I live in Colorado. I made gumbo for my kids with red beans, rice, and corn bread and wore my beads and now I get to watch a parade! Thank you so much!

Respectfully, me not being from New Orleans, is the face paint style and Afro wig a Zulu tradition for many years? Some awesome floats! Great dancers and bands, too.

@@amyhayutin1738to piggyback off of his statement, the Blackface has several meanings. First it was to “mock” the “mock” of whites to Blacks. Secondly when the African ancestors went to war, they would paint their faces to fight as well. My logic is that the whites got wind of this, and began to make fun of Blacks in minstrel shows. Third, when the organization was founded, they could not afford to purchase masks, which is a requirement to parade in Orleans Parish. So if they wanted to parade, they had to do what they had to do. Today it’s a tradition and most of all it pays homage to their brave founders.

So, Mardi Gras goes back to almost the founding of New Orleans. The krewes, with a K they they run the Mardi Gras parades. MG is great a festive season for everyon whether you were French, Spanish,wItalian, or Irish, I was Scottish or a slave, or Haitian, or African, everyone celebrates Mardi Gras. However, there is discriminat😮😮ion in Mardi Gras and the clubs that put on the elaborate parades are private clubs and still are private clubs . I remember being a young black child in New Orleans, and the favoritism shown to the white children was hurtful. Blacks were never able to join those white clubs, so, black citizens of New Orleans created the Zulu club. And essentially dressed up as what white people thought Africans were in mockery. The Zulu club was created and never had a parade schedule as it was illegal for blacks to be other than thrown to. So that is the tradition, and that is why we dress in mockery still, and that is why I will parade is the first Mardi Gras day because we were not supposed to parade. And because all clubs are integrated now, the whites and blacks wear the Zulu make up.
