ZX Spectrum 1-bit multichannel music by Tim Follin. No disturbing AY chip drums. Recorded from the real hardware.
Yerzmyey says about 1-bit music:
Many people think that attaching AY chip into ZX Spectrum was a regress. AY has only 3 channels of sound and pretty simple square wave based synthesis, whereas music generated by Spectrum's native sound-source, the Z80 chip (with help of ULA chip) was expandable to even 8-10, even 12 channels (software mixing) and it was able to generate really interesting envelopes.
This music has been written by Tim Follin. I strongly doubt it would sound good on 3 channels only and simple square-wave synthesis.
What is interesting, he has never made such great songs for any other music-chip or other platforms.
And I say:
TIM FOLLIN IS A GENIUS!

Not only is this a brilliant accomplishment for likely the most primitive sound device in video game history, but intended as such or not, this is a very high quality Harsh Noise composition.

One bit, getting flipped on and off at rates that are simply too insane to imagine. That's all this is - and it ROCKS.

this is just another reason why tim follin is so incredible. thinking about this from a technical standpoint blows my mind.

This is an incredibly awesome composition! It’s only held back by the awful sound quality due to the limitations of the tech. Anyone know if this song was ever remade in better quality anywhere?

!!! This is the sid music port of the commodore 64 chip from Tim Follin. How can I port any sid music myself ? Where can I get such an engine ?

I guess we need to thank Tim Follin for the tune and someone else for such a great beeper music engine he has used.

damn i found it after all this time i could not remember what this was called, i knew it was a game on the spectrum from around 84 to 88 that i played but getting on now and learnt to many things that i forgot what this was called, the game was good man and the sound wow, i remember that day when i loaded it up and said WTF damn this is the second tune that i had ever herd that pushed the spectrum, the first was manic miner intro

Would this be possible on an IBM PC speaker? Inquiring minds!
@aki_128
@aki_128 2 года назад
I don't think so, because the PC speaker works in a different way. The Z80 CPU of the Spectrum controls the speaker directly and is clock-dependent on it. The PC speaker isn't controlled by the CPU directly. If someone made a similar musical routine for the PC, it would play only on that one PC model, as all PCs used different CPU frequency and peripheral timings.

I remember that the game Putt Putt Joins The Parade for DOS can play voice lines and sound effects (that sound like actual sound effects) over a PC speaker. Not sure how that was done. It can play music but those sound like typical 1-bit renditions, and it can't play music and sound effects at the same time. The Windows port dropped support for PC speaker

I don't remember which game it was, but back in the day it could play actual MOD music (which uses samples) through the pc speaker of my 286 computer, so anything is possible. The physical speaker was also not just a beeper but even had some depth to it, newer computers only came with this tinny tiny thing that was very unsuitable for music reproduction

Tim Follin, I do appreciate your work and you are the original of this tune, but I simply prefer deadmau5's edit your friends version.
