The ZPacks Duplex is a much loved ultralight backpacking tent used a lot on multi-day thruhikes. It is an ideal tent for people looking to strip back their baseweight on adventures, whether bikepacking, back packing or anything else. In this video I dig into the tent, sharing my first impressions regarding the usability and pros and cons.

Great review Abbie. IfI were doing the PCT or similar, I think I'd go for one of these.

It’s a really great tent. Taken it to Scotland twice now and it’s held up wonderfully and condensation was minimal.

I've had a Duplex for 7 years and have found it ideal in most 3 season conditions. What's more, my aging back thanks me for 10-12 hours of hiking every day that I'm not carrying a "bomber", 4 season, 2 kg tent that's 100% not necessary for most of my escapades. I don't find condensation to be a big deal - I always carry a wash cloth/pack towel/Lightload towel to quickly wipe away condensation before packing up the tent. If it's raining then I can still fold and roll the tent to keep the inner dry. If I have a dry break in the day then I can fully dry out the tent in a few minutes in the wind and/or sun. If you lose a trekking pole you can use a branch as a tent pole! As regards pitching and pegs: I've pitched it with no pegs at all when necessary, using the "Big Rock/Little Rock" method. This method works fine, opening up alpine or sandy or other possibilities where pegs may not be usable.

Thanks for that - very informative. Bear in mind that if you are ordering from the USA, there is 20% VAT to be added and 12% import duty! Which bumps the price up quite a bit.

Avoid - even though hardly used and undamaged, my duplex leaks through a dozen or so invisible holes in the DCF. Because I'm a dry weather hiker, I didn't discover this until after the warranty period expired. zPacks response was "our tents have a limited life, here's some repair tape". So now I have a non-waterproof tent with repair patches all over it.

I'm still not sold on single wall tents. I get enough condensation problems in a more traditional double walled tent that has a fair bit of mesh on it. Plus being 6'5 not touching the edge of a single skin tent and getting condensation transferring to my bag is a real concern. I can fully understand if you are completely sold on the ultralight experience but for me there are too many compromises. That said I think this was a great video with pro's and con's fairly presented. Plus All Hail Duct tape! Fixer of all things!

As a first over night camp and walk what would you say is the best for a first timer.... ????? I do a good deal of all day walking and am thinking of going for longer IE day or two. Thanks Mark

Interesting to see, thanks Abbie. The cost of the DCF is about $100. (Wholesale, DCF costs about $7.50 per square yard)

Abbie, can you clarify what you mean by ‘ I will say I do work with Zpacks’ ?

Sure! So they sent me this tent for free to try out and do whatever I want with, and I have talked with them about creating a discount code for my RU-vid fans to use to get money off. That is where we are up to at the moment :)

@@AbbieBarnesWILD yep interesting Abbie - I recently posted a comment on someone’s ‘tent comparison review’ I have a couple of HB & TN tents and a Tarp Tent Stratosphire (apologies if spelling is wrong) - so 5! in total not counting the tarp set-up, which frankly pile in right behind my ‘first choice’ and stated: if I could only keep one tent it would be the TN Laser Compact AS2! So a similar thought process to yours… as you say: it’s dependent on use type as no one tent is perfect but I am consolidating on the ‘single hoop’ tent approach as the best compromise….

As much as I love tents like the Duplex they are way out of my price range just like a lot of people.

$699 for what is essentially a big plastic bag with some loops and ropes attached to it seems a bit excessive, to be honest. Especially if you get basically the same functionality from tents like Lanshan 1 for one quarter the price. I really don't know what you're paying the extra for.
