In September 2020, we had the privilege of catching up with the two living legends, Roger Federer and Stefan Edberg, to get their thoughts on all things Pro Staff; past and present. We had a lot of laughs as the guys talked equipment, tactics, and shared some really great stories, including how Roger came up with the idea for the SABR (sneak attack by Roger) and how Stefan won his first pro title with just 3 prototype rackets in his bag. Check out the video for these stories and more!

Possibly the 2 most elegant tennis players of all time. It's nice to see the estimation Roger and Stefan have for each other, it's clearly visible in this video. On my side, it was a privilege to be there in Milan when both Roger and Stefan won their very first tournement. What they don't mention here and probably don't even know is that it was not on the same tennis court, the stadium where Stefan won the tournement in 1984 does not exist anymore. It was destroyed by an incredible heavy snowfalling in 1985 in Milan, 2 meters of snow on the roof completely crashed the stadium. Roger won the tournement in another arena, actually not far from the other one. I do remember the 2 players at the very beginning of their careers when they basically were unknown...

Stefan Edberg is such a friendly guy and so down to earth. He had always been my role model - since my childhood. 2008 I was part of a sponsor and he was next to me. And all I said was if we could make a photo when he and his wife did left the building and go to a car. We did this pic, but it was okay to speak with him in this sponsor room and I did not!! What a pity! But in the hotel I met Lacoste and Borg.

Great, great video. Rewatch 1990 Wimbledon final this summer. Edberg stayed at the baseline once (1!) after his serve during 5 sets and then he did it as a suprise-move to kind of fool Becker. But there was not a single base line rally in that match. Times has changed a lot :-D

I love Stefan Edberg very much. especially the service delay. First, Edberg is the only one who has a service twist that doesn't need power. Edberg's service floated and was suspended in the air enough for him to hit the net, standing right at the service line ready to volley. Second, Edberg has a great backhand, especially the running backhand, because his racket back swing is already prepared by him when he runs. Third, Edberg is weak in the forehand, so he covers it with service games & volley. But until now Edberg remains a unique tennis player and to this day he is my idol. It's hard to imitate his body turning during service, his movements are beautiful like ballet. Greetings Edberg.

Edberg couldn't rally with his forehand against the likes of lendl and Becker because he didn't quite have the firepower but his passing shots were deadly on that wing, not with power but superb angles

Played briefly the RF90 and the RF97 Autograph but always got back to the 6.1 classic. One that was not a ProStaff but it really felt like one was the Six One 95 from 2014. I also played with that one. I'm currently playing with the Clash because I can't play with either of the above and never liked the ProStaff 97 (has nothing to do with a ProStaff except for the name). I had called Wilson in 2008 to give me some info on Federer or Sampras rackets, i.e., weight and balance point, and of coure they refused to tell me the specs citing its a trade secret. I begged them, since I wanted to experiment with no intention of telling anyone else. They wouldn't budge but contradicted themselves, by saying, "he uses the stock racket".. but still would not give me the balance point. Anyway, I found the exact specs for Federer and Nadal, after a few months of web searching. Now, there are videos of their rackets with tension based on court and humidity and balls, type of strings, balance point, weight and even the grip type etc. I still bought the KFactor 90, the quality control was garbage, both rackets were worlds apart in all their specs. had to use weights to balance it according to Wilson Specs. Then I found, Yonex and Head had the best QC for their rackets.

私はpoptartです Seems like the SV ps85 and also the head Pro Classic hit the mark as the perfect all round racquets that combined unreal feel, playability and demand of the user high quality shot making, emotionally rewarding the user for making excellent shots. Newer/larger heads seem to reward miss hits all over the place which deep down I think players appreciate but don’t feel good about. On the flip side, wood racquets demand too much off the user and always broke more often. The modern game unfortunately really doesn’t allow for smaller frames anymore unless wielded by truly gifted individuals as everyone is swinging for the fences now.and the serve volley has almost disappeared. Would love to see the Atp for just one year specify 85 square inches across the board and see what happens.

The big story for me is Fed going from 85 inches to 97 inches.

Now, who wants to go out and buy a Wilson racket?

I have several. 85, 90, 95 but not the 97. I'll have to trade for one in the future. I have witnessed many people that have bought the 97 but they don't have the skills or strength/endurance to play with the heavy stiff racquet. Thus, they don't actually regularly play with the stick. And, it sits in the closet or their bag when they are on the court😊. I like their hybrid string idea for comfort and touch.
