Dr. Kai Yung gives us an introduction to the capabilities and the many unconventional uses of the new ZWO Seestar S50. He provides an overview of his experimentation and novel ideas into the field of spectroscopy, and how he extended its capabilities to operate it in the equatorial mode. Along the way, he has picked up many tips and tricks he will share as well.
Kai Yung studied Physics and Computer Science, with bachelor at Williams College and graduate studies at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He has been involved in the high tech fields in the San Francisco Bay Area all of his career, from Biotech Instrumentation for the Human Genomics project, Software Architecture and Engineering for Social Networking before Mark Zuckerberg started his studies at Harvard, and Computer Vision, Robotics and Machine Learning at a local startup.
He retired just before the start of COVID, and has been tinkering with technology his whole life. He started the hobby of astrophotography before his retirement, and was one of the deciding factors for his early exit.
He was introduced to ZWO's Seestar at the first day of its introduction, and placed the order in the first 10 minutes. After receiving the unit, he was enchanted with its portability, cost, and potential, and found himself using and experimenting with it more than any of his other numerous AP rigs.

I plan to use my S50 to replace my 8" dob. Running at a 10-second interval for 2 - 5 minutes per messier object is like having a 10" telescope at a fraction of the weight, bulk, and cost. This mode is called EAA Electronic Assisted Astronomy. Make a Messier challenge for yourselves and try. 20 Messier objects in three hours. I live in Bortle 6-5 area. I use drawings from other astronomers to prove my point. No more waiting for your eyes to become dark adapted. Sweet!

This is probably the most exciting and enthusiastic TAIC speaker I have ever seen! Hacking S50 for the good! :)

Thank you TAIC for hosting me, and I apologize for my poor time management and not able to continue with my second part of the talk. I will release a video that focuses on doing spectroscopy in my group in the coming days, and will have more to share when we meet again at TAIC at the end of April. Thank you for your kind comments.

Your talk was very informative! You mentioned that you made a video about a workaround for the Horizontal Alignment “Bug”…..how might I be able to view that?

You can’t beat the convenience of setup of the Seestar S50. It gets used much more than my larger telescopes due to the quick and easy setup. I used to break my neck and back hauling out my heavy equipment so the light weight is great.

2 weeks ago I got the Witch Head nebula at just 3 hrs. The Seestar can’t get close to my 6”APO, but it’s become my ultra travel scope. It’s so compact for the hardware. This is far more than just an impulse buy instrument. Bear in mind the faint DSOs I’m getting are from pretty dark skies. I’d imagine that if I lived near the city, I’d be limited to brighter objects.

Great to see what is possible with the Seestar only wish the info was not in facebook not a user there

The sensor aspect ratio was probably chosen to match the aspect ratio of a phone held vertically. Another choice aimed at mass (simplistic) appeal. Count me in for pleading for mosaic planning feature to the software! Thank you Kai and AIC! I am a new subscriber thanks to this video.

you defiantly see a difference at 5%. Its like say investing $100 at 5% interest $5 is all you get, say you invest $1000 at 5% is $50 interest, so the more invested the greater you get from 5%. Same as imaging, the more time that 5% adds up to much more

Why did you cut the speaker at the most interesting part? - Oh, we've run out of time. - You have better things to do?

Cause we kinda sensed he was gonna rush through a bunch of important stuff. We felt we would rather reschedule an extended session rather than rush through the interesting things he had to say and not do them justice. He is coming back April 28 with lots more to tell you all.

Hi everyone looking at getting this wonderful Seestar S50 however looking on RU-vid the planets like Jupiter and Saturn are very small. Would it be possible to add an additional lens to magnify the image entering the telescope and thus have greater detail. A bit like an SLR camera and placing a 200mm zoom lens. Also thinking it wouldn't be as big as the smaller the sensor the smaller the lens , a bit like the Micro four thirds system in Panasonic and Olympus. Kind regards William Oliver

Something I wish they would fix: My home WiFi password has an = symbol in it. The SeeStar does not allow an equals symbol in the password! So I can't connect to it, and go online via Station Mode! I reported this bothersome bug. Should be easily fixed in a patch! I'm not changing my password, resetting every mobile device in the house, and telling every guest and family member to do the same. That small complaint is all I have right now with the SeeStar! Otherwise, I love it, and have been enjoying it!😊

Here's a solution. Get a cheap WiFi extender. Seestar has such a bad wifi range anyway so it's a good idea to have an extender near by. In your case, you can also set up the password to anything you like, and will connect to you main Wi-Fi router.

I can't understand why not just give an advanced mode with an EQ mode, unless ZWO is coming out with a Seestar 60 Pro or something. I'm sure they have considered it, a quadruplet with a 585 sensor, sure it might cost as much as an AM5 but I'd still think they would sell like hotcakes! What they really need is auto polar alignment as long as you are within say 5-10 degrees of north

I hope they do come out with a better one. Maybe a little bigger, better lenses, and outputs 8k photos, and better planetary mode to get crisp clear images of planets and closer objects. This ends up with fuzzy stars, not very crisp. It's definitely great for what it is and the cost, but I wouldn't mind paying $2k for a much better one, as you said "s60 Pro".
