When it comes to character relations, the most fascinating relationship a story can introduce is perhaps the rivaled siblings.Whether it be the dynamic relationship of Inuyasha and Seshomaru, Dante and Virgil, or Sasuke and Itachi. Fans of any type of fiction are cognizant of the well established trope of familial feuding.
With that being said, it comes to no surprise that my favorite relationship in Avatar is the one between Zuko and Azula. And the reason for this affinity is due to the depth in which this relationship is explored and its complexity. In short, Zuko and Azula’s childhood experiences can be described as tragic and abusive. They were both pressured with colossal expectations of perfectionism by their father Ozai, grandfather Azulon and as a result of them being children of v the royal family of the Fire Nation.
Furthermore, with the discord of Ursa and Ozai marriage and the discord between their respective families, Zuko and Azula were interjected in an unhealthy environment that was counterproductive for a nourishing upbringing. But before we delve any further into this family feud, I think it is noteworthy to examine the ones who originated it, Zuko and Azula’s great-grandfathers Sozin and Roku.
Sozin and Roku were the best of friends, however as they would get older, their friendship would be put to the test as they embarked on their own paths. When Sozin became the Firelord, he advocated for the acquisition of power and the further expansion of the Fire Nation. Roku, who later became the Avatar, advocated for the maintenance of balance and peace throughout the four nations.
As you can imagine with both individuals having conflicting ethics, a rift would be placed in between them resulting in animosity on both sides. And unfortunately, after years of quarrel Sozin would betray Roku leading to Roku’s death. Therefore, with no one powerful enough to contest his conduct, Sozin led the Fire Nation into a great expansion, leaving the four nations in disarray.
But this feud doesn't just end with these friends turned enemies. This dynamic of peace versus power continues on in their bloodlines as their descendants Ozai and Ursa are forced into an arranged marriage by Firelord Azulon. Azulon hears a prophecy that if his bloodline were to merge with the bloodline of Roku’s then together a powerful Firelord would be born. Hence, this marriage of two families is not based on the foundation of love but instead is set on the foundations of manipulation and power.
Now caught in the crossfires of this blood feud are the children Azula and Zuko who did not ask for this decadence but nonetheless are compelled into it to the detriment of their psyche. Through the hostile madhouse created by Ozai and Ursa (but mostly Ozai) a contentious setting is set for their children. One side of the family values power and instilling fear and on the other side love and empathy is encouraged. And this duality in standards causes Zuko and Azula to find it difficult to develop an identity as both sides of their household are in a constant battle of ideology.
And that's what makes the dynamic of Zuko and Azula so interesting, it's that they both come from the same environment but because of their discrepancies in how they were raised, they develop in contrasting ways. And this discrepancy between Zuko and Azula is what will be discussed in today’s video.

Facts! When parents have favourites, it will automatically create jealousy or hatred towards whoever got more love then you. Each sides favoured whoever was living by their values. I blame both parents but at the same time, when it comes to Azula’s mother, how can you unconditionally love a child that is a spitting image of a man you fear/hate and was forced to marry.

I agree. The family situation was simply horrible.

The comics make Ursa much worse. Spoiler. She claims Ozai isn't the father of Zuko. This makes Ozai go from being embarrassed of Zuko to hatred of Zuko.

Ozai manipulated Azula and turned her into the person she became and broken her into a monster that Ursa fears and making her become a manipulative snuffer I think what she did is made Azula’s trauma towards Ursa’s love for zuko caused Her jealousness and hatred ness to automatically go cyber and damaged her personality in my speculation I think she was wrong to favour zuko more then her and Ozai was particularly wrong aswell because he didn’t show his love and affections to zuko aswell but the damage that Ozai had done is making azula became a pond tool to him no one blames her for being like this though but they’re both wrong they treated their Chile wrong in a messed up way by showing one of them favouritism kind of like Abel and cain for example.

Hi! Such as great video on Zuko and Azula! I have no complaints about your dialogue and explanation. But, I noticed an error at 1:06, since you mentioned about Sozin and Roku. The picture at the left is Ozai, not Sozin. Overall, awesome video! Keep it going!

I agree with you but at the same time I feel like Azula has always been kind of psycho or had mental problems. A few great examples are they first she would always take her jealousy towards Zuko to the extreme when was younger. 2nd on the beach episode she would not only crashes the party but would only talk about war, violence and domination wich would scare the guys away when they would try to flirt with her. And third not only in the series but in the comics, zuko and the Avatar team forgave her and tried a few times to give her a chance to redeemed herself but she would always choose to get on the evil side and be a villain. Wich could be a sign of insanity. 🤔

Azula does have problems. And speaking of comics. Comics only extend the story 3 years after the events of hundred year war, with 67 years to go before Korras time. During this time perhaps Zuko Ursa can get through to her. The possibilities of Azula changing are there. So far her story has been up in the air with no hints as to what her fate is by Korras time. There is however a one shot novel comes out next summer as well as future projects from avatar studios which I am sure will shed some light. The new Azula focused novel Azula in the Spirit Temple what we know is that Azula must confront her past and even teased redemption. I think potential for Azula changing is there. I read some great fanfics where Azulas redemption and changing for the better handled well. I know Zuko wants Azula to be better and wants to have better relationship with her. So who knows.

Also Azula will not change overnight. It will take some time.

@@AndalusianPhilosopher i think it will happen. The writers said themselves that they wanted to redeem her. And if they tease the possibility now and not go through with it it would be really strange and inconsistent. Azula does have changes in her goals and personality in her own weird way. One line in Smoke And Shadow that really stood out to me is something Azula tells Zuko when she reveals her new ambition and "destiny". "Once i discovered my own destiny that voice in my head finally shut up. I've felt weightless ever since, FREE! Maybe for the first time in all my life". That means that Azula knows that being Ozai's perfect daughter, doing everything she can to be the best Fire Lord she can be never made her truly happy. She's apparently never felt free. Now that she's cut Ozai out of her life she can finally look inward and ask herself who she is and what SHE wants. In Iroh's words. This development happens and the next comic teases her redemption? Seems like a very straight line of character development.
