Zuko Finds Out Why His Father Always Hated Him… #avatarthelastairbender #avatar #atla As Zuko and Azula call a truce to go and look for their mom with Team Avatar, we cut back to the past and see a memory of Azula explaining a day with her tutor to her father where she made a fool of her instructor which causes Lord Ozai to send him to the colonies. When Zuko makes a comment on how what Azula did was wrong, Ozai snaps at him telling Zuko that when he was born they weren’t even sure that he was a firebender, and at the time the fire lord almost had him cast out of the fire nation because of how much of an embarrassment it would be to the King to have a Firstborn son that can’t even bend. For a second he praises Azula for learning 14 more fire bending forms than he has, and tells the boy that if it wasn’t for his mother and the fire sages BEGGING Ozai to give Zuko a chance, he wouldn’t even be here, since Ursa was born lucky, but Zuko was just lucky to be alive. This causes Zuko’s mom to actually get really angry with Ozai telling him that was an awful thing to say, but it’s at this moment where an aide comes in and tells Ozai that his archer has finally returned, as he goes to meet with this hitman expecting to hear a success story, and instead sees a man on his knees apologizing for never finding his target, but explaining how the place he traveled to was completely unlivable because every animal, plant and insect in the area seems like it’s out to get you. Ozai isn’t very happy with this as he forces the man to go back home and resign, but now it’s time to see him break the news to his wife that her lover, is dead.

Actually pretty sure Ozai thinks Zuko is possibly not his and that’s why he hates him. Which was probably further supported when Zuko began to show kindness while Azula seemed like the type to torture pets when bored.

@@darksidehavokHe knows Zuko is his son, but Ursa wrote that he wasn't in a letter to catch Ozai reading her letters, and when she did that Ozai basically told her despite knowing Zuko really was his, he would treat him like he wasn't. Basically he was mad she caught him reading her letters and he decided to be abusive anyway. It also has to do with the fact that Azulan favored his eldest son (Iroh) so is believed that has some to do with why Ozai hates his first born son and favors his second child, being a second child himself. Also because Zuko wasn't a prodigy or strong, and Ozai hates weakness. That's why he hates Zuko.

Honestly, Ozai never really loved anyone except himself. Even Azula, because he really thought of her as an extension of himself, which is why he made her the fire lord while he elevated himself to a new position. It was jusy another way of expanding his control and influence. So yeah, Zuko would never have received his father's love, no matter what, because Ozai is incapable of giving that emotion to others.

Ozai is actually pretty strong in his own regard. The creators said he's the strongest firebender in ATLA. He's pretty proficient in lighting bending, where we saw Iroh and Azula conjuring lighting, it took them a few seconds to do the hand motions and then cast. Ozai did it instantly with only a sliver of sun when he attacked Zuko during the eclipse.

Bro wdym Ozai is weak? Iroh himself admitted that he didn’t know if he could beat him. He can cast lightning twice as fast as Azula and he had Aang completely on the defensive before he went into the Avatar State. If he was weak he wouldn’t be the main villain and Aang wouldn’t have had to train so hard in all four bending styles just to have a chance at defeating him.

It’s strange because Ozai apparently hated Zuko upon birth for no apparent reason. Theoretically he should have embraced his first born son until he realized he was kind hearted if that were the issue… but that’s not what happened. I suspect Ozai had believed Zuko is not his son but had no way to prove it and therefore had to accept him. Kind of like Game of thrones with Tywin and Tyrion… apologies for the reference but it definitely tracks here.

I agree I think he always suspected Zuko wasn’t his even though he is. It’s a mild paranoia. He never fully trusted it because traitorous evil people like Ozai never trust others because they themselves can’t be trusted. He literally wanted to get rid of him ASAP and was looking for the slightest reason. Azula on the other hand was born at a time when Ozai watched Ursas every movement. Even better she was born exceptionally gifted so Ozai identified her with himself even more.

I never understood Ozai's hate for Zuko 'to get back at his wife' explanation. It makes more sense for the writers to go down that route if he was actually in love/obsessed with Ursa & decides to get back at her for not reciprocating his feelings by lashing out on Zuko. Problem is rn he knows Zuko's his own blood & he doesn't love his wife. So it makes more sense for him to groom Zuko, his first born son into the perfect fire lord in his eyes & brainwash him into turning against his mother

It’s because Ursa still loves Zuko. Making Zuko’s childhood awful while she has no real power to stop him and just has to watch is a pretty good way to emotionally abuse her. Plus she’ll have the extra guilt of knowing Zuko’s hardships are a result of her own actions against Ozai. Also, it’s supposed to show off how extra evil Ozai is because his willingness to hurt his wife is greater than his love for his own child.

Ozai is just evil, he dosen't love ursa and know ursa will never love him, but despite that ozai believe that having a baby with ursa will gave him a super powerfull firebender son (cause ursa is an avatar descendant) so ozai thought that zuko was the key to have the throne (cause he will have the stronger bloodline) but instead a super powerfull firebender he only obtain zuko, a weak child that bearly can do firebender and was a complete desilusion, so ozai plan was ruined up and only could take the throne by killing his father and took the throne cause iroh didn't want it

This made me realize something. Burning Zuko's face really was done out of hatred and spite and wasn't just a punishment and hard lesson for Zuko to become a stronger prince. Ozai truly wanted Zuko dead ever since Zuko was still a child. And all this time, Ozai was just waiting for an opportunity to hurt his own son. When Zuko spoke out during an military meeting, Ozai was probably happy Zuko did that. Cause now he had a legal reason to fight him in battle and a reason to cast him out without needing to reveal that he really just wanted to do it.

You have to take in consideration that she was forced to marry him and give birth to his children. Her soul must be so damaged by all these years that I don't blame her. It was all Ozais fault. After everything happened she even let her memories be forgotten because it was so horrible. She was mentally broken. But I also have to agree she was also a shitty mother.

tbh, if I'm forced to give birth twice to my abuser and live a life filled with toxicity and BS I would have joined the mental hospital a long time ago, let alone have the spare sanity to properly assess motherhood. Part of the reason why I think Ursa treats Zuko and Azula differently is because Azula is basically her nightmare/fear manifested (give birth to a strong bender to be used as a weapon that resembles the abuser so much), whereas Zuko is like, her only hope in that hell (a seemingly normal and kind kid, also suffer from the same abuser)

Always hated the resolution the Zuko's mother arc comes to. Much of the backstory seems like braindead lazy writing that is often inconsistent, and frankly it makes Ursa seem like an absolute shit mom by the end of it, abandoning her kids. Like you watch the scenes of Zuko and Azula reflecting on her in the show and then you read this shit and it doesn't even seem like the same person.

Ursa is as normal as anyone in her position can be. She got used as a broodmare because of her lineage (not smth she can control), got her dream life taken away, got abused by a psychopath, gave birth to his children twice, one of them turned out to be just like him, her son is the only spark of joy and hope in that hell but he's about to be killed, ofc she ain't gonna put up with that. Ursa feared Azula, because Azula is precisely the physical manifestation of what she feared most in that place: a child resulting from that concerning marriage, becoming just like her abuser and be used as a weapon. Azula is precisely why Ursa is in that place to begin with. As much as she could love her own daughter, I don't suppose she can love the child created not out of love, but abuse and profit. Also she looks like her but acts like him is the cherry on top lmfao. If Zuko met Ozai's expectation, she'll dessert him just like Azula.

Well, bending isn't a learned thing. Katara could without a teacher and as far as we know, Katara's mom knew at a younger age than Korra. In fact, the fire nation knew the amount as well. It can be accidental when learning to crawl.

It IS a learned thing because while Katara was shown to be capable of Waterbending unintentionally when she was upset, she still needed to do certain motions to actually manipulate water, and if memory serves me correctly, her mother didn't find out that Katara was a Waterbender until she got older. With Firebending you could make the argument that it might be more evident if the child started belching fire while getting burped, but Iroh having to explain Firebending's breathing techniques to Zuko demonstrates that simple muscle movement isn't enough; he flat-out says that Firebending 'comes from the breath, not the muscles' as he walks Zuko through the process.

Maybe firebending chuldren show signs of bending potential like body heat, warm breath, or other heat related things. It also seems like something the fire nation would want to be able to determine early given how a child could accidently set a house or other structure ablaze in a temper tantrum or other strong emotional state

In the lore Fire benders are assessed as babies by putting a piece of tinder under the nose/ in front of the infant's mouth and if that piece of tinder caught fire they were a fire bender

They thought dragons were extinct and you can learn to bend an element unless you’re born with the power to do it. All the dragons can teach a firebender are the movements of the bending and the mindset in order to help them master it.

Ozai didn’t act cold to Zuko because of his bending. It was because Ursa wanted to know if Ozai stole and read her letters. She wrote Zuko wasn’t his as a lie. Even when Ozai found out the he was he told her he will treat him as if he wasn’t.

The letter is a red-herring, and what Ozai said to Ursa was just typical abuser BS to mess with her. Ozai hates Zuko because he is a lacking (Sozin-style) firebender and because of his "soft" nature. It's telling when Zuko "kills" Aang that Ozai reinstates him as crown prince and treats him well, not starting a war council meeting until he is there and seeking his advice. To someone like Ozai, children only have value if they can advance his imperial ambitions. The moment they can't is the moment he casts them away, as seen with his burning and banishment of Zuko, his attempts to kill Zuko, and him "rewarding" Azula with the Fire Lord mantle after several failures while he becomes Phoenix King.

Potential continuity error here..... but when Zuko was born, wasn't Iroh still the crown prince and thus Ozai not expected to take the throne? In that sense, it wouldn't be the Fire Lord's firstborn heir who wasn't a bender had Zuko not been able to firebend. I suppose, it could simply be reframed as Ozai seeing it as humiliating for any member of the royal family (at least in terms of his children) wasn't a firebender.

I'm sure he put bruises on her but I mean she is literally a woman non bender under the thumb of the the strongest bender in (the world?) their nation. She's probably like a little pet that he fancies only because of her lineage. But yes, I'm sure Ozai put the fear of God in Ursa with the threat of burns or bruises. I don't think he would need to slap her but I definitely think he has sadly. Just probably not often to create an awareness of such on their children. Ursa has the saddest story 😢 All she wanted was to be with Ikem and be in theatre 😢

The reason Ozai acted that way towards Zuko is because Ursula said that she wished Zuko hadn't been Ozai's son so Ozai said he'd treat treat Zuko as if he wasn't from that day onward. Ozai only said this to Zuko to be cruel.

Ozai hated Zuko for so many reasons. He wasn’t easily controlled, he was too much like Ursa, he was a late bloomer bender, and Ursa sent a letter to her ex boyfriend that she was forced to leave that said that he was Zuko’s father. It was entirely false as they never even got intimate, but more so a fantasy as Zuko was so different from his dad. Ozai found the letter and so he told Ursa that her wish is her command and from then on, he treated Zuko as if he was basically a bastard child who wasn’t even his.

I recalled reading in the comic that he found his wife letters to a secret lover, it made him think that Zuko not his son. Basically the letter was what broke the family and made him started treating his son differently rather then him hating him because of his bending. The bending was the final nail that made him question his son paternity.

Idk why people in the comments find it so nonsensical. You can tell if a literally minutes old baby is deaf, blind, paralyzed, etc.. I’m sure there’s a test to see if they bend, especially when the show shows us that benders can bend their element by accident (such as when flailing or sneezing). And for a parent to abandon a disabled infant wouldn’t be an original concept, either. Just cruel.

Ozai was truly an immoral, unethical, and unhinged psychopath with a hint of sociopathic tendencies as well. He deserved to die more times than could be counted, but death was too easy for him, especially given how the sins of his family must be answered. So, taking away his bending and living out the rest of his days as a weak and pathetic fool was a fitting end to his family's dark and bloody reign and legacy. To Ozai, compassion, mercy, honor, integrity, and respect were signs of weakness that had no place in the Fire Nation. But in the end, he reaped what he sewed bc like Zuko said, "Banishing me was the best thing you did for me. It put me on the right path."
