In this video @carlo.obrien and I compare two prime lenses (Canon RF 35mm 1.8 and EF 100mm F2.0) to a single zoom lens (Tamron 35-150mm f2.8-4.0). Hope you guys enjoy this one!

would be nice to compare 2 pictures on the same focal length (eg. 35mm), one of them made with a prime and one with a zoom. i have not really seen that in any of these prime vs zoom videos. it feels like a missed opportunity.

@Long Johnson It's not just a matter of being able to shoot in low light, it's about being able to shoot extremely shallow DOF for a different look altogether. There is a very big difference between an 85mm shot at f/1.2 and f/2.8, for example.

It depends on the persons style. Originally, I got into photography/videography to capture examples of what Should be seen. Reach, macro, wide-angle, bokeh, AF performance can lead you to select the perfect lens for your task. You can't reach with a 20mm, you can't wide-angle with 200mm. You can't have great portraits unless you smear the background out with f/1.8 and say 135mm. You can't take photos of insects or things super super small unless you have a Macro lens. You can't take a great interior or Huge building exterior w/ little room to stand back unless you are say 14mm. I got a lens for Every single purpose. I used to have cases for Each lens until I got so many I just put them all in 1 bag. I used to carry only 1 lens in a backpack but you are limited to what it does best. I have 2 gimbals for video, a slider, and a Jib. I hardly use any of them anymore. I also have many drones as you need to be able to capture in the air.

a open zoom lens like most will also expose the internal parts as they move out into open air, thats why i would prefer a closed zoom, but unfortunatly they are barely made. The 200-600 being closed zoom pulled me to the sony system as new buyer.

In my experienced, getting used prime lenses, even ones that are 10 years old, are just as good as the new ones. But zoom really suffers when you go with anything older. The exceptions in my experience (with Canon EOS R and RF adapter) is that the Canon EF 50 1.2 L is horrible on new cameras (I went with Sigma 50 1.4 instead) and the Canon EF 70-200 2.8 L is pretty much the same as their new RF version, just a bit heavier and a tiny bit slower to focus. But anything else, go new for zoom and used for prime.

I have a quick question.. how do you achieve the shallow depth of field in the first few scenes of this video.. it looks like you guys are practically 3-d? I feel like to described what to get first a little backwards by saying to shoot zooms and then move into primes. I may be an outlier, but I started on a shoe-string budget and found that primes were the more affordable choice for getting those wider apertures that made my photographs look more professional. Then, as I acquired more money, I was then able to afford the Trinity of 16-35, 24-70, and 70-200 at 2.8 that would cover most common focal lengths but still provide a nice shallow depth of field at 2.8. I can’t tell you how many hired shoots I did with just a nifty fifty 1.8 over 4 years as I saved my money for the trinity. That being said, I did really love letting friends or family use my gear and when they ask how to zoom, needing to explain that they can walk forward or back. Good video though. I enjoyed the perspective from you.

Can't go wrong with an 85mm. I also like the idea of keeping an 11mm or a 16mm in there, too. I think the best lens for first-timers is a 50mm, especially over any Zooms. Zooms are better for filming, in my opinion. For photos, primes are where its at. Be sure to do your math if you have a cropped sensor. Zooms are much more versatile if you need to constantly change focal lengths but that takes a bit more complex strategy and isn't really suitable for first-timers. I think it is better to develop an eye for one focal length at the beginning because it forces you to learn what f-stops are and how to compose properly rather than simply getting your subject in frame.

@@escooterpovaustria6699 ~ I bought a 24mm f1.4 recently, and I was SOOO excited about it! Unfortunately it was the worst buy I've ever made. . .I expected sharp, popped subjects with dreamy, creamy bokeh in the background. What I got was (even when shooting wide open at f1.4) a shot that looked as if it was taken with a 50mm at f5.6 ~ NO creamy bokeh backgrounds!!! :( I honestly think the 24mm lens is a waste of money, if like me you shoot people. If you are a landscape photographer, it might work for you. I sold mine within one week of buying it!
@escooterpovaustria6699
@escooterpovaustria6699 Год назад
@@lynettelove191 hey lynette:) happy that you ask / I try to help as much as I can. 24 1.4 must be a beast, but its not that easy to use. Things like distortion if you get close would be annoying for me. And 1 thing, only cause you buy 1.4 doesn’t mean you always use on 1.4 / this number tells only the quality of light and sometimes it just for high range people if you buy the originals. Your right, some of these people use it for landscape, but a lot for people too. But not that way you maybe you have looked for. If you really want that bokeh monster you should get a 85MM. You must only know if you always have that space. That was my problem cause i only wanted own 1 single lens where i can do all my paid jobs like event, portrait and street photography. I was already leaning more to 45-35 cause with this lens you can get the whole scene and still if you want nice bokeh you can get nearer without a big distortion. After having this one for a long time I could afford a second one that was the sigma 24-70 2.8 / I only bought it cause a videographer told me this is the GO lens for paid works. He was right but not totally. I had bokeh, but still for my option not enough, and the low light. I had big trouble at my last event cause it was light like in a cinema without light 🤣 just some spots where with lights. This made me buying a 85 1.8 It’s a great lens now for low light situations and it was close a 3rd price of that sigma. But if you have no space to stand away far enough (~3m) you are Fckd. So choose yourself and check my photos on insta :D I often used the hashtags of the focals @shotbytad 👋

Why would you think that a prime lens at x mm is any different then a zoom lens at the same focal length? Modern zoom lenses are so sharp you would have to use a magnifying glass to see any difference in a very large print. It's not like in the '70's when zoom lens were decidedly inferior. Any difference in the photos will be differences in exposure. Or maybe the lens you are comparing are not of similar quality.

You nailed my thoughts exactly when you said for beginners to buy a zoom lens and experiment with various focal lengths. Canon R6 and a 20mm 1.4 Sigma Art

Ive been a prime lens only shooter for 17 years but zooms have gotten much better recently. I sold my R6 and RF primes and switched to Sony primarily for the upcoming Tamron 35-150 f/2-2.8 Its going to be a prime lens killer, will replace 5-6 primes and have some awesome features like the focus set button. Using the Tamron 70-180 f/2.8 right now and love it.

That explains a lot actually. I've tried a lot of older, used and adapted lenses from EF to RF for the R and R7, and the fixed ones seem to hold up much better. My favourites being the Sigma 50 1.4 and the Canon 100 Macro. The only zoom lens that held up to a 30MP+ camera that I tried was the 70-200 f2.8, which is known as one of the best Canon lenses, and for good reason. I was really surprised that the Canon EF 50 1.2 was one of the worst lenses I tried with the RF adapter, and that little tiny lens had so much praise when it came out. That's why I love having an in-person store that sells used gear, so I could trade things in and try out lenses on my own camera in person, and get a feel for what it's like before buying it. My dad sticks to Canon L series everything, but they're not always the best choice in my opinion when Sigma, Tamron, and others make great quality lenses. The only downside to me sticking with the R series is that they all need the adapter. But that came with my camera, so it's no big deal to me, as long as I know where it is (usually I keep it on my 50, and swap it as needed).

While the zoom lenses have indeed gotten much better, the prime lenses also got much better. They have tons of corrections and their sharpness is insane. The implies your prime lens can effectively zoom by cropping, and you will have the same sharpness as the zoom lens zoomed in, although admittedly you will not make the 35-150 range.

the sigma 85 1,4 dg dn is better than the samyang. I know it costs a little bit more but there is a significand difference between both. It is really fucking sharp and has a much faster AF. I mean the sigma is on the same level like the sony but way cheaper and a little bit lighter.

If I had to choose the one lens to use for the rest of my life, I'm gonna stick with my Sony 35mm f1.4 GM prime lens for all situations. In my personal opinion, it's the most versatile prime lens available. Better than the 50mm because it's too tight for indoor shots such as events or real estate photography and it's a better option than the 24mm because it's too wide. The 35mm f1.4 can get the job done in any situation, you just have to move around more.
@ProfFrank
@ProfFrank 2 года назад
I agree. When I was shooting film back in the 70s-90s, the 35mm was my favorite "normal" lens, because it frequently let me "get it all in" when in close situations. That doesn't mean I wouldn't switch it out for an 80mm when I could, but my Rokkor 35 was a champ.
@photographsdaily33
@photographsdaily33 2 года назад
I get kinda confused by this because i have a 24mm lens but my camera crops it to make it about 38 I think and I think its good for most situations! But when people say 35mm I'm like is that cropped or.. 🤣

I like primes, but the ability to dial in your background more perfectly on a zoom can be a big advantage you didn't mention. Sometimes you just can't move yourself and subject in the perfect position when limited to a few primes.
@ascelot

other advantage of primes, depending on lens, is they tend to be more sharp, especially around the edges, have less chromatic aberrations and nice bokeh

Don't get me wrong, I am having a doubt that f1.4 has very shallow focus depth then how can we focus a full body (head to toe), I cannot focus even from head to waist with my 55-200mm variable aperture nikon lens at f/4. In this video the subject is nice and crisp, how is that! I am an amateur photographer, so please help me figure it out.

I find the modern high-end zoom-lens to be of such quality that the gap between Prime vs Zoom is being very narrow now unless you go with a crappy entry-level zoom or kit lens. That's why my current bag consist of: - Tamron 24-70 F2.8 VC G2 - Canon RF 70-200 F2.8 IS - Samyang 85mm F1.4 The only reason I bought the Samyang was for the F1.4 and have my "official portrait lens" as otherwise I can have the 85mm into the 70-200mm already, and F2.8 ain't that bad already but also that prime Samyang is sooo lightweight and fun to use.
