One thing I love about Luffy's message: While the other Straw Hats were getting the message, and the rest of the world was missing it with all the other stuff around it Vivi also noticed it. The only reason she didn't _understand_ the actual message is because she didn't have the context for 3D. Great that she's still on the same wavelength.

As far as I know, this is the best written timeskip in shonen history. It's worlds ahead of the usual "the villains aren't gonna move for X amount of time so let's train until then", which is really just an excuse to make the characters older. Not only it makes sense because of how much Luffy got destroyed throughout this Saga, but it also gives weight to their loss at Sabaody. It would have been kinda lame if they had a "complete collapse" just to reunite a few weeks later. Also fun fact, the Straw-Hats have been separated for 2 years IRL too. Amazon Lily to Post-Marineford took almost exactly 2 years. So weekly readers must have felt every second of their separation.

It's funny, because Brook was probably sent to his island to encourage the cultists to fight as a means of training his musical abilities, which is what he started to do. But then he got himself kidnapped and found an alternate way to train his music.

I'm pretty sure he was sent there because he's a swordsman, not because he's a musician. It is the Sword Mountain Island after all, and the only thing related to the island or it's people he seems to have taken with him after the time skip is his cane sword being sharpened by their locals (he highlighted how they were masters at doing so). The music stuff was all him and on tour so for that specific reason there was no point whatsoever to send him to that specific island.

I actually didn't connect at all how going to that island benefits Brook. Except now that you mentioned it, maybe something to do with his sword. But the things that he could do 2 years later, I couldn't see how this has helped him achieve it in any way (unlike Sanji's new move which was explained and totally make sense 😂).

Robin's line hit the hardest for me. They, each, had someone to get stronger/better for. Zoro for Kuina, Sanji for Zeff, Nami for her village, Usopp for Kaya, etc. Robin's the only one who's never had anyone to become stronger for.

In the manga Oda has made a point to never recycle old panels even when doing flashbacks to previous events unlike some other artists who do recycle them not that there's anything wrong with that. In the anime after the move to 16:9 HD they initially re-used the 4:3 SD footage and put a frame around it for flashbacks to events that happened in the first 206 episodes which always looked awkward, lazy and out of place due to the change in aspect ratio, resolution and changes in the animation style. Fortunately they eventually decided to just reanimate flashbacks to early key events originally animated in 4:3 SD to match the new resolution and aspect ratio for a more uniform presentation.

Best part about what Luffy did was understanding his crew. 1) They’re supposed to meet up in “3 Days” Luffys FINAL Orders. 2) Luffy knows his crew recognizes him as a dumbass which is why he loves them even more. A simple message like this is his was of telling the crew “These are my NEW ORDERS” 3) The Crew he chose. The reason they all understood it without fail is because they all understand their CAPTAIN without fail. Callback to them telling Ace “he’s no trouble at all”

I didn’t like the translation for the conversation between Zoro and Mihawk. In the sub, it says “beat you“. In the manga translation, he says “I want to surpass you“. There is a slight difference between the two, but I think it is meaningful. His goal is no longer just defeating Mihawk, but getting stronger beyond that.

It's time. I still recommend the 3D2Y special as it does a good job adding material to show what sort of events happened during this two year gap, and frankly I think the villain was the perfect foil for Luffy at this very specific point in his journey. But, mileage may vary. I can at least say this. If you liked the G-8 filler, I think you'll like this too.

To this day, nothing beats the voice acting of Robin's Japanese VA to me, it's just way too emotional and intense, and it just hits so god damn hard every time.
