I seeded 10,000 square feet of Zenith Zoysia in the Tidewater region of Virginia. It looks fantastic! I did the following things. -Roundup -Wait until everything is dead (1.5 - 2 weeks) -scalp the lawn as low as possible and blow the clippings away or bag them -till to at least 6” deep -wait two weeks -spread fertilizer recommended by seed producer -till again -spread seed at recommended rate -rake to very lightly cover the seed -roll to embed the seed and to ensure soil contact -water immediately and then on a schedule using timers during daylight hours. Every 4 hours for ten minutes to start. Then when germination occurs you can lengthen time in between watering. The idea is to water longer and less frequently as the grass grows. The most important thing to do in this process is to ignore the weeds. There will be a lot! Ignore them. Be patient. No herbicides yet. Just let the tiny little sprouts grow amongst the giant weeds. When the weeds start to crowd the seedlings and prevent them from getting sun, you can mow the area if needed just to keep the weeds from growing way too tall. Don’t use a riding mower. Light weight push mower. A soil sample would go a long way to make sure you fertilize correctly when starting. Most states have a program where you can send soil samples to an ag school and get a report for what is needed for what you’re trying to grow. Seeding zoysia is very possible but requires dedication and patience. I now have 10,000 square feet of zoysia that I’ll start pulling plugs from. Also, you won’t see the full results until late the following year. I laid the see mid June and the following September (the next year) I could see a beautiful zoysia stand.
Zenith Zoysia Seed is very successful when seeded in May. Water 💧 twice per day for the first 7-10 days or until sprouts appear. Drive XLR 8 is safe for seeding Zoysia Seed. I grew 8,000 sqft with Zenith Zoysia Seed from Super Sod and it's super thick now. Great choice instead of SOD. Sorry lawn care nut but there's some pre-emergent available that's safe to use when seeding Zenith Zoysia and it's Drive XLR 8.
Thank you for your advice. I am little too stubborn, loves challenges, and on a budget so I will try to seed and willing to fight the weeds along side. Hopefully zoysia will fight off the weeds on their own once established down the road. However, I almost used Tenacity but I have read the label like you did and do says not to use on zoysiagrass. Thank you for the heads up!
I have had success in southern Indiana planting zoysia in multiple areas. Weeds are going to be a problem the first year what has worked out best for me is to mow, mow, and mow and keep it at about 1". This will keep the weeds from shading the new zoysia. The next spring use 2,4,D and then enjoy your new lawn.
Im in the same boat as you killing off my old lawn and seeding with zenith in the recommend 8 weeks after applying! Hope everything worked out for you man!
He's absolutely right. Seeding zoysia or any warm season grass is much harder than cool season. But its not impossible lol. You just have to do all the prep and follow the needed steps. I seeded zoysia here in Fort Lauderdale and had a nice dense like sod lawn in a little more than 3 months. My water bill was astronomical, and i had to spray multiple post emergent herbicides, but I ended with a nice stand of Zoysia japonica. And its quite shade tolerant too, Compadre zoysia is. I have this side lawn if just 1000 sf that have 3 medium sized trees, so.shade was a big issue. And the compadre zoysia did just fine with great density to my surprise. I ended spraying it out bc I wasn't happy with its medium-wide blades and medium green. I really wanted a darker color and fine bladed zoysia. Also have issues with drought and probably parasitic nematodes here. If you're ok with medium bladed grass, this could be a great option. I'm trying bermuda and Seashore now, but that zoysia was so much easier to take care lol. *make sure you have irrigation and spraying equipment lol. Quiclorac, speedzone, sulfentrazone are some of the herbicides I had to use to clean the grass.
I've done 15000 square feet with a 100 dollar tiller. It's HARD work. That being said... This guy is right about the weed issue but wrong about two things. 1) Quinclorac 75 DF will handle the weed problem with no issues. It doesn't affect zoysia in the slightest. and 2) no one has money for pallets of zoysia. Get the zenith zoysia seeds on do my own and go to town. Till your lawn, put down alot of lime, some starter fertalizer, and water water water.
I wish I would have seen this video before planting Zoysia. I literally watched all your videos and some how I got to this one after I planted seed. LOL
I'm going for it all right. Seeded prg with it to help give it a chance. Definitely gonna be s slow burn but if it works gonna be awsome. Hoc 1" three mows on it only 14 days old filling in nicely. Super thin but looking healthy. That Tampa heat definitely helped pop it out of the shell quick.
What about pre-germination? Soaking the seeds in water to get germination and then mixing the seed with humate and spreading. My parallel strategy is doing 1500 plugs in planting vats. Once mature enough sinking the plugs. I do have an irrigation system. Dealing with a mix of large areas of bare ground and crab grass.
Why didn’t I watch this the months ago?!?? Geez I’m struggling with the zoysia right now! At least I made one good decision with glyphosate prior to seeding.
