23’ ZR2 owner with 17k on the dash. No issue. Ever. I work as a mobile nurse so I travel 80-90 miles a day and I turn off and start my truck 7-8 times a day. Michigan weather throws everything at it. I had no other choice but the 6.2 or else I may have opted to get that baby duramax. Depends on how I drive the 6.2 but I’d say you aren’t getting much favors from the ZR2 stance. Badass looking but I’ve averaged 16.5 with plenty of pulls here and there. Overall it’s been a great family truck/work truck and overall badass daily.
@@88Petry refinancing out of a 2.9% would be a little backwards in money terms farther than gas is going to save me in a 3.0 and maybe you missed the part about it not being available in this model year.
If your worried about gas efficiency then your not looking for the 6.2L V8. I’ve modified my 2023 Trailboss 6.2 with an AWE exhaust, SB cold intake. You gotta love that V8 symphony on a cold start. On the list is a whipple supercharger.
I own a 2023 Toyota tundra with the new TwinTurbo V6 and my motor just seized to stop working literally failed so it’s a good thing you didn’t buy the tundra
@@ChadManCreations in my Tundra video, I expressed concerns with the new engine in trucks and SUVs, but I couldn’t have imagined what actually happening right now. I think it’s a manufacturing issue, and not an issue with the engine itself, but non the less, I’m also glad I didn’t.
Thanks for the video. I bought a ZR2 with a Duramax yesterday. I drove it around town for about 50 miles, and the gas mileage is unbelievable! Just driving around town I was already above 20 mpg, and I do a lot of highway driving, so I can only imagine what the mpg and range will be like. The guys at the dealership even mentioned that some ZR2 owners are trading in their 6.2 for the Duramax. So thanks again for the info because it really helped me make a good decision 🎉
Bro.. great video! I dont even like GM, and I watched. You need a small lift and your 3.0 will be pefect. That traill boss is too long. Swb for the win.
The antenna is still available because it is still the best design available for AM signals. Rural Americans are still are large demographic of pickup buyers
Overpriced! GM dropped the ball in regards to amenities. Manual passenger seat, no heated seats in the back, seats aren't ventilated up front, no changing deck, and you need a subscription for the infotainment system to work properly. It's ridiculous for a $70+K truck. For the money, I'd buy an F-150 Lariat....
@@paulpryor850 both my front seats are fully electric and heated/ventilated, rear seats are heated, and there’s a wireless charging pad. I really have no idea why you think the higher trims are not loaded.
@MOHAWKAUTO I looked at one! MSRP $73K! Leather seats, but only heated up front. Multifunction tailgate, and no bed liner. There was no charging deck, sun roof ,and the rear slider wasn't power. The passenger seat was even manual. This was just a month ago! I then looked at the Chevy High Country that was MSRP at $77K. But it wasn't equipped as well as my previous truck. GM's only knocking off a few grand from MSRP pricing. Everything is in transit! So, on lot inventory is low to keep the price high. One dealer told me they had a GMC Dellini, and I drove 2 hours, and they didn't even have it on the lot. I haven't bought a GM product since the 80s.
@@paulpryor850 I can’t speak for what you were looking at, but I’m telling you what my truck has and that it was under 70k when I bought it. The ZR2 comes with a bed liner also. My truck does have a few additional options like the HUD showing speed, NAV info, off-road telemetry, and other info, heated steering wheel, rear view camera display for a rear view mirror, lane keeping assist, I can go on and on. Bottom line, it’s fully equipped and in my area, there isn’t a lack of product or dealers claiming they have something they don’t. I’m sorry that you’re getting the run around from dealers in your area.
Great Video! I have had the 2020 5.3 Trail Boss leveled on 35s. and recently bought the 2024 Z71 RST 5.3L 10 speed with a 6” lift and 20 x 10s. Was a hard pick between the 5.3 & 3.0 2024 but I live in the city, so long term the gas engine felt like it would be better for fuel costs and regen which is hard to achieve where I live with a diesel engine if I don’t get out on the highway and really run it. This video was awesome I really enjoyed it.
Everything I said I was reading from the Chevy website. I also was not trying to suggest that it was manually controlled as it is automatic. Thank you for helping to clarify as that could have been misleading.
@@jeeprubi759it's not controlled by the traction control module. It is a mechanical locker and when one wheel is spinning more than the other it will automatically engage.
I Don't like how g80 has to feel slipping until it engages. I have 22 Colorado Zr2. These lockers are there when you need them. Shouldnt have to wait to lock up. You can unlock with the touch of a button
Bought a 2024 Trailboss with the Duramax. Got 24,000 kms on it now and I absolutely love this truck. I traded a RST with the 6.2 and the only thing I miss is the top end passing power. The Duramax in the low end is as good or better. All in all the 3.0L Duramax is awesome 👏🏻
@@darrin2053 I think this engine will be regarded as one of GMs best engines. I’m sure we’ll see safe tuning and upgrades before too long and it’ll only get better.
@darrin2053. I currently have a 2021 6.2 LTZ (mileage 17 ave, 10-11 towing) . debating on going 2024 with 3.0 duramax. how is your mileage hwy and towing?
Honestly I’d go with the 6.2l no matter what (the aftermarket has tons of proven upgrades for power and reliability. And sounds insane with a cam and borla exhaust!) mainly because I like the 18” deep dish trail boss wheels, and the dssv is kinda meh compared to a full fox coilover lift. And I’d also rather the 2020 model year style (how many model years was YOUR EXACT style available??) Not quite sure of the price discrepancies, but I would take the newest model year, lowest mileage 6.2l trail boss lt I can find (with your fascia, again not quite sure how many model years it went for…2 maybe 3? 20,21,22, maybe 23? I dunno when the “refresh/updated styling came into play, but I want the old one like yours. And the money I save vs buying a 2024 z r2 mini max….id do an intake/exhaust/tune to my 6.2l AND full fox coilover lift with UCA’s and hydro bump stops…for the same money or less!
Trail boss wheels aren’t normally deep dish. Of course there’s a lot of performance upgrades you can get for the 6.2l which is awesome for those with the money and inclination to do so. A lot of them are still going for the mid 50k range though. Also, my buddy looked at doing something similar to what you’re suggesting as was quoted 11.5k to have it done. That gives you a good lift and tires, but not the manual lockers and no front locker. That may not be of importance to you, but to get that would be pretty expensive. You’d be better off getting a used ZR2 with the 6.2L and then doing suspension if you wanted to get the manual lockers. However, you’d lose the front end look it sounds like you’re going for. The DSSV is unmatched. Calling Fox, King, Bilstein and they all say they have nothing better to offer for stock setup. It would be difficult to say that a suspension conversion is “better” would be subjective to what you’re trying to accomplish. Because the DSSV is so damn good, I’m hesitant to modify the suspension in any way that eliminates it.
Great video! I agree that the GMC’s front end looks better than the Chevy and the overall the Chevy is a better value. Love my 23 RST with the 5.3 would definitely consider the 3.0 for the gas mileage and the 6.2.
Depends on what you're willing to spend. If you can afford it I think that the ZR2 is definitely better. With all that said, I have the Trail Boss. There was no ZR2 at the time of my purchase, or I would of had to seriously the ZR2.
From what I’ve read, the hurricane will have more horsepower, but less torque. However, the hurricane is replacing the V8 as their high end engine option so it would be more fair to compare it to the 6.2 from GM. That comparison shows the 6.2 having more horsepower and similar torque.
Great video! I agree that the GMC’s front end looks better than the Chevy and overall the Chevy is a better value. Love my 23 RST with the 5.3 would definitely consider the 3.0 for the gas mileage and the 6.2.
From what I’ve heard, the 3.0 feels much like the 5.3 for the day to day driving, but the 3.0 pulls a lot better when towing and when hills are involved.
On Friday, 5/3/2024, I bought a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT Trail Boss w/3.0l Duramax, and while it doesn't have all the bells and whistles(my 2020 GMC 3500HD AT4 does), it has enough of them to make it a really nice truck... There are 2 things that I will miss on this new truck that my 2020 has, and those would be the rearview mirror camera, and the HUD, other than that, not so much anything else... I feel fortunate to have found it, there's NOTHING out there right now, especially ZR2's... My 2020 GMC 3500HD AT4 with the L5P has averaged 18MPG tank after tank after tank, it's all in how you drive...
I’m thinking of going from a f150 King Ranch to a zr2 either 1500 or 2500. I had a 07 classic z71 before I bought the f150 and never had any problems with it. Ready to get back to that reliability. On a side note I have a backflip and will never own another. Heavy, leaks like a screen door, and blocks the back glass. I’m either going power retractable tonneau or pawpaw cap next time.
My cover isn’t heavy and doesn’t allow much water in. It does cover the back glass, but I don’t care because I have the rear view camera mirror. The actual camers sits above the cover so I can see behind me just as clearly when it’s down.
Just buy a 4x4, not z71 or zr2, and create your own off road toy. Save money on the truck and you can piece together something you like instead of settling for what they give you.
I challenge you to buy a new truck, buy the parts, have them installed professionally, all while making sure nothing voids the warranty, for the same price or less.
You forgot about the manually locking differentials, different bumpers, skid plates, etc., but that’s cool. You like the Raptor? Neat! It’s an awesome truck and I like them. However, it could also be said that it’s a disappointment compared to the TRX. It all comes down to what you’re looking to get. For me, the price point that I paid for a brand new ZR2 and the added benefit of excellent fuel economy makes it the better choice than a Raptor or TRX.
That 6.2 requires premium fuel. I have the 6.2 in my truck, too, and I also have the Pulsar LT. I added some lift as well, but I still get almost 14 MPGs.
@@blutomindpretzel263 True, but if you want to feel every bit of power though. I don't always use 93 octane but I can tell the difference. I know some states don't even have 93 octane though.
At 200k you need to change the oil pump belt and that shouldn't be a big deal but the transmission has to come out to change it since it's in the back of the engine running off the crank.
Just bought a 24 Trail Boss with the 3.0L Duramax. Absolutely in love with the truck. Added the 2” ready lift kit and 35s. Truck drives really smooth and gets unreal mileage for a full size pickup.
Around 25 highway and I’ve only had it for a week but have put 600 miles on it already. Pretty unreal considering it’s brand new and the lift and tires obviously don’t do the mileage any favours.
Great review. Fan of the 3.0 but prefer the look of the z71. Great trucks foe sure. Do you produce your videos? The quality is great for such a new channel. 👌
The backflip mx4 d cushions are replaced with those large foam blocks. This is done to take up more room due to the roof spoiler. Looks like they put the foams blocks too low. They should be closer to the hinge.
Chevy got bullied so bad they had to really come through with the updated interior. If i could get a 2020 with the 2022 interior that'd be great. Wish they would've done that to the Limited models

18:28 at least a 6.6 gas does not have cylinder deactivation like a 6.2. Putting a bypass to "mitigate" the dod/afm does not fix the fact that it still has those lifters that fail
Additionally I'm not shiting on either truck I just think Chevrolet is failing its customer base. And I think the 6.6 gas is a fantastic answer to the 7.3 Godzilla in the F250s
@@ZLwh1ne I’m not saying the 6.6 is bad, especially since it allows a much cheaper way to get a 2500. However, I’d prefer the diesel option if I was stepping up to the 2500. I’ve heard the 6.2 doesn’t have lifter issues if the cylinder deactivation and start/stop is disabled. That is something I think GM dropped the ball on and should truly fix.
@@MOHAWKAUTO the collapsible lifters are still present, and willing to fail with age. and as long as it's still direct injection there will be a carbon buildup problem to cause extra strain. I just can't trust GMs afm/dod.
I would trust the LZ0 over any half ton gasser that gm makes. And the 5.0 Ford is too reliable to not give any thought. But them 10speed transmission they put in both... 💩
I had them installed at a trusted local shop where the owner is/was a certified GM tech for many years. My friends trail boss that was in this video has had them on since he bought it and has never had an issue, and so far I haven’t either.
Traded my '18 nissan titan xd 5.0 cummins for a '23 ZR2 with the 6.2...i forgot how thirsty a gas engine is. The ZR2 is more comfy and smoother than the titan but i spent about 1/3 the cost on fuel in the titan XD... At the price i paid, im honestly looking to go back to the titan with the cummins. The ZR2 is awesome but im not looking for what it "offers" vs the diesel titans...
@@TallnerdyguyNot bad, haven't owned a diesel. Was considering the 3.0 Duramax partly for the better MPG. But diesel fuel tends to be 35% costlier and then having to add in DEF seemed counterproductive . Thought it would cost more. Is that oil change every 5k miles? How many gallons of DEF does $18 buy?
@@MOHAWKAUTO Economy, the torque is available immediately which is perfect for towing, off roading especially on hills. Anytime someone is averaging close to 27MPG with a full size truck it's a win.
Great review and nicely detailed. I love this ZR2 Silverado and plan on purchasing one. I have enjoyed your truthful opinions. I have Question? There has been RU-vid videos about extra oil consumption with the ZR2 3.0 Duramax Diesel. I seen on a video that there is an extra quart of oil added to the oil pan from GM for the break-in period for the first 500 miles. Please look into this and share with us any facts that you discover about this LZ0 diesel engine. Thank you in advance, Steve from Western Mass.
I saw those too and noticed mine was slightly overfull (very slightly) and never noticed it consuming oil up to its first oil change I had done with just over 3k on it. GM said everything was normal when I bought it and when the oil change was done.
@@CharlesZupan the raptor is great, but like the TRX I reviewed, the cost simply is too much by comparison for a true off road full size truck. If money wasn’t a concern, I wouldn’t mind having one though.
@@CharlesZupan the tremor is more money (high package to be similarly equipped) for a truck that doesn’t appear to have a front locker and that neither locker can be manually controlled. Not to mention neither of the engine options can get the fuel economy of the 3.0 Duramax. I did look at the Tremor though when looking at trucks.
Seems like you’re trying to justify your 3.0 since you got it for a good price, but that’s why you got it for a good price, because it’s a 3.0 and not a 6.2. Be realistic, nobody buys a truck caring about gas mileage - if you care about gas mileage, get a sedan. I would only go with the ZR2 if I’m keeping everything stock and not planning on making any mods to the suspension, lift, etc. because that’s where the extra cost is on the ZR2. And if you’re going with the ZR2, get the 6.2. Your boy’s Trail Boss is way better!
Cool! Seems like you’re the kind of guy who says “Look how big my … engine is.” like it’s an indicator of something. I’ve also said that you don’t get a truck for the purpose of getting good fuel economy. However, if you could get one that had that ability, wouldn’t you like to have it? Be realistic, I’ve never heard anyone say, “I want whatever gets the worst fuel economy.”, have you? The 3.0 isn’t why I got it for a good deal and from what I’ve seen, the diesels are outselling the 6.2. I’m not trying to justify my 3.0, but I also don’t need the 6.2 (nor am I willing to pay more upfront and in long term ownership because of fuel costs) and a lot of other consumers feel the same way. The 6.2 is great, but for me, the 3.0 is better. What are you driving by the way?
@@MOHAWKAUTO lmao you sound offended and contradictory. I’m going with 6.2 = power all day over 3.0 = gas mileage. You even said 6.2 has more power. Like I said, no real truck owner cares about gas mileage. I have a 6.2 Trail Boss I can add ZR2 suspension, good luck getting a more powerful engine.
Good luck changing the timing chain which is behind the motor between the motor and transmission, mine didn’t last not even 15k miles, got it replace and sold it right away
@@MOHAWKAUTO yes, that was my disappointment, it also drives the high pressure fuel pump but what also impressed me that is in the rear of the engine, they had to pull cab and engine out for that
@@jesuslozano5468 they should have only needed to pull the trans to get that done. There’s another RU-vidr that showed doing the belt on a customers (massive neglect) and they didn’t remove the engine or cab.
How are you determining their size? Do you check out pair on all trucks? Weird flex, but okay. I’m kidding, but I am curious about how you’re measuring that. Is it the horsepower? Is it the torque? Is the the sound it makes? How it pushes you back in the seat?
That’s an option, but it doesn’t have what I was looking for in a truck and I don’t like the looks of the TRD Pro as much. Plus I hate the micro transaction navigation that Toyota has implemented.
@@MOHAWKAUTO glad you got what you like. I was going to get a a new 2024 Chevy trailboss LT2 and I must say that mechanical locker was very appealing spinning so much before it kicks in. I have noticed a lot of people like getting stuck before the locker kicks in. I will say I got the 1794 TRD off road and the Chevy has nothing on it. I love the panoramic sun roof vs the little Chevy sunroof. I plan to install a 6 inch lift and I have a electronic locker. I feel sorry for the people who get the custom model. I do like the look of outside Chevy but not so much with those hard leather seats.
