This puts a smile on my face looking back 2 years ago, I bought my 1989 mr2 from a guy 2 hours away who pushed the car out of a shipping container. He didnt even look at the car before having me come check it out. After pushing it out and thinking it didn't run but was in excellent shape we shook at $3,000. As a joke i turned the keys and it started. Drove all the way home no issues.
Toyotas just don’t wanna die, I worked at Toyota here in Florida for 2 years. I was an aw11 with 267,000 original miles on it, and the freaking bolstering was CRISP. I couldn’t believe my eyes.
Started watching a couple of months back, and now you guys are like my go-to car channel. The "big" name car YT'er I just lose interest with their dragged on videos. I gotta say for a channel this small, the quality is insane. I just lurk and don't post comments like these, but I had to do this one time. At first I thought Netgear was some weeb that named himself after a router for some reason, but now I absolutely enjoy the knowledge he drops on us.HOOD CERTIFIED and doesn't care about getting his PP Slapped!!! REAL OG
@@thumbtak the 2k one straight dissapeared off marketplace not sure what happened. But the 3,600 is in Kent WA. It could run I bet it's just not the nicest in looks department
Just found this video and I recognized the AW11 you guys started talking about around 1:17. I actually sold the guy the spare red transmission with that exact wooden tray pictured at 2:10, as well as the old 16-valve engine out of my AW11. Guess he never did get around to getting it working properly. Small world lol.
Aw11 owner and enthusiast for 26 years. These cars are solid and great drivers cars. Much fun. They're way to heavy for their size though unfortunately.
i once looked at an aw11 on marketplace. The seller was bragging about how it had a silver top 4age in it, but he later said the engine had rod knock and the whole car was fucked. Lmao
I have an 86 MR2 it's in really good shape besides the fact that the timing off what with the 4AGE being a non-interference motor it's still fires and runs Wicked fun cars and it came with an old Jack handle for a Hood prop
I left a 5 star review at my local pick and pull and they banned me from the place. I said” a Smash room entrance fee is $15. a pick-and-pull it’s only $2 to get in. You can break everything except the bank.”
Woah, i was just looking at these 5 minutes ago, neat, but yeah aw11s are rustbuckets for cheap, anywho, great vid as always ccf, keep up the great work
I've been looking at these for monthsss. Its kinda funny seeing someone else evaluate all the listings I've diven into for a long time. Is it stupid to want to buy a car you've never even ridden in before? Also a AW11 for a first hobby-car seems like a dumb idea (but then again that's the point of a hobby car).
I am STILL looking for one of these in not-totally-rotted condition if only so I can stuff a modern Corolla motor, a Previa's AWD, and a Mazda supercharger into it
Finally! I've been waiting for that one, just bought one, It's a peach, basically perfect. But over here in europe they're like 3x more expensive than in the states...
I just bought one a few weeks ago, owned two in total. Motor blew up, so I'm swapping it since people want an arm and a leg for a 4AGE. They're great cars, but finding parts is quite difficult.
Its a flocked dash because finding a MR2 dash that doesnt look like a dry lake bed is nearly impossible. Last time I saw good condition dash for sale the seller wanted $2k for it.
There’s a 240sx for sale in Richland Washington you guys should check out for your next 240sx video, the car is wrapped red in the front and then fades to black. You guys should check it out for the next video. Wanna see your guys’s opinions on it
And this is where the 'keep it clean for x years and the price will go high' theory goes to failure. Exactly the same shitbox, but in Corolla body costs at least twice the AW11.
now, idk about the states but around where I live the AW11 MR2 is either slightly rusted and 100% salvageable for around 4 or 6 thousand (think like a pretty bad case of rust in maybe 1 or 2 spots but the rest of the car is in nice condition) or it's completely ruined and overpriced (think 2k for a car you'd need to sink 10k into just to scrape the bottom of the road legal bin) Otherwise they're in good condition and over 14k
I love the mr2 but it is such a small car, if i ever owned one i would have to cut a hole in the roof or something, unfortunately ive been cursed to never be able to enjoy this car😔
Lol How tall are you?? I would Either start with getting a deep dish steering wheel and maybe a T-top version so you don't have to cut into the roof. Maybe Moon Roof too.
@@mannycien3247 on a aw11? If so there must be some differences between the usdm and jdm versions, here in australia we only got the jdm version and i cannot fit in my cousins aw11 for the life of me, mabye i could get a bucket seat or something really low though
Had no idea it was a 20 valve. Like why? More sht to break? Why don't you see any of these over 200k? Is that why it's called the MR2, because Must Repair 200k?
Ok so I had gotten a sw20 mr2 3sgte swap for 3500 4 years ago . When I sold it the car was still easy to find for 4k decently running and now these mr2 price are insane . Not even worth it tbh just get a loan and get the new mid engine corvette . Plus the parts for an mr2 are expensive too . The suspension was like $900 for the cheap ones and the JDM tail lights by itself are like 600 . 3sgte aren’t that expensive but if I ever get another mr2 I would just k-swap it .
@17:28 the red one with the black hood. Common problem. I bet on a bad relay. COR or fuel pump relay. Had that same problem twice. If the engine and transmission are good most repairs are easy to do. The only repair that's really a pain in the a** is replacing the fuel pump.
20:43 I know what happened here. That car sat at a scummy dealer's lot for a long ass time and it eventually got sold. Guy probably overpaid for it, it likely had jerry rigged repairs to get it to sell initially. I'm glad I didn't buy it, almost went to take a look at it... until I read reviews about JCM.
I’ve had both and the Fiero is not superior. I had an 88 Fiero manual transmission with the improved suspension and it was fun, but the engine was crap and left me stranded a few times. The interior was GM crappy and has not aged well. They also sold a ton of Fieros compared to MR2s, yet you don’t see many anymore. The only thing superior about the Fiero is the composite body panels that don’t rust or ding. Damn Chevrolet for not letting Pontiac put a proper engine in the Fiero because they didn’t want it to cut into Corvette sales.
11:57 - This one “COULD BE” brought back; but it would take “SO MUCH” elbow grease; then the question would become “IS IT WORTH IT”?? and i would say “HELL NAW” scrap it…….
that pick n pull part was fuckin gold, this one time i walked out with a shift knob and a rear ashtray from an ls400 that i didn't pay for, bro inspected my bag and clearly saw them and said "yep you good to go".
I love that interior. So cool looking. But the 80s Isuzus are even cooler with all the unusual controls. My favorite is the digital dashboard in the Oldsmobile Bravada though.
0:24 difference between the boomer stuff and the new jdm stuff is that no one is making parts for the jdm stuff and original items are hard to restore compared to the older cars. So you could have a basket case impala and restore it. Hard to do the same for an aw11
I hope somehow laser printing fixes that problem, or something....I mean there's a market out there & now the prices are going up & a lot of JDM cars are making their way to the usa
Over here the coolant at the pick n pull is free. They also have the gas out of all the cars for free. When I had my old Subaru Brat with the super low compression like 7:1 ratio engine I used to fill up there all the time. That thing would run on Coleman fuel or Naptha, that's how low compression it was. Gas for free, I could drive for thousands of miles for free. The free coolant is good if you have a leak and are waiting a month to get the only available radiator. The batteries are genuinely a great deal. $20 even for a huge Group 31. I have some that I bought 5 years ago and they still work perfectly. They do desulfate them before selling them. They also have weird and expensive sizes like the tiny H3 which is the only battery that seems to fit in the space in my 79 Subaru. A lawn tractor battery also fits but doesn't have enough reserve capacity for my taste. Original battery was a weird size NS40Z but they are hard to find too. My mom's Jetta TDI has one from the junkyard and it was bought 5 years ago and it starts fine even in -10 degree temperatures.
Five years ago I owned a 87 MR2 supercharged, it was a total nightmare I could never find parts lost 7 Grand on it when I sold it, I paid way too much for it's to begin with. I don't know what I was thinking. Don't buy an old Japanese car unless you can buy an exact replica for parts. It probably goes for any older car.
There’s plenty of quality aftermarket performance parts for the 4age engine, honestly quite literally anything you need for the car is readily available ????
These AW11s are ACTUAL death traps. No ABS, no airbags, super light MR layout, might as well be made of sheet metal. Cool af though... If there's ever a correct way to hit a tree going 55mph, it's the AW11 😂
I own a clean AW11 with koni suspension and 205/50 R15 tires. You have to drive it really really hard to get the back come after you. My NA Miata with similar setup oversteers much faster. Yes it's better controllable but like I said. You have to drive like an idiot to get the AW11 to oversteer.
@@elitristan3601 i think the lightness helps keep the aw11s from snapping, less weight (especially less weight up high) keeps it less prone to fast weight transfer upsetting the balance.
As a supercharged AW owner and someone who's ground up restored the car and had the engine refreshed with a fully rebuilt 4AGZE with every JDM bolt on of the era you can name and every single desirable OEM rare part not every AW is the same... That being said if I had to do it again I'd get an NA and make a race car. Albeit having owned and driven all three generations the third gen is the best the AW11 is the second best and the SW I have never fallen in love with. Handling and chassis dynamics wise the AW11 and the ZZW30 are the most "MR2" in spirit the SW was trying to be upscale and in a way aspired to be a NSX but it can never achieve that level. The turbos are fun but you definitely feel the extra weight in the SW chassis.
if you were looking for a video where 3 guys are crying about the condition of 30+yr old mr2s,you found it,the price on aw11s is going to skyrocket, every yr they are harder and harder to find
