, and you have my likes and support. We are in the planning stages of doing a concert online in honour of my friend who passed away much too early. He had many friends and he is unique. You may notice that I always keep him in the present tense because to me, he is here. He is a singer and he is missed by everyone. When the concert is done, I will share it with you and others. Your technical prowess is what I needed. In the past, I did a lot of mixing in the analog era, so I am now back researching what I need to do this right; mixing boards, equalizers, streaming, and editing software, the proper mics to get the best sound, etc. So I will be following you and encouraging many others to do the same. It's been a long time since I got back to my very first and enduing love - music. I'm at a stage of rediscovery, and if COVID19 did anything, it made me re-evaluate my life, and implant that life is indeed short, that being too busy to enjoy life is an excuse, and it truly is love and passion that bring others real joy and true meaning. I don't often write on posts, yet the urge was there to do this. Thank you for your professionalism and knowledge which I am certain has inspired many others. Thank you again. I just began following you on Facebook and Twitter as well. :)

I wish I had seen this a few months ago. It's the easiest video to follow yet and it will likely improve the quality of our online Zoom music lessons. We are going to continue them through the month of September because parents are worried about the covid impact of their children returning to school. They don't want to add to their contact bubble yet with extra curricular contacts. It may well be a covid year of online instruction. Thank you so much!!

Open Zoom app. Open settings inside of the app. Tap on meetings to get settings for meetings. Scroll down a ways and look for a switch to turn on “use original Sound.”

in the user/meeting settings on the website there is as well the "enable stereo" to tick otherwise the sound stays in mono.

Yep. I found the stereo setting kept disappearing, then realised I needed to be properly signed into Zoom to see the option. Broadcasting stereo is a can of worms: the only way I could get stereo (from my keyboard for example) is to use an app like Loopback to manage audio. Some systems like Skype take the first mono input from the interface, and ignore anything else!

This helps a ton and noticed significant improvement in audio quality however it is still going in and out every 10seconds or so.

As I understand it, Zoom has problems with lag. That means that it might be difficult to use Zoom to get a bunch of remote singers/performers on the beat all at the same time. I've heard that JamKazam handles lag better. But I'm still learning.

You've given me another option to try after watching your video. Last night I tried my first Zoom /OBS lesson and the sound was very quiet and glitchy to my student. I also tried facetime on the Mac and that did the same thing. However, my iPhone worked. Thank You!

Thank you very much. The settings on your video update did the trick! My use is to zoom Dance/ballet exams to an examiner/s, sometimes on the other side of the planet. As you can imagine the music accompaniment must be just about perfect. I found the use of a mixer still makes it easier as well as having the music operated and played from a separate laptop or source. I tested with a technical person on the other side (+/- 20,000km away) , the time delay between music and voice (not latency), using a metronome with flashing light and could not see any delay. However, as you 've mentioned, the quality of the internet service/wifi is important and can be the killer. Resulting in frame dropping which becomes another problem. Luckily the video/sound sync stays aligned. Thank you again.

Hallelujah I got sound coming from my piano keyboard, microphone and my M-Audio interface going into my laptop computer.
