I watched this concert on German television at the age of 22. It was 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning. I drank a good beer and smoked a fine cigar. After that, I fell asleep and burned a big hole in my parents' armchair. I woke up when the smoldering fire reached my thigh. A good memory for me - not for my parents :-))
One of the best live concerts ever broadcast on television. They played from 4 o'clock in the morning. Everyone was totally thrilled. That was the start of their success in Europe.
I owe my initial exposure to "that little ol' band from Texas" to my brother, Stan. He brought home two classics: Tres Hombres and Fandango! I was 11 at the time and it blew my young mind! Years later, I got the opportunity to repay my brother by taking him to see ZZ Top in concert (Afterburner tour) in 1986. Turns out it was the only concert we'd ever see together as we lost Stan in 1999. ZZ Top will always be near and dear to my heart! Thanks for always keepin' one foot in the blues!
I was 13 when Eliminator came out which is to say I experienced puberty through the Legs video. Since then and now just appreciate them for being a really great blues rock band.
I would have been 6 then. I do remember the Legs video. I was obsessed with drums even at that age and watched MTV all day everyday. Learned to play drums by watching MTV in fact.
-----ZZ Top were very young back then---I don"t think they were thinking so much about money----What do you mean with "Pearly Gates",appreciated,Fernando Garajalde ?----
5:42 "RIGHT ON!" 🎸🤘😄Dusty was so fkn awesome, the way he simply dropped the bass at you, so it hit ya in the face, and made you feel the boogie. R.I.P, brother.
ZZ Top is so good it's beyond belief. I gigged drums 4 years. Only Frank Beard challenged me. Dusty Hill was a vocal classic. And then there is Bill Gibbons. Eddie Van Halen said Gibbons was the reason he picked up a guitar....nuff said.
Saw them in 1983 on the Eliminator Tour with my dad. I was young and naive to think it was their first album lol. My dad quickly set me straight. I love that old ZZ Top music!!
This is the version of ZZ Top I first saw live. This recording is only an approximation to the wall of sound they could throw out. They had stages of perfection and this is one of them.
I JUST saw ZZ Top in concert on Saturday. FIRST day WITHOUT Dusty. Billy said they sent him home the day B4 to get some rest. Their guitar tech Elwood Francis( of 20 years ) filled in with Billy's blessing saying 'The show must go I'm ❤😪
If you only know them for Legs then you finally recognize this little piece of bluesy rock magic for what it is...there had to be some grand muse or great collaborative force or vibration in the zeitgeist that allowed for this type of music during that time because it surely came to an end at some point. Waiting for someone more literate than me to quantify it more succinctly.
ZZ like all the bands of the time, wrote songs they could play just as well live as it was on the album.....didn't need 6 backup singers, 5 other musicians, and pre recorded effects to sound great.
59 comments when I got here for that 59 pearly gates Les Paul. I was born in 59 and I got mesmerized by guitar and great rock and roll and started playing at age 13 or so and have been jamming ever since. Billy and ZZ are one of the reasons. Born in the year of 1959, the year of that great guitar, something great was in my destiny. God bless America!
Met a drummer who met Billy Gibbons while standing in line at a Buc ee's in Texas. It was about 11 am, the Reverend was wearing pajama pants and asked the guy what he thought the best beef jerky was. Said they talked for almost an hour, Billy could be someone's neighbor and they'd never know. ZZ Top was playing that night in, yes, La Grange and Billy said something like "Come on down", and the guy said he'd have to ask his wife (turns out she wasn't havin' none of that!!!). The guy showed me the selfie with him and Billy. I don't know how people don't love Texas.
Pearly Gates… the 4th member of ZZ Top. Saw them once in 2003. But I fear I will never see or hear the guitar live. Ridiculous as it sounds I would pay stupid money to see them even without Dusty, if I knew I’d hear those magical tones form Pearly…
