I feel Zuggtmoy would make a DND version of The Last of Us very possible. Imagine a cult growing these mind altering fungus in the sewers to be released on the unwitting city to then be over run by fungus zombies to spread the spores.

The way I look at it, referencing the CR of the demon lords, most of these come from the under dark campaign, I view these as only avatars of the demon lords, not their true form and power.

Could Imagine a cleric/anti-paladin of Zuggtmoy called Marious The Supreme in a party sent to rescue a princess but turns out to be more than they bargain for.Also he has special abysmal fungus he can eat to improve his physical prowess and senses.

for the question on why the demon lord have their lair effects, in the Adventure: Out of the Abyss, those 8 demon lords are forced into the underdark for months, and they set up places to inhabit, so the lair effects are present for that adventure.

Zuggtmoy got me into Dungeons and Dragons. I picked up a copy of Dragon Magazine back when I was a teenager. The cover was Zuggtmoy, and I thought it looked badass so I bought it from my local hobby shop. Man that issue was great. It had articles about the Shadar-kai too, and who doesn't love emo shadow elves? edit: Oh shit! The article your reading from was the same article in the magazine!

Ha! *Another* coincidence Get this, dudes. I took influence from IRL Baphomet and your videos on such and Yeenoghu. So, I made a post apocalyptic world, monster Hunter style, for one-shots. Few demons Lords manage to bypass a allworld shattering ritual that was meant to stop the spreading of demonic chaos, in the form of Zuggtmoy, Juiblex, Orcus, Yeenoghu, Yugoloths, etc. They shattered the other planes, consolidating them under pressure, sacrificing their being. The demonic spread got too bad. In the end, Baphomet, Yeenoghu, and Zuggtmoy were the only great known remaining powerful beings. The Astral Plane merged with the skies of the Material Plane, Shadowfell with the Underdark and it's reaches. Zuggtmoy defeated and consumed Juiblex, who was devouring her soon-to-be Hive and prey, claiming the Underdark as hers. Yeenoghu ruled the grasslands, forests, mountains, and deserts, where lots of Feywild merged into the Material Plane. Baphomet took up domain in other underground structures, interlinking them all into the Spine of the World, emulating his immaculate maze-like domain in the Abyss. I used Yeenoghu due to Gnolls being too perfect a villian on Material Plane and mechanically, with Baphomet being another favorite. They are also enemies, so I find it humorous they live to this point. Zuggtmoy was irresistible due to my fascination with spores and their feeling of impending doom. Needed that Hivemind enemy. Thanks for the influences and "oh shit" coincidences. They're all amusing

On the subject of the CR being basically on par of an ancient red, I forget who said it, but a CR 60 creature (can you freaking imagine?!) could theoretically handle a greater deity. An ancient dragon has had nearly a millenia to grow in power, not only in natural capabilities, but a surprisingly large amount of them are potent spellcasters.

Mushroom Menace (Part One) Dedicated to Kevin Candela (1957 - 2023) Frowning in concentration, Spencer twisted and manipulated the lockpick inside the keyhole. After several failed attempts and a steadily growing pile of broken picks, he was ready to give up altogether. This time, however, the Gods of Thievery smiled on him as a satisfying click heralded success. He let out a deep breath of relief and slipped the lockpick back in the pouch on his belt. Getting up from the kneeling position he had been in for the last thirty minutes or so in front of the thick, jungle wood door, he rubbed the cramp out of his tired leg muscles and cast a glance back down the darkened hallway behind him. The mansion was still and silent and the single glowstone lamp suspended by a chain from the beamed ceiling showed only dust and shadows and the occasional green-furred rat that scurried furtively across the clay brick floor. Satisfied that he was completely alone, Spencer turned back to the heavy door. Cautiously, he wrapped his leather gloved hand around the rusting door handle and turned it. The door groaned in protest, revealing a rectangle of deeper darkness beyond. He could see nothing within and slowly moved across the threshold. Instinct, rather than good training suddenly compelled him to jump back out into the hallway heartbeats before three long metal spikes as tall as he was shot up from concealed openings in the floor, eager to puncture right through his body. Spencer’s heart was in his mouth as the spikes slowly receded back into their hiding places after several moments. Noting where the openings were, he gingerly made his way through the door a second time. No more traps were triggered, and he found himself on a wide landing with the wall to his left. He reached out to get his bearings in the dark and his fingers accidentally brushed against a square wooden switch which, when pressed, activated another glowstone lamp suspended from the ceiling. The sickly yellow light it provided showed him a wooden staircase leading down to the floor below. As he made his way toward it, a heavy, earthy stench welled up to greet him and he wrinkled his nose in disgust. Mindful of any more surprises, he carried on down the steps and into what looked like a small storage room packed with crates and barrels. An archway led off from the room just to the right of him, out of which glowed an eerie violet light. The smell got stronger as he crept toward the arch and the air around him grew steadily colder. When he passed through the archway and entered the chamber beyond, it became grimly clear what was causing these unpleasant conditions. He was in some kind of laboratory. A workbench containing various pieces of equipment, books and a journal, stretched the length of one side of the room. Three stone slabs were pointing lengthways toward the workbench on the opposite side of the lab, each one containing a motionless figure. At the far end of the room two metal torches burned brightly with a supernatural violet light that limned the room in nightmarish shades. They flanked a low wooden altar upon which several shrivelled black shapes sat. A leather banner hung over the altar, daubed with the symbol of a jawless human skull with fungi sprouting from within it. Spencer grimaced, recognising the obscene symbol of Zuggtmoy anywhere. No wonder it was so cold and foul in here; he had stumbled straight into a demon shrine! Already he could hear low, sibilant whisperings coming from the altar as its corrupting influence reached out with groping tendrils to molest his soul. He quickly averted his gaze from the disturbing conduit to the Demon Queen of Fungi, and focused instead on the three prone figures. The first two, an adult man and woman respectively, were human or at least they used to be. Grotesque fungal growths covered their bodies, sprouting out of their clothing, and their hands and feet had become grey and bloated, ending in long hooked claws. Their breathing was harsh and raspy as they remained in their slumber, and the man’s mouth was slowly turning into a wide, yellow-fanged beak. Spencer stared at the two unfortunate wretches in abject pity and then turned his attention to the third motionless figure, a young boy who appeared, thankfully, not to have been altered in any way. This must be Kamau, Spencer realised; the very person he had been looking for. It had all began three days ago. He had ridden into Afro-Atlantis, the majestic capitol of the Pride Lands, with his prisoner, the notorious poacher Safari Joe, intending to claim the bounty that had been put on the scoundrel’s head by the city’s Duel Queens. Once he had collected his money, Spencer planned to enjoy a few days relaxing and taking in the sights before moving northwards to the Candy Kingdom, but then he heard about the disappearances. Citizens had suddenly been going missing, at least seven in the last month, and fear and panic was beginning to spread. The latest victim had vanished the very night before Spencer arrived, the son of a blacksmith named Mtumwa, and the bounty hunter promised the distraught man he’d do all he could to find out what had happened to the boy. His investigations had eventually led him to the remote, dilapidated estate of the eccentric and reclusive Lord Jekkel and into this foul pit. Spencer nudged the boy to try and wake him, but he remained motionless. His breathing was steady and it appeared that he had been drugged. That meant he would have to carry the boy out of here, but first he padded over to the workbench to take a look at the journal that rested open on it. It was difficult to decipher Jekkel’s crabbed, spidery handwriting, but Spencer managed to get the gist of it. The demon worshipper had been harvesting Abyssal energy from Zuggtmoy’s layer, sent to him via the altar, and combining it with his own alchemical formulas in the insane hope of creating an army of some kind of human-myconid hybrid with which to attack the city with. So far none of his subjects had survived the horrid process, bar the two latest victims on the slabs, and he had intended to try the process on a child to see if that would yield better results. Spencer shuddered and closed the journal, slipping the book into one of the deep pockets in his long coat. He would have to present it as evidence when he revealed Jekkel’s twisted scheme to the Queens. Hurrying back to Kamau, he carefully scooped him up and started to carry him in his arms toward the archway, meaning to get out of this vile place as quickly as possibly. Behind him, the burning torches suddenly hissed and crackled and he looked back to see them flare brightly. It seemed to act as an alarm, for the woman’s eyes shot open and she heaved herself up off the slab.

He set Kamau down as gently as possible and drew his short sword. The mushroom woman let out a deep groan and swung out with her large fists. Spencer ducked and made a strike towards her chest. The tip of his blade struck the spongy matter where her skin had once been, but did little damage. The woman retaliated with a fierce right hook that caught him on the side of his head. Stars exploded in front of his eyes and he sprawled across the ground. The mushroom woman clutched at his back, tearing at his leather jacket with her vicious claws. They cut deep grooves into his back right through the tunic he wore underneath and he almost bit through his tongue from the pain and could feel the blood weeping out of the wounds she had inflicted. Still gripping his short sword he thrust it up hilt first into the monster’s face. It caught her under the jaw with sufficient force to knock her back. The mushroom woman was unsteady and clumsy on her malformed feet and toppled backwards onto her slab. Spencer regained his feet and spun round to face her. He pulled a dagger from his belt and flung it at the shambling horror as she managed to get into a sitting position on the slab. He had aimed the dagger with deadly accuracy and it embedded itself in the vulnerable flesh of her still human throat. The mushroom woman gurgled and pawed at the blade with her meaty claws, unable to pull it free. Deeply shaken, Spencer turned to the still prostrate Kamau and went to pick him up again. On the slab, the mushroom woman screwed up her face and suddenly spewed a thick green gas out of her mouth. The cloud caught Spencer mid-stride and he collapsed into a fit of coughing as the gas seared his lungs and made his eyes burn. He wiped at the tears that now stung them and retreated to the workbench. The mushroom woman staggered to her feet again and lumbered towards him arms outstretched, the dagger still stuck in her throat. Spencer was gripped by a hacking cough now, and saliva dribbled down his chin. His chest was burning and he had doubled over against the workbench. The mushroom woman was about to deliver a barrage of deadly blows with her powerful fists, when his vision cleared a little and he spotted a potion near to where the journal had sat. Without any idea what was in it, he snatched it up and threw it at the creature in a desperate attempt to slow her down. As luck would have it, the bottle must have contained some kind of potent corrosive liquid because as soon as it shattered against the mushroom woman’s torso, acrid smoke began to rise up in great noxious plumes as the potion got to work eating through the fungal matter and flesh of her body. She let out a great howl of agony that froze Spencer’s heart and sank to her knees. The savage effects of her gas attack had started to recede and Spencer could think and act clearly again. Without hesitation, he flung himself away from the workbench and snatched up Kamau again. Clutching the boy close to his chest, he bolted through the archway, leaving the grotesque mutant to her fate.

I HAVE LIKED AND COMMENTED! I continue to serve the infectious dungeoncast! I bring good tidings this milords, for I return from my crusade victorious! I come bearing a trophy, the head of a fire giant warlord! I offer this trophy to you in your honor! The slaves freed from the giants fortress may very well now convert to the ways of knowledge and laughter. Hmm. zuggtmoy, a ridiculous name, but I mus'nt underestimate this one as she is still a demon lord. Perhaps I should investigate for any cultists of hers that I can root out. If a fungal infection is spreading across these lands under my nose I'll have to root it out, brining it into the light so it may grow no more. But for now I believe I'll rest. Sawing through the neck of a fire giant takes a lot of energy... This was a fun episode. I think this is the closest I'm seen will come to laughing as hard as he did in the dracolich episode. I don't know what it is, but it's always fun to watch brian make will break like that. Zuggtmoy is really cool, I'd never heard of her before this episode, although as soon as I heard anything relating to fungus I somehow knew it'd be a hivemind assimilation type deal. Called it. Its a cool concept but I'd like to see someone do something different not terms of mushrooms and fungus themed stuff, even with a villain. On the bright side, I now have a vague concept in mind for my own fictional world I can write. I'm picturing a big sapient deku tree like mushroom, which is hollowed out and serves as the home to many members of a race of mushroom people. That's all I have so far. She is masquerading as a different deity that appeals to what her followers like (Fjord and the water theme) and the Clay family is all about fungus and decay and they “take care” of people’s graves. What if they are actually doing that messed up shallow grave yellow fungus shit. Also, side note, Cadeuses is the cook of the group...maybe because he makes the final feast thing for cultists? The similarities here blew my mind. Cadeuses is actually a cultist of Zuggtmoy. You heard it here first.

I am narrating descent into avernus and one player is related with zuggtmoy, he is a druid of the spores and he kinda would like to destroy her So, I am thinking of how I can put her in the plot of the story, and I thought that she could infect some devils in avernus and creat a cult of devils who adore her But I didn't know why she would do that, while in war with juiblex So, I was thinking What would happen if SHE WINS the battle and destroy juiblex (or something like that) What would she do after that? It makes any sense that she could go to avernus and try to dominate everything there? I don't know Please, someone help me out with this

When you use demons, in game, this is what you're directly opening your PCs up to. If you don't like that, that's what devils and monstrosities are for.

Cool, but why is this a demon lord exactly? Sure, she is evil. But that's literally the only thing that can be used to call her demonic. Her layer of the abyss and her appearance alone is just gross and rancid. But nothing exactly screams "demonic" here except for her motivations.

The parasitic invasion of spores and what not makes me think of The Last of Us And I would homebrew that infection process licken to Last of Us, giving her zombie like husks of humans or other creatures. As well as showing that she is a deadly force to face off against. You would have to burn the land infested and nearby, enacting a scorch earth policy to contain and fight off against the spores and fungus. And by and large.. She seems like a weak entity compared to most other demons and just.. not that over all interesting. Although I do see her as a clever girl, she could be like a trickster diety and keeping a shrouded veil to a group of barbarians. "Away from that begoth eden of the west. When the wind be warm and wet, the ground be taught of water, mud and vine. Away away from the plant of shroom and bog, bewest the foul trickster put a spell on thee" Or seen as a life bringer, bringing life to a forest like a nature diety and people worship her by bringing her offerings of fresh kill game animals as a way of giving grace, and she returns give potent but mind controlling shrooms to grow from the kills. To slowly convert the people to think her way.. Or a clan of hill billies in a swamp who worship her and see her as a beautiful woman and to prove their love for her, or her protection. They kidnap people and do that same sacrificial ritual to her and by consuming mind altering shrooms, LSD shrooms and see visions of her.. Which could give unique classes like a barbarian who gets all bulked out after eating a shroom and goes into a rage.. but after they di, shrooms burst from their chest and they split in two. Their arms and legs acting as legs with a giant shroom with tendrals attacks the party You can have a mushroom styled creature like that rock monster in the under dark! The one with tendrals that posses like a stilagmite? Stalagtite? Or mushroom coated animals with sprouting mushrooms coming out of their eyes.. and attacks the party on sight. But after coming into contact with these infected monsters.. if inhaled the spores that come off the infected, they must make a.. say 12 dc endurance check or risk getting infected She has potential.. but I struggle in seeing her as any real concern or relevant to any casual group/ most groups whom play DnD. And in all fairness, why would anyone really want to include her into most settings when you have already so many other better, cooler and interesting things, monsters. Demons, devils. etc
