I had a weird idea a few months back that instead of making that sequel to Korra, there could've been alternate versions (outright stated as not canon stuff) of the original Avatar, where *maybe*, Iroh is Firelord, Sokka is a late blooming water bender, or Zuko didn't betray the gaang, etc. And based on all the theory videos out there that make very cool stories out of small changes like that, that would be cool.

Zuko and Katara barely liked eachother, always kept fighting at stuff and only saw eachother as friends at the very end funny how people think they have chemistry🤣😂 . Aang was always there for Katara and Katara was always there for Aang they were obviously meant to be from the beggining.

Aang is the calm to her storm.Aang told Katara to let her anger out but to forgive the man at the end cuz if she killed him her dad, Sokka or any one else and even heself other than Zuko won't be happy. Aang never idealised her. He even left the Avatar state just for her. Katara was confused but she was not always confused. She only told him she was confused at the end and showed feelings for him too. She would get jelouse whenever Aang was around other girls and even at the end she was the first one to lean in for the kiss. They both had feelings for eachother and Katara just wasn't too sure about them untill the end. They are perfect. They both had feelings for eachother unlike some ship made completely out of delusion.

Ok, so when aang told katara to not kill that man, he was also in a way, implying that he should not face that man. And don't pull the, "Oh, he told her that before she left." Yeah, but like this was to the extent of taking appa to leave. Zuko at least understood the pain and loss katara endured. He understood the havoc the fire nation has caused on her. He once when through the same thing when he lost his mother to the fire nation, from his own dad! Zuko faced the man who banished or in a way, took his mother from him, and katara faced the man who took her mother away from her. Don't u see the parallels and how interwoven their character journies are? This is why I think zuko was able to understand katara so well, because he went through the same thing. Aang did not. He was frozen in the iceberg for a 100 years, and before then, his entire culture was destroyed. Aang does not understand the extent of katara's true emotions, and does not know how to respond when demonstrated that there is more to katara than this idealized image. I can name every single instance from the show, where aang idealizes her, or when he fails to grasp katara as a person. Also, aang was consistently mothered by not just katara, but practically the entire group. One day before the invasion, he has to disrupt the team's plans and they are the ones who have to sacrifice their time and energy into helping him. Katara mainly does this, however, and she does this to the extent of being a mother to this boy. I swear, like saying that aang and katara are borderline equals in terms of maturity is clearly not demonstrated here. Explain to me, just 1, one instance from the show, where aang actually understands the full extent of katara's emotions, the full extent of how the fire nation has wreaked havoc on her culture, and where for once he was never idealizing katara. All u r saying is that he did not idealize katara and you are not giving examples that support this idea of urs. Ok, so you have this 12 year old adolescent boy. He meets the girl who then becomes his crush. Then as the show progresses, he then is told eventually by katara herself that she feels confused in being in a romantic relationship, and then he kisses her, in which she responds quite negatively, "I just said I was confused!" Then katara looks down and says, "I am going inside." She looked quite uncomfortable after being kissed by him. Not saying she should be with zuko. But Why aang? What has he done for katara other than to bolster his own infatuations on her, or to be mothered by her? What did he do that was significant for katara as a person? Nothing! Other than fight the fire nation, defeat the fire lord, and save the world his way by clinging onto his idealistic beliefs, we never see anything from aang that affects katara as a person. When aang suggests to face this man, he approaches it in the sense that, "Oh, nothing is stopping my girl from facing this man. Oh well, ill just tell her to face it, as I probably made the wrong impression on her." That was the type of approach he was going for. He was certainly not doing it in the sense to help katara. Ok, u r probably thinking that I hate aang. I do not hate aang! I actually enjoy him as a character. It is just that he is immature, not for his age, but rather when compared to the other members of team avatar, he acts that way. Aang is a great and fine protagonist. I have no problems with him. All of the things I said about him were criticisms of how his character could have been improved. Does not mean I hate aang. If katara had to be with a romantic partner by the end of the show, I cannot say zuko or aang. I am going for haru. He understands the pain and loss katara endured, and he is not some random bad boy like Jet or like zuko. He understands the pain katara suffers and katara understands haru's pain. And there were quite a few instances from the show where katara showed affections for him. Also, I forgot to mention that half the kataang moments in the show do not even make romantic sense. When they are stuck in the cave in episode 2x02, the cave of two lovers, aang says he would rather kiss her than die. And katara takes it in the sense that this kid is a weird kid. And also, blushing is the most natural reaction to any situation involving intimacy, platonic or not! Blushing does not mean u automatically like the other person back. That is not how romance works. If katara perhaps dropped hints of maybe liking him, like idk, maybe trying to confess her feelings of him to him, and then getting interrupted. I would buy this relationship. But no, we only see aang's perspective of how their relationship should be. Between katara and haru, we are given both sides of how both of them feel, and that is made to be a well written relationship than the one we were given. I really think aang would have benefitted if he let go of his attachments, if he lets go of katara. That way, he could actually grow as a character. His character arc would be around letting go of his earthly attachments. He would access the avatar state in time, and maybe Ba Sing Se would not have fallen.

No, ship wars are inevitable in popular fandoms. It also points out the writing flaws of the creators and the preference of the viewers in romance in fiction, which sometimes reflects their worldview of romance in life, which makes it quite personal when challenged.

Exactly my thoughts. Except the part about Kataang, I do think aang would have benefitted and grown as a character if he let go of katara tho. He would marry an air acolyte and would conceive tenzin much sooner since they were both airbenders. Katara should be with Gary, I think. They get each other and the show made it clear of kataras feelings to him. And zuko should be with jin. Jinko forever. For zutara to work, they need more time, and they were given little time.

It's their chemistry, it's something A LOT of fans find appealing. Their complexity as characters who pushed each other to develop follows textbook romance, without the fluff. It may not be true relationship goals in real life, but it is popular in fiction, and how the writing direction in Book 3 made it seem like they will become Endgame. If you go to Tumblr, hundreds of essays, even thesis-analysis from professional writers, will argue that this ship is far better than the canon pairing, and they are not necessarily wrong in the sense that Kataang had its own gaps in its writing to become a universally loved couple. Frankly, ATLA is bad at writing romance arcs, so that is why we have this kind of mess in the fandom.
