ZUTARA | Zuko x Katara - BATTLESHIPS 

Thank you! Honestly, the more I watch ATLA, the more I realize these two have so many parralels. There's even symbolism attached to this pairing (the Cave of Two Lovers, where two benders wearing red and blue meet in a cave of glowing crystals (like Zuko and Katara do in the Ba Sing Se Catacombs) and become lovers separated by war; he dies in the war and she uses a great feat of bending to end the war. It mirrors the final Agni Kai against beautifully.) I could talk about Zuko and Katara for hours, I swear :)

I believe there was supposed to be a season 4 (Book 4: Air) where Zuko and Katara were supposed to grow closer and Aang was supposed to go scouring the world, looking for Air Nomads who had survived, after letting go of his selfish attachment of Katara like Guru Pathik says at the end of Book 2. I think Aaron Ehasz, head writer on the show, said this specifically. But the fourth season was dropped because of that awful live action movie. I can't find the original source, though, unfortunately. In any case, if it was the plan all along or not, they dropped the ball big time :(

I haven't watched LOK (heard too much bad stuff about it tbh, Lily Orchard's video "The Legend of Korra is Garbage and here's why" on the subject is excellent), especially because of what they did to Katara (and the rest of the Gaang too). LOK was... like that... because Aaron Ehasz, Elizabeth Welch Ehasz and other writers didn't return to work on it. LOK was made by Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino, the creators of ATLA itself. If it hadn't been for Aaron Ehasz and the other writers, from what I've heard, Azula would've been Zuko's brother, Toph would have been a guy (like in the Ember Island Players' play) who was in a love triangle between Aang and Katara (to showcase Aang as the """nice guy"""), Katara's entire character arc would've been centered on Aang (such as her epic fight against Pakku)... everything bad I've heard from the comics and LOK would've been in ATLA. It's sad, really. So yeah after watching The Dragon Prince, made by Aaron Ehasz, on Netflix? The good writing came from the head writer and writers, not from Bryke (Bryan and Mike).

Thank you! I highly recommend watching ATLA. Though it DOES break my heart every time how much potential they had that was wasted. They would have been so good for each other. Sigh :(

Hey, thanks for the comment! If I can go on a little rant here... While Reylo is a disservice to Rey as a character, comparing Zutara to Reylo is a disservice to Zuko as a character and Katara as a character. Kylo Ren has nothing on Zuko. He's a 30 year old manchild who has a split second, last minute, never talks again until he dies """redemption""" after destroying planets, killing millions, torturing Rey and Poe, and putting Finn in a coma (and that's only in The Force Awakens!). In TLJ, Rey was reduced to a shell of herself to redeem Kylo Ren. Zuko never killed anyone. He only wanted to capture the Avatar during Season 1. Zuko is a 16 year old abused boy who, after witnessing what his people did and were doing, managed to undo years of propaganda and change sides to restore balance to the world and end the war. Who does that sound like? Yes. If there's anyone Zuko is like in Star Wars, it's Finn. Finn sees Rey as his equal, they fight amazingly well together, they listen to each other and Rey opens up to him about the dark side inside her (in TROS, that's apparent when Rey talks to Finn about her darkness). Zuko sees Katara as his equal, they fight amazingly well together, they listen to each other and Katara opens up to him about the dark side inside her (Zuko never judges Katara when she wants to confront Yon Rha, or when he sees her use bloodbending). What does "entitled manchild who never takes no for an answer" sounds like though? Yes. Aang. Okay, he's twelve in ATLA. Sure. Fine. But he kisses Katara twice without her consent (one at the invasion, where he thinks that because HE kissed HER, which he rephrases as WE KISSED when it wasn't the case, they HAVE TO be together, and another during Ember Island Players EVEN AFTER SHE SAID SHE WAS CONFUSED). He gets frustrated when she doesn't give him a clear answer and nods when people call her "the Avatar's girl", like she belongs to him. He's twelve, sure. But if he can't understand boundaries, he's not old enough yet to be in a relationship. And in The Legend of Korra, we learn that Katara becomes a sad, lonely old woman who lives alone at the South Pole, without a statue or anything to commemorate her actions during the war, and becomes "the Avatar's wife" and "mother to the Avatar's children". In TLOK, Katara is reduced to a shell of herself to be Aang's wife. Hey, btw. Why would Zutara being canon mean Zuko can't go on a life-changing journey with Toph? He did with Sokka and Aang. thevictorianghost I dont know what zutara shippers are on about. They only had a few moments with each other and in none of the moments they showed attraction, just empathy because they have simular situations. Aang and Katara saw each other grow up, just because they are seperated by 1.5 - 2 years doesnt mean they cant love each other? Aang gave up the avatar state for Katara at first But because they where in trouble he had to use it. And did you see how broken katara looked when he fell when hit by the lightning? She showed interest at him in season one already and so did he. Just because she said “he’s just a friend” did not hide that she definitely had a thing for him. Also saying “the creators wanted zuko and katara together” doesnt mean anything anymore, Zuko and katara didnt have romantical chemistry at all, just empathy for each other- know the difference for Gods sake lmao. Also people saying kataang was rushed, uhm they already showed interest in season one what are yall on about- like if they would do katara and Zuko together THAT would be rushed. Also personally I feel like katara and Zuko would break up anyways. And lastly the moment where Zuko jumped infront of katara, he wouldve done it for any of the Gaang members, he didnt do it because he had a thing for her, he did it because he seriously wanted to protect and help them. @@takingabigfatshit4292 Hi! About your points. Do we ever actually hear Katara say she had a thing for him? That she saw Aang as more than a brother? As soon as she mentioned the idea of kissing him in the Cave of Two Lovers (to get out of a cave alive, mind you) she immediately says how ridiculous the idea was. Every time something between Katara and Aang is said on the show, it's always from Aang's point of view, never from Katara's. He's told he should be attracting a lot of ladies because he's the Avatar. He's told she'll come around because he's the Avatar. But do these people ever ask Katara what she wants? Even their kisses were initiated by Aang, and did Katara look happy when he did? The Fortuneteller episode is built around Aang's crush on Katara, an older girl, which we never see become something deeper, is parallel to Meng's crush on Aang, an older boy. The episode shows that sometimes it's okay to love someone when they don't love you back. It hurts, but if you still care for them, you'll want to make them stay in your life. It's only Sokka's line about Aang being a pretty powerful bender (something we already know, because Aang is the AVATAR) that gives Katara something to mull over, but their relationship never really grows past that on screen. And even then, Aunt Wu didn't say "THE most powerful bender". She said "A VERY powerful bender". That can mean a lot of people. Like Haru for example. Or Zuko. Sure, you could say that Zuko and Katara don't have romantic chemistry. Though a good chunk of the last few episodes show us that a lot of people THINK they're together, like the Ember Island Players and June herself (calling way back to Season 1). The story of the Cave of Two Lovers mirrors Zuko and Katara's relationship, not Aang and Katara's. The Air Nomads and Water Tribes were never at war, as far as we know. They balance each other, they can talk about their feelings together (does Katara ever get the same emotional support from Aang that she gets from Zuko, such as in The Southern Raiders?) She always gives and gives and gives with Aang. Zuko gives back to her, too. He helps with chores (like when he serves tea), for example. Aang never helps without being asked first because he's a kid and Katara acts as his mother a lot. On the Katara acts as his mother thing. She even acts as his mother more than once, lampshaded in The Blind Bandit (where she tells Aang to "LOOK AT ME WHEN I'M TALKING TO YOU YOUNG MAN!") and even in the Headband, where she masquerades as his mother and it's noted that she seems reaaaally good at it. Even in the Catacombs of Ba Sing Se, she holds him in a Pieta, the Western representation of the Virgin Mary holding a dead Jesus after he's dropped from the cross (I know Avatar uses Eastern imagery and philosophy, but the creators were Americans and writing for an American audience). Katara and Aang's relationship seems very motherly to me, at best a brother and sister relationship. And yeah, Zuko would've jumped in front of lightning for anyone in the GAng. But he asked KATARA specifically to come with him. He didn't ask Toph or Sokka or Suki to come with him. He asked Katara herself. She was the worthiest, in the GAang in his eyes, to come and fight against Azula. He wouldn't have had to jump in front of anyone else because he didn't ask anyone else to come with him to get back the throne. And then Aang literally gave the world up for Katara (when he abandoned the Avatar State) when he clearly needed it to save everyone. Aang didn't have to give up Katara entirely. He had to give up his crush on her because it was a selfish attachment. Because Katara is his emotional crutch. Because whenever he talks about loving Katara, he never stops to consider whether she likes him or not. He doesn't consider her feelings. And we can't possibly know IF Zuko and Katara would've ended up breaking up later on. Because we never got to see them as an actual couple. But the fact that they can talk through their conflicts (like in Crossroads of Destiny) and they understand each other's moral and emotional needs, I think it would be healthier than "Aang asks Katara to follow him around the world so much she barely ever goes back to her Tribe, makes her sit in the back while he teaches his Air Acolytes and flirts with other girls, and eventually leaves her and two of their children in the South Pole while he takes his airbender heir on special trips around the world" like we saw in the comics and LOK. thevictorianghost i understand now! This makes lots of sence! Thanks for telling me about katara’s perspective. I personally like the zutara ship to be honest. I just feel like since Zuko and katara both are very stubborn and need somebody with positive energy or sometimes wisdom to even it out. I feel like they would turn out toxic, like Zuko and mai, but thats just what I think! The thing about some of the kisses with kataang aren’t enterely true. 2 times in the series she makes an excuse to kiss aang. “Give this kiss to zuko when you see him okay?” Is what she said as a sarcastic joke and then kissed him on the cheek. Also in the cave she insists on kissing, which you can see makes her flustered and she also blushes. I feel like she did have feelings for him but not in a relationship way, with that I mean that she didn’t want a relationship because they were young. But further on her feelings grew? All those things about her feelings are just things I can assume ofcourse because she doesn’t really confirm it? But it makes a lot of sense to me tho :) But thank you for sharing your opinion and I respect it!

thevictorianghost I feel like both ships have good and bad reasons about them! That’s why sometimes I like zutara because it has very good reasons on zuko’s and katara’s development. It’s that they haven’t had any romantical chemistry that makes me not want to ship it over kataang. I like kataang because it’s a very cute ship, it also has its negatives because of how young and naive Aang is in relationships and love, which doesn’t really bother me when shipping because it makes sense to me because he’s 12 in book one and 13 in book 2 and 3. But that’s just me! I like both ships but I personally ship kataang. And I don’t really like arueing anymore (which I did like a week ago) but now I feel like it’s useless since both ships have valid arguments on why they would be great together. The only thing that makes me want to argue when people hate on kataang saying he was toxic and when they say kataang had no chemistry at all. But anyways, Have a great day!
